Urobuchi revealed on his twitter that he wrote the script for this movie back in 2014 before Thunderbolt Fantasy.
https://twitter.com/butch_gen/status/1386278371189936129

I wonder what took them so long to make this movie when the script was already completed?

That's a bit of a relief to hear. I'm really, really hoping this will feel like a proper resolution instead of just a random, cobbled-together series of complicated contrivances where no one knows what's going on anymore, Evangelion-style. There is a ton of potential here. Crossing my fingers that they won't screw it up.

Lol since 2014? So it definatly was planned to Release the next Movie shortly after Rebellion. We might never know what the reason for such a delay was. Its the same with Evangelion.

The fact that it took so long for the script to be animated leads me to believe the producers wanted to turn madoka into a cash cow and drag the franchise out with appetizers before giving us the main course finale.

Nonetheless, I'm excited that the epic conclusion is finally happening!

Doesnt make any sense to me. Magia Record was the only thing that came after Rebellion, after 7 years. And we know how shit that was (basicially every Gacha Game Adaptation is shit to be honest). And also, making a Sequel years after the predecessor and after the hype died down is never a good Idea. Look at Full Metal Panic, look at One Punch Man. But i definatly have faith that this Movie will turn out great.

There was also tons of manga spin offs and merch so it wasnt the only thing. Thwres no good reason why the sequel took so long but at least it's coming

On the one hand Kizumonogatari took like 6 years to make when it was suppoed to be released two years after it was announced, but they also just made Assault Lily that was based on a toy line so I guess it could be both. I wouldn't be surprised if it was also related to the concept movie that got made in 2015. Shaft def does seem to milk some of their franchises, but I don't think that's the worst thing ever if they're well done (I'm pretty sure KyoAni doesn't have a single franchise that doesn't have a related special, ova, movie or sequel, for example).

Honestly, I imagine the pressure was too intense for them to feel they could work "freely" as artists (writers, visual artists, musicians, directors, etc.). With a series so blown up, and EVERYONE wanting different things from a sequel.. can you blame them? When you look at the smaller projects in the franchise, you can see they wanted more wiggle room and freedom to create. Several smaller spin-off stories, some not even involving the main cast in any regard, shows they still had a passion for the universe itself.

I've seen mixed stuff on how people accepted Magia Record, but a great deal of it boils down to if they've played the actual game or not. I continue to play MR even after the NA server closed, and I LOVE seeing it in a show adaptation. While I think the prices in the game itself are often stupid, the creativity side of things is so refreshing, and it got me back into the PMMM universe again in general. Most people I've seen that dislike it don't play the game: and most people I see that like it have/do play the game. It's an adaptation, and in a format which has significantly less time for dialogue and such -- adaptation pacing is always wonky, and usually is made for the original fans.

MR itself feels like it's been petering out already, so maybe they felt they wanted to finally jump back onto the big cake after getting that taste of anime creating again. MR anime didn't seem as well accepted, and if they've decided to move forward anyways with re-kindling the long-anticipated main series.. that kind of encourages me? It feels LESS like a marketing thing, or a cash grab. They're proceeding despite initial signs of possible disliking for their work, which, makes it feel like they're not continuing for the money -- but rather for their own joy of creating. That's something I like to see.

That makes me quite happy, because I've become attached to the ideas and visuals from the Concept Movie as a base for the sequel.

Now we know it wasn't a random mix of potential maybes, since the movie was at that point basically (if not completely) written. So yeah, hyped.

Do we know this is the end or is there room for more?

(On a somewhat unrelated note, I don't really understand why MagiReco gets so much hate. It feels like it's because people compare it to the main story, but it IS supposed to be different.)

Kanon and Koe no Katachi are the exceptions you're looking for (at least not made by KyoAni).

100% agree with this honestly. From the get-go, MR had its own unique direction, themes, tone, and story. It's something I greatly appreciate about it: not requiring to leech off a the main series to stand on its own. The story being its own deal is why I was keen on getting into MR in the first place.

On the other note, I liked magiReco, It shouldn't be compared to the main series. I hope there's a second season in the work. The execution is a bit weird in places but still enjoyable.

ClairS is still around, Kalafina is the big question mark, though. I suppose there's a chance of a reunion; See-Saw reunited after a disbandment then disbanded again. My guess though if they don't reunite or none of the old singers come back under the FictionJunction moniker then it might be LiSA.

Keiko is still perfoming under FictionJunction + I'm pretty sure they will also use old songs performed by Kalafina.
Even if we don't get to hear more of Kalafina singers beside Keiko, Yuki Kajiura knows how to pick voices for her songs really well, so I'm sure whatever it is, Yuki gives us, it'll be very good.

That makes it sound like the delay was just Shaft being Shaft... I can see that tbh.

I'm not going to hold on them holding their work back after disbandment, but some of the members still have working relations with Kajiura through FictionJunction. Kajiura finding vocalists who can match her composition is the least of my worries.

I've generally noticed that as well, which makes it all the more awkward being someone who liked MagiReco (though not nearly as much as PMMM) but doesn't care at all about gatcha. I will say that I can understand other people going in blind thinking it was going to be more like PMMM after watching the first two episodes of the anime. I didn't mind the tone going multiple directions because it was purposeful enough for my tastes, but it was bound to upset people going in with pre-conceived notions (which was the case for most of the content-starved PMMM anime-onlys).

Thing about MagiReco story is that you need to know entirety of it to see that it's actually very good in its own way. The current 1 season of MagiReco anime covered only the part of the story where absolutely no answers are given even ingame. So I find it natural that people say the plot is bad. It's not the same as PMMM, but it was never supposed to. The story starts shining as you get more and more answers to the questions 1st season gives you, and those are given VERY late. The game has it much easier, keeping people's attention since it's not limited as much as the anime. Then we have people who played the game and complain that they rushed or changed a lot of stuff. The story is much longer than PMMM so they simply had to skip or change some parts, otherwise they'd have to make like 4 seasons in order to cover the story in detail like the game does. As someone who played the game and finished the entire Arc that the anime is about, I don't mind the changes at all. There were some parts I'd rather see the game's version of but it wasn't anything that'd ruin the show in my opinion.

Rebellion was never the end -- it had an ending that is set for direct follow-up in the story. Movie 4 was said to of always been coming, but they stopped production up until now with them announcing they're re-starting production. Movie 4 was always going to happen.
