I won't lie, this episode was the worst thing I've seen out of the season so far. Due to the fast pacing, this anime is already not proficient at dealing with tone and tone changes, but hell, everything was rushed and ineffective in this one.

In one moment we have a playful mood as Ushio appeared again and is stealing the spotlight, the next we're watching a reveal of some hidden drama in a flashback, then we're looking at a random ecchi scene popped out of nowhere, then MC is nearly getting killed and then he's crying on his knees. I don't know what this is if not bipolar.

Not to mention the blatant plot devices such as Mio "being in the bath" in a matter of a literal minute and not being able to hear all of the commotion that happened in Shinpei's room, or how Nagumo-sensei gets to Shinpei's room unnoticed, and even checked on the real Mio in the bathroom (how?) on her way through. I don't know where Alan was in the midst of everything, but boy, that house has the quietest floor to walk on, the most silent doors, and the best thickest walls. It's almost an anechoic room at this point.

I get that the off-model reaction faces were intentional, but they didn't fit well in my opinion. It seems like this story is trying to add a little too much humor for a plot that, all in all, should be pretty dark. Humor is not the only way to make your characters compelling.

The animation and art at some points was also as exaggerated as the unstable tone, and I'm afraid some precious hours were wasted on detailed facials that were at best off-putting during those scenes.

Shinpei's heart was going through a lot this episode, those facial expressions lmao. Great episode! Though I definitely think there was something off in terms of the pacing and the flow of the scenes, still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Man, Ushio's just so damn adorable. That fucking cliffhanger was brutal.

This episode was weird. What the hell was with all the over-the-top reaction faces all of a sudden? They don't fit the tone at all and randomly starting to do something like that in the middle of a show (rather than doing it as a consistent stylistic choice from the start) is just jarring in so many ways. Are they supposed to be funny? If they are, why is this show trying to add random comedy like that all of a sudden? There are far better ways to provide levity in a serious show like this without completely breaking the established tone and style.

A few other small things bothered me too. For example, why did Shinpei react to Ushio's appearance by actively announcing that "she shouldn't appear until the 24th"? Why would he reveal knowledge that he could only have from looping so carelessly? Surely the show could have come up with a better method to reveal that Shadow Ushio can also loop, one that doesn't rely on Shinpei acting unnaturally dumb for a moment?

Also, how did Nagumo get into the house without anyone hearing, and how did that battle with Shadow Mio go entirely unnoticed by both Mio and Alan? How did Nagomu confirm that the real Mio was in the shower without her noticing?

Worst episode of this show so far, but hopefully not a sign of things to come as it's been such a strong start otherwise so far.

Yikes.. the downgrade in animation is so abhorrent and takes away all the fun..

As a manga reader, the manga had more movement..

Seriously.. what the hell happened.. We got 7 great 5/5 episodes in a row and it went into drain on today's episode..

Alot of important panels, dialogues cut.. Even humour felt awkward and stiff for one of the most important chapters..

Lets all hope, they don't screw up the next few episodes cuz Goddamn are those important..

Good episode even if it was a little different than the others with some over the top reactions, but from some of the comments it looks like it's adopted from the manga. Crazy how Ushio time traveled with Shinpei, wonder if anyone else did. I also wonder if the shadows know that Shinpei can time travel since he was copied during the last loop? Or was it from the killing of the other shadows from the present loop? Lastly, the cliffhanger with the video has me curious what was recorded. So many questions, looking forward to the next episode!

Ushio changing the time of her loop clearly indicates the Shadows changing their tactics to get to Shinpei. That's really scary for him. It's like his knowledge of what's to happen next isn't really helping anymore. And it doesn't help that he continues to change things on his own to adjust for having Ushio around earlier now.

FINALLY, I got an answer to how Nagumo knows about Shinpei and came to the island to save him. It was Ushio all along!

She 100% knew beforehand that she was going to die. She even set up that camera on the beach the day she died. I wonder what the camera will show us.

8 episodes in we finally have our second fanservice.

Now that Shadow Mio attacks Shinpei inside the house, and the fact that Sou knows Shadow Ushio's presence, it's safe to say the rest won't go the same way as it did in the previous loops. I think the animation quality drops a bit but it's nothing ruining my experience. Still a candidate for the best anime this season!

This detailed Mio scene is really fucking creepy.

Edit: so in the manga they show more of Ushio's nude, her nippies are drawn too.

Manga is more open to nudity in general. Even Shiraori's Shadow mom is drawn nude at some point during their encounter with Hizuru

A bit too fast paced for my liking. Too much happened at the beginning of the episode. I'm glad that Ushio's shadow was recognised as an ally though.

I wonder what Shinpei meant when he told Hizuru to look out for a replacement shadow at the Festival. Didn't they just say an episode ago that once your shadow is killed, you're immune? Or was he talking about the possibility that another shadow take over for Mio's shadow at the Festival?

I’m late but I’m here now, and this was definitely a more comedic episode but we still had some nice twists and turns. Shinpei’s reactions to Ushio throughout the whole episode were hilarious and Ushio is definitely cute and funny herself, she really lightens the mood.

And it’s a shame that Hizuru doesn’t want to work with Shinpei as long as shadow Ushio is by his side, but hopefully she’ll change her mind or somehow still end up helping each other.

It annoys me that they censored the nudity. The show is already violent enough yet boobs is where they draw the line. I just wanted to see Ushio's titties.

Mio's shadow died in this timeline which is when he said that though. Mio is immune in this timeline, meaning that her shadow can't come back.

Shinpei asked Hizuru to look out for a replacement at the Festival. I was asking if he meant that another shadow could come and fulfill the role Mio's shadow would've carried out during the festival instead, or if he just forgot that the immunity was a thing.

Shadow Ushio needs to super-kick and give sweet chin music to Disney for creating this delay in the first place.

as far as the episode goes, those are some good faces. the students of prison school would be proud...
And grand blue...
Its contender for show of the season. Story, art, character development, dialogue, pacing, & animation are all outstanding.
they cut out some important info that was meant to gets revealed so I'm assuming they'll reveal it later for the sake of the mystery but no that's good.

People have been commenting on how they didn't like some of the character's expressions in this episode due to budget issues/the director's decision/they make the characters look weird...Whatever the case might be, I love them. They remind me of the faces characters from Grand Blue do all the time. I guess I find more amusing the actual comparison of the two rather than Shinpei's exaggerated expressions.

The faces this episode were quite exaggerated. I wonder what made them switch to this style all of a sudden. Either way, the episode was really good as Shinpei had to decide whether to trust the shadow ushio or not at the cost of the authors trust. Shinpei hasn't really thought about the vision of Ushio he saw while looping. I think she might be behind it somehow?? I hope that message video clears things up.

The faces were so out of place. I don't care if they are in the manga, the tone changed so radically it felt like a different anime.

The animation and the direction were quite bad compared to the first episode as well. Please go back towards the mystery plot. Less of those bad attempts at humour, which weren't even funny

I don't know about the criticism about this episode, I felt like it fit correctly with the overall entertainment over logic that the anime tries to induce. Ushio's behavior is puzzling and she being a time looper is quite strange, but I suppose that it will be cleared later. I hope tht Nagomu decision about Ushio is going to be the correct one, I feel like the most interesting path is where one Ushio have to disappear in order to fix the whole thing, as it means a sacrifice by Shinpei. Didn't really care about the design deviation either, not like it destroys the vibe

So after watching this episode, I'm sure we're all intrigued by Ushio's shadow. One of the strangest things is her appearance this early on, but I think if we trust the information provided in this episode, it can make sense.

Highlights of the episode and what I think about them:
1) Ushio's shadow has no memory of sending a message to Nagumo. This can mean one thing, Ushio was copied before she sent that message per the logic of memories getting passed to the shadows. This is actually great because in episode 3 or 4, maybe even before, Mio mentions that Ushio saw a shadow of her own self. That's good foreshadowing.
2) Ushio is leaping with Shinpei. Well, I still don't know how they'll explain this one. This would explain why she appears a lot sooner than expected. Why? If she saw what happened on the 24th (night when everyone gets absorbed), she would try to do something about it and find Shinpei.
3) Shinpei shares what he knows with Sou. This honestly isn't the smartest decision he's made so far, and he probably knows it and is just counting on leaping again if worse comes to worst, but it's understandable. Nagumo doesn't trust him anymore, and he really can't move on his own.

I hope the video reveals something.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

Shinpei unable to kill shadow Ushio. No surprises there. She too cute.

Seems as though the timeline is changing. Shinpei's knowledge of the future might not be so useful anymore.

The split personality dynamic of Hizuru and Ryonuusuke is really cool. Anime needs more characters with split personalities.

Happy that shadow Ushio lived. Rip her arm though.

Can't blame Hizuru and Nezu for not wanting to work with Shinpei for siding with a shadow. Could betray Shinpei at any moment.

The tonal whiplash in this anime is something to say the least.

Oooo secret video. I wonder what's gonna happen.

Been a while since an anime has had me this engaged. I respect this anime for trying to be different and telling an intriguing story.

What the heck is happening now? @_@

Dammit Shin, if you're not going to stab Ushio at least try to step on her shadow to confirm which she is.

Alright, the battle with Shadow Mio truly confirmed Ushio is a Shadow. Though I guess Episode 5 really did that too, I was just still holding onto some doubts.

I don't have too much overthinking to do on this episode... It seemed pretty straight forward. The most important thing to me is that we've finally unlocked the phone. Hopefully that'll shed some light onto what is going on with Shadow Ushio.
