Completed the main story a few days ago and I'm sitting at 90% total completion. It for sure surpassed the original red dead and here's hoping online can bring back some of the charm the original red dead multiplayer had. GTA Online was never really my cup of tea
In six months, there will be flying horses with Gatling guns. Rockstar can't help giving people bullshit abilities for Shark Cards.

The bounty system really ticks me off sometimes. I was doing one of the missions which of course involved shooting people and it was in the woods. After the mission ended and the characters parted ways, I decided to hang around for a few seconds to loot some of the bodies and almost instantly not one but two witnesses just decided to spawn right there and started investigating the scene. I had my mask on luckily and I manged to quell one but the other one somehow managed to get the law so fast even though I literally still see him on my screen and like 10 lawmen literally spawn right around me. I got a bounty almost instantly and running from them was a pain and I had to kill a few as well which raised my bounty further. It sucks that the only way to remove bounty is by paying. :|

I also feel like the hunting system might be more involved than it needs to. Sometimes I one shot the animals I try to hunt and I always end up with a poor pelt and I have no idea why. I finally looked it up and it seems like we have to hunt 'pristine' animals if we want the perfect pelts. Why? Why couldn't have just been based on the kill, why do we need to scout the animal and pray it's a pristine one? :|

I'm a little way through chapter 3, the story and the characters are great, story picked up really strongly since the John Marston missions. The missions themselves are fun, the banter between the characters and the writing is really nice. The stranger interactions and the detail put into all the side random missions in the world is absolutely fantastic. I genuinely feel like Rockstar nailed everything in this game except for the damn gameplay which ranges from being fun to downright annoying at times because of some of the systems.

@Lelouch0202 My main problem with the bounty system is how the negotiation feature never seems to work. I've tried using the 'Defuse' command multiple times with lawmen, but none of my attempts ever succeeded. They'll continue chasing me even for petty crimes like brushing aside a pedestrian with my horse. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

I also agree that the RNG in hunts can be annoying. Luckily I've been getting better skins and pelts after crafting the Buck Antler Trinket.

While I'm really loving this game, I'd still rank it below Monster Hunter: World and Valkyria Chronicles 4 in terms of enjoyment. I'm still around 60% through the story, but I've completed all optional missions and side activities before the final two chapters, so I can already form some sort of verdict.

I'm on chapter 5 towards the end of it (I think) and at this point I can say that RDR2 is one of my favorite games to have come out in a long time. I'm starting to see where the story is going based on where I'm at and what happens in the first RDR. This game builds on what RDR created and develops characters that were introduced in RDR 1 which I love.

I see a lot of people complaining about the movement and "clunkiness" but for me, it feels very much the same as RDR and GTA 5, so I don't know what the fuck people expected?

I don't really need to say this for people to know it's true, but the OST and the graphics are amazing.

I do have two minor complaints that are hardly complaints but for one I hate hunting in all video games. I hated it in AC3 and I hate it in this game. I just feel like its a waste of time and I really dont see the point of it. My second complaint is that I'm 99% sure that Liar's Dice is not in this game. I believe the only four mini games that are in are Texas Hold Em, Blackjack, Dominoes, and The knife game thingy. Really upsetting because liar's dice was so fun in RDR especially when it was in online play.

Otherwise, this game is perfection though and I'm hyped for the online portion of it.

I could reasonably aim in RDR (Free Aim) and don't remember the movement being quite this sluggish. Never played GTA V with a controller. The keyboard and mouse didn't get rid of the mediocre movement, but at least the run button could be accessed without leaving the camera. This is the video that convinced me maybe the gunplay was fun:

I wish I'd known it's complete ass without Soft Lock, which itself is ass. I really wish Rockstar made a shooter as efficient and functional as Max Payne 3 again.

Same here and it's not just lawmen, the 'defuse' command almost never seems to do anything for me. Rather antagonizing people more seems to work sometimes. xD

Unfortunately I still haven't played God of War or Spider-Man and I probably won't get to both of those until sometime next year. RDR 2 is a great game but GoTY so far for me is easily Monster Hunter World, it's the most fun I've had playing coop in a long long time. I haven't had this much fun playing cooperative multiplayer since the days of Time Splitters.

One of my coworkers, a younger guy, was talking about video game development with a non-gamer, how long it can take and stuff like that. Then he brought up RDR2, mentioned the graphics, realism and how your horse's balls shrink when you go up into the cold mountains. This lady just old enough to be a grandmother, not part of the conversation, found that stupid and said they should spend that effort and time on more important things. She said that she doesn't pay attention to a horse's testicles. I interjected, agreeing with her and saying they should have spent that time trying to make the game fun. The guy then claimed it's a lot of fun. Then I said, "No, it isn't. The controls suck, the aiming (Free Aim) is bad..." I wish I had elaborated a bit, but it wasn't my conversation. He then tried to explain to her how important immersion can be. This older lady, who probably doesn't even play games, understands games better than most young gamers. Or, she understands what's important. It's not horse testicles. This guy could have picked anything else to talk about. Makes you realize why most games are so boring now. Rockstar's priorities are screwed up.

I'm not commenting on RDR2 since I didn't play it, but out of curiosity, how far are you into BotW?

It became a slow grind for me towards the end, the combat system loses all its touch once you understand you can kill every enemy with a pot lid if get the timing right, even worse considering the fact there's like 5 or 6 different enemies to get used to (where are the Armos statues, or the tektites?).
The game rewards you for grinding and maxing your health and stuff by... Taking out half the final boss' HPs. WTF?

Horrible replayability, low efforts DLCs wich did nothing to fill up the world with more than 900 identical puzzles an a handful of enemies you'll know by heart long before you've seen half the game.

I switched back to ALLTP after finishing it, rushed through it, and it was incredibly satisfying despite me having played that game dozens times since I'm 4yo. Some boss even managed to make me pop a fairy, despite me being an horrible cheater who knows most tricks to make your life easier in that game (turning the damn invincible skull fairies enemy into regular fairies is ridiculous, exploiting ice wand+hammer for infinite mana isn't bad either :p)

I finished it on Tuesday. It was full things to discover and felt more gamey than most of the open world games. I liked the shrines, but would like more dungeons in the next one, more varied ones. It was also nice to play a 3D Zelda that for once wasn't so linear and let you discover the world on your own terms. I like all of the 3D Zeldas I've played, but still appreciated the change. Better than always doing the same thing, like SOMEONE.

I want to discuss so much about so many things in the game but I suppose that would be huge spoiler for the ones still playing.

The game is so big I still haven't found much easter eggs or anything too crazy.
Can't wait to give rdr online a go.

The strangest thing ever happened to me.

I was doing the Chapter 4 bounty quest in Saint Denis, the one where you go after the Lemoyne Raider's leader. So I go and capture him and return back to the police station, put him in the cell and take my reward. Literally the second after I pickup my reward I become wanted. I'm literally still inside the police station and I'm wanted and there are like herds of lawmen surrounding me. I have absolutely no idea why I became wanted at that moment, the game literally just said 'Disturbing the peace'. I have no idea what I did and how the hell it even came down to this. Needless to say I fled for my life, running and jumping across walls until I managed to get back on my horse. The chase was a lot of fun but I have no idea what led to me becoming wanted at all. xD

I've just got to Chapter 4 now but damn, the story is so good. You can look over all the gameplay inconveniences simply because the narrative is so very compelling. Ever since the Lenny drinking mission in chapter 2, the story has been fantastic.

Part of the appeal of the second game is how it relates to the first one character wise. How certain characters spiraled into madness makes a lot more sense now.

unpopular opinion but this game is honestly boring and slow! I think they made it too realistic to the point where it feels like a chore playing it.

Story is ok, graphics looks amazing and it is very detail, not so interesting in the characters.

Overall I'll give it 6.5/10.

The workers at gamespot that got to see a 20 minute gameplay of RDR 2 weren't lying when they say the game made them fall asleep. I'm huge rockstar fan, but I think they drop the ball here, and forget that people play video game to be entertain and have fun.

But hey, the comments here are all positive so maybe its just not my type of game.

Like with most games, you have to be into that specific genre / environment to get the most enjoyment out of it. This doesn't have the fast paced gameplay like a GTA game would.

Personally, I like the realism and lack of an emphasis on fast travel.

Gonna hold off with the online play for a while. Having other games I need to get to, and paying a monthly fee to play online is a bummer.

Hoping for some new DLC. Hopefully play as a younger landon ricketts. He was briefly mentioned by Arthur during the game, and he was present at Blackwater when the whole thing went down.

Either that or play as Sadie or Charles for some bounty hunting business.

Finally got 100% completion. You get a neat little scene as a reward. The exotics were a pain in the ass to farm, so thank god I started locating them early. Still need a few more trophies left in singleplayer before I can finally move on.

Recently started Red Dead Online with a friend. Quite fun so far, but people weren't kidding about the broken economy. Getting cash here is like a real-life struggle and everything is so damn expensive. I mean, most guns cost triple the amount they did in singleplayer! Yikes! The multiplayer game modes can be really difficult since you're allowed to bring your own weapons. Doing deathmatches with your starter Carbine Repeater against players with Bolt-Action Rifles is a futile effort...

The world is so beautiful and dynamic with lots of encounters and events along your journey on horse that can surprise you. In the epilogue now. Better than the first RDR.

Pros
-Good story, characters, I prefer Arthur Morgan over John
-Full of content, side stories
-As an open world game, it excel well in this genre
-Immersive

Cons
-Poor combat shooting

If you want a game with good shooting combat, this is not for you. Go play Mass Effect franchise or TLOU(if you want more tactical and not over the top action) instead. However, if you want to enjoy a slice of life open world game with some actions, this is suitable for you.

The Good:

Dutch, Arthur and the rest of the gang made the game for me. Arthur is probably has the best written characterisation I've seen in a game.

The world is beautiful. The weather system and the way NPCs would react to you is brilliant.

All of the side missions were great.

The honour system.

The amount of customisation was great: from beard and hair growing, to all the unique outfits and how eating can affect your characters weight. Sometimes games suffer due to having simulator aspects that can slow the game down but I never had an issue with that in RDR2.

A really good OST and superb voice acting.

The horse riding and shootouts feel great.

The amount of Easter eggs that you just happen to stumble by makes the game feel like really lived in.

The Bad

I tried out the multiplayer aspect and it was pretty boring.

Fishing. I havent most fishing minigames so this was no surprise.

I liked Guarma at the beggining, even though it felt out of place but the linearity ended up getting to me and I couldn't get into the war conflict story, though I like how it gets referenced in contrast with Tahiti and how it works in context to Arthur's arc but it just went on for too long.

The Ugly

I'm still playing through the prologue and I feel like I can feel John's restlessness, since we also have to go through the tedium of playing as a farm hand after leading the thrilling life of an outlaw.

The character creation.

Micah (I actually really liked how unlikable he was and made for a good contrast for Arthur.)

More of a nitpick but the controls can be a tad clunky at times.. my poor horse Breeze1.

I never found it fun to travel in carts or boats, whenever I got in one during a mission I just wanted to quick travel.

I didn't bother with the fetch quests bc i was too lazy but I wanted to see the gang members reactions (if they had any)

Rockstar needs to add more activities like robberies and poker into the online mode soon. As of right now, the best way to gain EXP and cash is to spam Showdown which gets insanely repetitive after a while. Not to mention the reward varies largely on your performance, so good luck getting anything if you keep getting owned.

If doing so would take some time, the least they could do is increase the payout of story missions. There is literally no reason to repeat them over playing Showdown right now. Or they could perhaps increase the frequency of free roam events since they're much funner.

Rockstar claims the online mode is still in beta, but the introduction of the gold shop really proves otherwise. Kinda sad that the funnest thing to do right now is to join random shootouts in Saint Denis.

I highly agree. I didn’t doubt that I’d like Arthur Morgan. I had high hopes when I saw the trailer, and he delivered. The story of RDR2 from Arthur Morgan’s perspective feeds a lot into RDR1 and adds more weight, meaning, and impact to every event you experience there. Also, you wouldn’t really care for john if you didn’t play RDR1 before. I mean part of what makes this story great is that arthur’s sacrifice and one of his goals on his way to redemption and being the good man he failed to be before is to secure a good life and future for John (the man we love after playing RDR1), a life he failed to achieve but hopes others he cares about can. What makes things even more sad is knowing that despite Arthur’s sacrifice, John’s past will still haunt him and he’ll experience a tragic ending in RDR1.

I'm somewhere in the middle of chapter 6. I'm playing real slow, I know.

I just did the Edith Downes mission line and for some reason they hit real hard. The finale of the mission line was for some reason very touching to me. The way Arthur reflects on being the cause for their husband's death saying that he does not expect forgiveness but instead pleads with Edith to not throw her life away for the sake of pride really got me, the voice acting there was phenomenal.
It's been a wild ride so far but this was the first time I actually thought, damn deep down Arthur is genuinely a really nice person. He really tries hard to care for the people he knows despite whatever's happened in the past.

I don't think I'm ready for the chapter finale now. :(

I just saw the guy looking for Gavin near Butcher's creek? What the hell? Did he literally walk all the way from Saint Denis looking for him? XD

Just got through chapter 6 and well damn. Tears were shed. :(

Arthur grew on me so much during chapter 6, a dying man trying to find redemption with what little life he has left. Watching him trying to salvage something as he watches his mentor who's taught him so much descend deeper and deeper into his own delusions was just so very endearing. He gets treated like dirt by Dutch and Micah throughout the chapter, forced to go on what are essentially death missions one after the other, he's even abandoned by Dutch at one point. Yet he endures it all, all because he hopes that somewhere, somehow he can save someone, anyone. It's so very endearing yet so very poignant, it's filled with heart yet is so heartbreaking to watch.

The way back to camp after saving Abigail, as the music plays and Arthur reflects on everyone who thanked him for giving them a second chance was so emotional. Couldn't help but tear up. T.T

Coming in to RDR2, I never expected Arthur Morgan to grow on me the way he did. Early on, I questioned if having John Marston not be the main protagonist would be a good idea. I wondered if Arthur would ever become someone I like. All I can say is, you got me Rockstar! He's by far the best Rockstar protagonist and easily one of the best characterized video game protagonists of recent times.

Rest in peace, Arthur Morgan! May you rest unshaken! You won.

EDIT:
Just beat the game, It was really cool to play as John again. I loved how he tried his best to become a rancher and that proposal on the boat was so sweet. It's ironic that RDR2 kinda ends on a happy note for John but when you take into account the events of the original game, it makes the story even more heartbreaking. :(
Great game overall, definitely better than the original RDR. The narrative was the real selling point for me, it's so gripping and endearing and it really carried me through the game despite all the gameplay issues I had mentioned previously. I would write more but I think I'll just go sleep after the satisfaction of experiencing the game.

Gold Rush revived the online mode. No doubt a PUBG rip-off, but I thought RDR2 did it better. Most importantly, it's the most balanced game mode since you don't have access to your own weapons *cough*Varmint Rifle*cough*.
