Stage Play 'Mars Red' Adapted for TV Anime in 2021

A television anime adaptation of Bunou Fujisawa's Mars Red musical stage play was announced by Yomiuri TV Enterprise on Thursday, scheduled to air in 2021. The television anime is being co-produced by North American anime distributor Funimation.

Synopsis
Mars Red takes place in 1923, and vampires have existed for quite a while. But now, the number of vampires is increasing and a mysterious, artificial blood source called Ascra has appeared.

The Japanese government, in turn, creates "Code Zero," an unit within the army tasked with taking down the vampiric forces. And what better way to track vampires than by using vampires?

Created by Lieutenant General Nakajima, this unit has historically been in the business of information war, but has been re-assigned to solve the vampire crisis. (Source: Funimation, edited)

Characters Description (Code Zero)
Yoshinobu Maeda – Captain of Code Zero and the "most powerful human."
Shuutarou Kurusu – A-class vampire and rookie on the squad.
Tokuichi Yamagami – Smart vampire, not currently ranked.
Suwa – A veteran vampire since the Edo era.
Takeuchi – D-class vampire and mad scientist with an immortal brain.

Cellist and music producer Toshuyuki Muranaka is composing the music, while original creator Bunou Fujisawa is serving as the sound director.

The first Mars Red stage play opened in June 2013, followed by a second in September 2015. A manga adaptation by Karakara began in Comic Garden magazine on January 4.

The plot seems pretty generic, but I’ll still watch for nice looking dudes.

Speaking of Bunou Fujisawa, he had conversational interview w. Yuki Kaji in March issue of Nikkei Entertainment!'s serialization En. (Sorry it doesn't seem related, but just wanted to mention since I saw his name)

Nice, i like the art style, i'm only worried if it'll be gorey by the description, hopefully not and it's more like Bungou Stray Dogs where it just shows blood. Will add to ptw for now.

This "plot" has been exploited for at least a thousand times in Japanese "art" history. Terrible.
Imperial Japan + vampires? Have some shame people, if crap sells does not mean you must produce it.

Aren't you a bit too harsh on this one? I haven't seen you criticizing harem sh-it like Sakura Taisen reboot, which has even more ridiculous premise - mecha in Imperial Japan.

Can't say I totally disagree with you though. It'll probably be below average - but it's not like people watch shows like this for cultural experience. Personally - I'm in for eyecandy and yes, I have no shame.

The creator of the show is credited as the sound director. Dont see that everyday. Definitely checking this out

Unfortunately there's no detailed information about the original source out there. All I could gather is that it wasn't an actual play, but rather a stage reading with background music and visuals. As there's no available recording of the said readings - we can't say whether it was bad or good.
