Why is finishing a 12 episode anime harder than finishing a long anime?

Just like the title says. Since forever there have been two types of anime starters, those who prefer short anime & those who prefer long anime. I prefer long anime. Of course when you invest enough time into anime, you expand your radar and begin watching all sorts of anime, including short ones. In my case, I can't watch short anime, short or not I take weeks to finish one 12 episode anime, while when I begin watching something rather long I just binge watch it in a few days. I don't really understand why I can't bring myself to watch short anime. Of course, it's not because "You're picking bad anime" or whatever, this applies to literally every short anime, good or not. Tell me your thoughts.

That just sounds... strange. I have no idea how the knowledge of it's shortness would slow your watch time.

Without context, it's hard to tell why you have trouble bingeing short anime.

For me, whether I click next episode depends on how much I want to see what happens next, regardless of the anime's length. I watch one finished anime at a time. If you watch more than one, it can be hard to keep up with all of them.

Maybe you're just not motivated as much as you're with long animes, that can make quite a big difference. I remember an anime that took twice as much as it should have just because I didn't feel like watching it at all.

I guess it depends on the show really. Sometimes with slow starts, I too have trouble watching ~12eps shows, but that also applies to ~24eps and beyond as well

Yeah this makes no sense whatsoever to me. If the show doesn’t hold my attention I’m liable to drop it, or if i enjoy it but it doesn’t really grip me I’ll watch a couple episodes here and there while I’m laying in bed or something, but that’s just based on how muh it holds my interest, not at all on how long it is.

I typically have 3 levels of interest:

Hooked: I binge it from start to finish, I absolutely need to know what happens next. No other anime are even looked at until I finish.
Long example: naruto
Short example: kotetsujo no kabaneri

Enjoyable: I like it, but I’m not very interested to know what happens next so I watch it here and there. (Usually SoL for me)
Long example: GTO or Inuyasha
Short example: Hyouka

Not interested: self explanatory. I usually drop these or realize it probably isn’t my taste before starting.
Not going to give examples but there’s been long and short anime that fit this category for me.

I feel like your making the mistake of assuming shortanime can’t be interesting.

BABYMETAL is more metal than Metallica.
Naruto is objectively the best anime ever.
HxH 99' is decent. HxH 11' is bad.

Wait what the heck.... you not only have school days listed as a favorite anime but the PoS main character Makoto listed as a favorite????!

Mate the problem is your taste in anime.

Hating the characters isn't the same as the show being bad. Unlike the majority of romance anime, School Days is unfortunately realistic, and is the sole anime with a harem that makes actual sense.

Eh, I don't feel that. The only thing that determines how long I take to finish my anime is my disposition towards it.

Naw fam I agree it’s the most realistic harem I’ve seen, but it’s still dog shit. And how can Makoto be on your favorite characters I just.... I don’t understand you mate

Excuse me, but ultimately the anime succeed on it's goal, and if you can't take a realistic romance, then oh well that's not my problem.

longer animes have more episodes and shorter ones don't have as many. Maybe you are unconsciously deciding to pace yourself more so than you would with an anime that has enough episodes to accommodate your ability to binge

I don't know, it's probably just your taste. I'm the opposite, I tend to watch longer anime more slowly than shorter ones because they tend to have less going on in them so they lose my engagement. I also just enjoy moving onto the next anime a lot so I find it easier to watch anime that don't take too long to watch.

I don't know dude. I often find myself binging a 12 episode anime in a single sitting. To each their own.

For me it always depends on what kind of series I'm watching.

Longer anime with an interesting overarching plot or those which have at least often a smooth transition from episode to episode have a more consistent flow and I'm rather inclined to go for the next episode. Monster and Chuuka Ichiban are series I finished recently where this applied and I finished them in about a week. One cour series on the other hand often lack the attributes I've mentioned above and I might take longer despite me finding them really good.

I am a hardcore binger.
So, I am more interested in devouring down a short anime of 12 episodes rather then indulging in longer animes.

That kinda unusual, unless you're watching something not aligned with your preferences and expectations. But to be honest, in my case, it depends on the series that I'm watching. Since I value narratives, character interactions and humour. Fill any one of them, I will be certainly ok. Regardless how many cour it is.

Well I can easily watch both long and short anime. But after completing short anime, it leaves a bigger hole in my heart than longer ones. Just recently I finished both seasons of Gin no Saji, and I'm really sad cause it was such a great anime but there are no more seasons.

I don't get how you find easier to finish a long show instead of a 12 episodes one, you can finish some of them in one day if you get really hooked... weird logic imo.

Longer series = "FUCK GOTTA WATCH IT FAST OR I'LL NEVER BE FINISHED"

Shorter series = "Only 12 episodes? I don't need to rush..."

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

I guess maybe you find it hard to really get an overall feel for everything within a short amount of time. Everyone is different.

Doesn't matter how many episodes a anime has sometimes I will put something on hold for months and then eventually come back to it sometimes I am in the mood to start a new anime instead of watching one of the ones I am already watching.

For me finishing a long anime is much harder than a short one since... You know they have more episodes.
