I've been thinking about this. What makes a noob. Is it someone who has little experience with anime, hasn't watched much, is unfamiliar with other facets of Japanese culture, etc? What do you think? And if someone is a noob, when do they stop being a noob?

For me it depends. I'd say they should have spent some time in the fandom (maybe a month or two,) seen or been familiar with a good amount of anime (aka know about most non-obscure series and not just mainstream shonens) and be motivated to learn more about the community and watch more series. If they satisfy these requirements, I'd consider them a true anime fan. If they liked anime but didn't have the same familiarity with the community or the drive to watch and learn more, I'd consider them a fan but a casual one (and the term casual isn't meant to be derogatory in this case.)

This is meant to be a friendly discussion string so please be courteous and open-minded, thank you.

Maybe after they finish a few, they might have an idea of what a good anime is.
To be honest, I have been watching anime for five years and still feel like a noob.

you're not a noob once you've watched enough anime to know your favs aren't unique to the point they are special snow flakes
and you stop complaining something is generic and instead bring up how the show under delivers compared to other shows of its genres or plot idea

@Deknijff That's a great point - when I first started watching anime everything was really novel and amazing to me. I also wasn't much of a TV watcher before I got into anime too, so I had very little experience with shows in general. Because my standards were nonexistent from so little experience, I thought things like Fairy Tail were fantastic at first XD

"True anime fan" only exists as a term for other people to be branded as fakes and feel that they are above others. I generally don't like to use the term.

I don't consider myself very involved in the community and I'm not really driven into watching that much anime. I consider myself a casual.

That said while it is true that generally more anime watched is more discussion to be had, but some people watch fewer yet their thoughts/opinions are still able to resonate with me and others who've watched alot seemed to sometimes dig themselves further into the pit of stubbornness.

@BurningSpirit That was my mistake. I don't mean the term in a way to look down upon any other "type" of fan. We're all here because we enjoy anime and it would be rude to think any one person is invalid because of they way they decide to enjoy anime. I'm not trying to affect anyone by this discussion, I'm just curious as to opinions on the matter.

I didn't mean that you specifically implied it, your thread seemed friendly enough to encourage discussion. However the idea that there's some threshold of anime experience that graduates you from "noob" to "true anime fan" is already branding a bunch of people within various levels of experience.

I think the concept that it takes "X no. of anime" to make someone better at discussing anime is laughable, unless anime is really the only thing they watch. Anime isn't this magical different thing from any other medium, your taste and depth of thought can come from watching any other show. I'd have a lot more to talk about to someone who is interested in the mystery genre, and happens to delve into anime just for mystery anime than I would someone who plowed countless hours watching anime yet cannot understand that "moe" isn't a genre but an art style, so criticising an anime as "moe" addresses neither to plot nor character progression.

@BurningSpirit That's true. The reason I created this topic is because that exact thing interests me - why and how do people classify other people in this community? Everyone has different opinions and personalities and there's no need to classify them, but terms like "casual" "noob" and "shit taste" seem to be quite prevalent, and often are used to invalidate opinions based on factors like what anime they like, how much they have seen, etc.

I can't say too much since I'm still a noob , but I've seen a lot of people who overrate their favourite anime and jugde it without accepting its flaws . When you haven't seen many shows , you think every anime is special and a masterpiece .

Exactly. This false sense of exclusivity and the constant newbie hazing is what what pushes a lot of people who watch anime into not associating with the ''anime community" at all.

@BurningSpirit I'm sure this kind of problem happens in lots of other fandoms too. I only really know from the anime fandom, but it's just so disappointing. Fandoms and communities like MAL are supposed to be places where you can be yourself and talk to other people that share your interests. I'm often afraid to share my opinions because I feel like I won't have a valid say in the matter as a "noob"

Honestly I think you stop being a ''noob'' when you have a greater understanding of the medium, meaning what different genres are and all that stuff.

For an anime noob to git gud, he must first learn to get rekt. Take him out of his comfort zone and throw him off the cliff into a dense forest of anime he's never seen. Only by surpassing this mysterious forest can he evolve from being an anime noob. Otherwise, he shall be stuck forever within the small confines of his anime safehouse and never develop outside of the safety of what he is most comfortable with.

when they stop making broad generalizations about anime or think only this amount of mainstream anime is unique and the rest are all shit,
or stupidly complain about seasonals yet do nothing to change their persperctive
there are people who have 500+ completed yet still think like this so /shrug

Sometimes it is not that, it could simple mean that your interest in a specific genre has decline throughout the years.

for eg, I was a big battle shounen fan when I was younger, but now I'm more into mystery/thriller series.

After 50-80 days watched. After that point you have probably seen most of the "core" classics, or at least heard about them, and have at least a general familiarity with most genres. If you have seen a wide variety of shows you need less, if you have watched just a few long running ones you may need more.

Haha, SAO is still one of my favorites because at the time I had seen fewer than 10 anime. Now, even after close to 150 shows, I still highly regard even though I know its obvious flaws.

After a year depending on how much anime they've seen and explored different genres. Though quanta isn't everything. I generally think of people as noobs when they are over excited about everything but still don't know shit. Noobs should be humble.

Knowing much about japanese society isn't really a given considering it's anime as a medium we're into, not society as a whole. But for most interest comes naturally after watching anime.

I don't think it's about how many you watch as much as when you develop your personal tastes and are able to judge a series both from your personal degree of enjoyment but also from a more objective and technical point of view.

This comes obviously with time\exposure to anime but it also depends on your personal growth as a person, a watcher and an observer. 100 or 1000 it's not really the point imho.

Savage... And a tad bit elitist :^) and kinda true too I guess.

I dunno, can't say it really matters. Maybe when you start finding things on your own and know your tastes as opposed to following top 10s on Youtube and watching what is popular right now, dunno. It kinda makes me wonder why do people care so much about what makes a veteran, when you stop being a newbie etc. I see those threads from time to time and it always makes me think: why do people care?
