This is something I see a lot when it comes to MAL forums. I often times wonder how it originated. To me personally, I find it cringey whenever I here someone say this. If you didn't like anime, why did you join sites like MAL? I know that there maybe some people who do it as joke. But even then, I kind of wonder if it is even actually a joke sometimes. I also understand that some people may not consider anime a great media compared to others. But if you didn't like anime all that much, then you wouldn't be taking the time in discovering new shows and tracking your progress. I know that there is a stigma in the anime community that is filled with weirdoes. But I never based my existence as a fan of the medium off my interactions and contrasting interests with the community. It's just based off my years of watching it and enjoying it. The only reason I joined sites like MAL was so I could track the progress of the anime I watched. I wasn't really aware of the social aspects of it like friend requests and discussion forums until I explored the site more. What are your thoughts on this meme?

Like most memes, it's stupid and reactionary. It's just a way for people to not have to justify their opinions.

"They escaped the weight of darkness,
to forge a path into the marrow of the spirit.
They chose to drown in a deeper vacancy,
an emptiness that quells the null,
a pool for the forgotten..."

I think the people who say that like anime but they probably find it funny to insult themselves. But I'm not sure I've never said it myself.

Yeah me too, every time I searched any anime title on the net and it leads me to MAL, it pops up this page saying join mal, join mal now, or else.. so I decided to join one day and didn't participate in forums or discussion until late 2019.

I heard Gigguk, a YouTuber, say it once, thought it was funny and have been saying it ever since.
I don't think anime is trash at all but it's still funny to say.

I think it originated from some anime youtuber or something idk. But yeah, its incredibly unfunny and I mostly only see it spammed by poor souls on r/anime trying desperately to get as many orange arrows as they can to justify their existence... or something.

I find it to be an annoying and dumb meme tbh. I don't know exactly where it came from but I remember the first time I heard it was from a Gigguk video.

Gigguk popularize this meme

and there is some truth to it imo i mean hentai anime got lots of social taboo stuff like incest and pedophilia and rape same with normal anime sometimes like Mushoku Tensei and Redo of Healer that are controversial in the west

i know for sure that i consider most anime ive seen as Guilty Pleasure

I mean, it's not the most insightful commentary or anything, but I think it's pretty harmless. Just a mixture of self-deprecating humor and the perspective that they feel as though the content they watch isn't necessarily analytically excellent, but they enjoy it regardless.

I use it when someone is trying to start a debate and... quite honestly I can't be assed at the given time.

Also I don't use it seriously, if you do then.. why?

I don't think you should take it literally. It's just a natural consequence of non-anime fans and anime fans shaming others for liking specific shows, types of shows, etc. It's self-deprecating humour while simultaneously insulting everyone else.

I don't really mind it when people say it in a joking manner even if it's silly. Insecure people that talk shit about the whole community and the medium just to put themselves on a pedestal, on the other hand... I have no words.

Absolutely cringe and unfunny like any kind self deprecating humor. It just reeks of insecurity. So yeah... 100% agree with this one, expect:

It’s just self-deprecating humor, it’s really quite common in the anime community. I personally find it pretty funny, but I could see why someone wouldn’t.
How am I supposed to decide what to write, I can't choose an anime to watch to save my life, you think I can pick a signature?

Personally I like the "Most anime are trash but I am not a fan of them and only like high art" meme better

It was said about a little sister loli incest anime. (Eromanga Sensei)

This meme was kinda annoying.... but calling yourself trash because you like something people generally look down on is something I relate to. Cause I’m a Fujoshi so....

How about enjoying anime because it's trash?

I haven't really seen it used through YouTube or the Facebook anime groups I'm a part of. MAL was the first place it was introduced to me. I do know of Gigguk, but I don't really follow his content. So I didn't know it's been going on for a while.

The first time I heard about the meme was from a gigguk video and in the context of that video it had nothing to do about not liking anime or being ashamed of it, all the contrary people saying it were just admitting that they enjoy the type of anime that others might frown upon like kiss X sis or oreimo and that they were nothing wrong with that. Ofc I get how cringy it might sound after all these years now.
