I always see these really lengthy reviews on anime shows detailing the good and bad elements of the particular show. These reviews use a lot of fancy terms like plot progression, pacing, character development, and the like.

So could you guys teach me what these terms mean, and how I could notice these things while I'm watching an anime? I don't notice these things until I read the reviews and rewatch the anime.

Thanks!

"Experience outranks everything."

Just watch more anime. After that, you'll be able to tell what makes this or that good or bad.

Basically this

Also for writing reviews.
[subject] x/10
[paragraph discussing it]

Do that for story, characters, sound, animation and enjoyment as well as doing an overall and you should be good.

Well, once you find out what they mean, it should be easy to find out how to use them.

Plot Progression:
The movement of the main events.
Sentence:"The story didn't have much plot progression."

Pacing:
How fast or slow a show goes.
Sentence:"I hate how slow the pacing is!"

Character Development:
The changing of a character
Sentence:"All the character developments of the show features a change in perspective."

I'm going to add some more common ones, that might be useful to you.

Cliche':
Something overused, and shows no original thought.
Sentence:"This character has a cliche' personality."

Trope:
A literary device that follows a given set of defined standard~Brb
Sentence:"One trope is a Trophy Room."

Plot Armour:
It's basically a buzz word that means because of the plot this character isn't going to die.

Protagonist:
The main, main character of the story(who you follow the perspective of).
Sentence: "He was a very interesting protagonist"

Antagonist:
A rival or foil against the main(not to be confused with the villain someone evil).
Sentence:"I found the antagonist really boring."

This is all I can think up, for now, I may come back later to add more.

I tend to look at the creators intention and use it as a core for reviewing, aesthetics are bonus for me. I always use MAL's Guidelines as my framework in my reviews, but it's a fact that being upfront than playing safe will always gain attention no matter how wrong or right you are.

Try to watch Youtube Channels or try to look for great reviewers as your reference.

I'd start by trying to identify cause and effect in small instances throughout a story.
I feel like most of what you're looking to recognize stems from there as a core.

@Peaceful_Critic explained the terms pretty well.

As for anime reviews, I think it's less so that people are specifically looking out and noticing these things, but likely rather just them naturally noticing these things when watching anime because these aspects matter to them.

Like some have said, perhaps watching more shows will get you to notice these things a little more. Or maybe you can spend a little time letting episodes of anime you've watched seep in (rather than going straight to someone else's opinion)?
If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

Yes, and write a review with 5 sentences, 4 of which are used in the "enjoyment" section.

I'll let you in on a little secret. There's this thing called google that can explain basically every term to you that you're not familiar with. It's fascinating. I recommend you give it a try. We're not a dictionary -.-
I probably regret this post by now.

Thank you for all the replies!

I'll try to watch more anime and be on the lookout for these things.

In the end though, if it's entertaining, it will probably get a 10/10 from me.

I'm going to add some more common ones, that might be useful to you.

Cliche':
Something overused, and shows no original thought.
Sentence:"This character has a cliche' personality."

Trope:
An important or recurring theme
Sentence:" A character in a harem are first violent to the main, then warms up to them, this is called a tsundere trope."

Plot Armour:
It's basically a buzz word that means because of the plot than this character isn't going to die.

Protagonist:
The main, main character of the story(who you follow the perspective of).

I have to correct you on some of those.

Character development is not necessarily changing of a character. It could be addition.

And a trope is a literary device that follows a given set of defined standard.

Ie, the main love being a tsundere is not the trope (that is a cliche) but the violent then lovey dovey character known as a tsundere is the trope itself.

Weird, I never heard it used that way.I assumed it meant growth since development generally meant it.

Oh, oops wrong trope. Thanks, I'll fix that one.

You don't have to know these things to review a series. Just discuss how you felt after watching it, or what you thought of the story it told.

Honestly these terms are pretty simple.

"Plot progression" just means the sequence of events in the story.

"Pacing" just means the speed and timing at which stuff happens. For example, does a lot happen at the beginning, or is are there many episodes of buildling up and introducing the setting before the story really kicks into high gear?

"Character development" is how a character changes as a person over the course of the story. For example, a person turning good or evil.
Avatar character is Gabriel from Gabriel DropOut.

1. Do not, and I mean DO NOT, restate the synopsis.

2. For every opinion you give out, elaborate on why you think this way.

If you think something is good give out a reason why. If you think something is shit give out a reason why. If you want to kill yourself after watching, give out a reason why.

I agree with many, watch a fuckton of anime and you'll understand what works and what's over done so you won't have phrases of "falling into her tits was very original" and people mocking you for it.
