There's tons of sad western shit out there. There's a lot of bad anime, but there's also good anime. There's a lot of bad TV shows/movies, but there's also good Tv shows/movies.

It's rather subjective. I never cry while watching anime but some movies made me shed a tear.

I think the main reason is because most anime is perfect. By that, I mean the characters are beautiful and the world is beautiful. It's much easier to feel sympathy for (ex) a perfect girl -which is perfect precisely because she is artificial- than it is for a mere human girl, that depsite the new-age special effects still remains human and therefore imperfect.

It depends. For me, the anime send more emotions than a TV show. I didn't cry at a TV show, not even once, but I can't remember how many times I cried at an anime. I almost started crying even when I was reading a manga.

Combination of soundtracks, animation, and incredible voice actors. Anime also tends to have more room for building on characters with flashbacks, making us care about them more. Westerns rarely have any flashbacks, and any details to a character's past is usually revealed through dialogue.

I don't know about you but I tend to zone out when a character goes on a long rant about his past, because 1) you don't know if he's telling it as it is and, 2) it's boring to listen to. Show us, don't tell.

With animation you can also convey more emotions and make their acting more convincing than that of real, human actors, where everything is riding on their own ability to act. Though as far as voice acting goes, the Japanese have it perfected down to a tee.

It's way easier to get attached to these drawings that slightly resemble humans yet are different, than to humans themselves.

Most likely because they have a distinct design that catch our attention when it see them while all we see when we look at a human is an unremarkable "another one".

cause Anime only need a good seiyuu (BGM/Animation/Plot aside)

while in western tv show, you have to worry about the voice PLUS acting.
again, plot aside.

does WWE counts as western TV shows, cause Ric Flair retirement made me cry, a bit.

I don't know, I cry easily, so yeah.

Also are you sure you watch enough western shows, there definitely should be some tearjerkers out there.

What have you watched? I mean it's not like I can pop over to your profile and see what you have and haven't seen yet with regards to western shows on MAL. I'm pretty sure even google would give you better recommendations than random people who know nothing about you and who probably know anime better than western movies anyway.

The Shire theme ends me every time.

@ Topic - Anime tends to appeal directly to emotions more. The characters' feelings can be emphasized by their designs more as well. Live action requires more inference into the human condition to understand which emotions are running high at that time. When I cry, I'll tell you what. It ain't as obvious as this:

Looks like someone hasn't watched Old Yeller. Or Bridge to Terabithia. Or Whale Rider. Or damn near most of the Disney/Pixar animated films.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

I personally never cried for any of the 2 but I do have more "feels" when I watch anime for whatever reason.

Maybe because my curiosity gets attached more easily to animated characters because each character is actually a character made "alive" by his author (and the animation studio ofc) with his own personality and everything that goes with it, while US TV shows are actors/regular humans who just play a role.

There are indeed a lot of great western shows out there and if you want to watch something for the plot just watch Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones or something like that rather than an anime.

I started watching anime mostly because I didnt have any decent TV series left to watch, and couldnt tell myself to watch the godamn Flash and Arrow (seriously after 1-2 seasons of that shit you get tired).

Used to think anime was for weirdos but then I started watching "just to watch something". Started with Fairy Tail and SAO as they were the ones on french TV... so that's not really the best thing but I did have a good time watching and an even better time watching other animes I watched since then, and will surely have a good time again when I watch more anime now and in the future.

About visuals, sure a good movie or US series can be stunning with 2017 special effects, supermega HD quality and spaceships, but a beautiful fight animated well feels just as amazing to watch even if technically it's probably much easier to realize (not an expert tho I may be wrong)

Plot in anime aint no Game of Thrones, but what makes me like it just as much if not more than "regular" Tv shows is that there's no real life barrier in anime, everything comes out of the mind of a japanese author with a different culture than mine and the characters are attaching without being ordinary

wtf western tv series makes peoples cry(not cartoon) especially western movies
Since Koe no Katachi has a very high rating her on MAL, rated by nearly 100k users currently should we try to upvote the movie on the worlds largest database related to films? This movie only has around 4,5k votes at the moment. Let's all vote and make the rating higher?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5323662/

if we make it more popular it will raise more money so it will support the anime industry and make anime more popular between all the peoples since IMDb is not an anime site
so more quality anime will be made

Anime is pretty melodramatic so it's easier to cry to. Being too melodramatic can have an adverse effect though like Madoka tries way too hard to make you cry and I end up not shedding a single tear while watching it. Grimgar also had an episode that desperately wants you to cry for a character that died but I barely knew the dude as a character to care enough to cry for his death.

Anime simply have the ability to provide more fantasy than western shows and characters are more appealing (Aside from characters' personality and plot).
Most western shows are about some realistic measures. But Anime brings that some fiction, Ideals & Worlds that you maybe wish for and have the ability to portray them.
Also animation always have the ability to bring more attention, thus it can pull strings to show emotions perfectly.

Still there are many amazing western shows, and such industry deserves to be around.

There have been plenty of anime that has made me cry. There has also been plenty of western TV shows that have made me cry, as well as novels and movies. One medium doesn't inherently do one thing better than the other. It's just down to having a good story with a good cast of characters.

If you mean western cartoon, i agree. I have watched a lots of western cartoon and never cry. You know, Anime have different characteristics than western cartoon. Well, i think the main factor is the story, animation, dialog, seiyuu, and soundtrack. All of that perfect combination from Anime give more emotions than western cartoon.

Idk, but personally I like Scott McClouds thesis about abstract/iconic representations of something being easier to identify with, to interpret in ways that make you subjectively relate to them, than more realistic representations. It makes sense for me that the less specific, individual a representation is the easier you can project parts of yourself into them and establish an emotional connection. Plus it pretty much aligns with my personal experiences where in anime lots of stuff can make me easily cry while I almost never cry in live action.
Of course it is something you have to get used to at first. If you never read a comic or watched something animated it will take you a while to 'normalize' those perceptions so they can start having an effect. I'm pretty sure that's what he means by 'requiring greater levels of perception' at least.

Here is a small blog entry trying to explain his thesis:
https://comicbookglossary.wordpress.com/realistic-vs-iconic-representation/
I probably regret this post by now.

In TV series and movies you're looking at actors. You're constantly aware that you're watching people pretending to be someone else. You know it's just a show, no matter how good it is.

With anime it's different. Cartoon characters don't seem fake because they aren't trying to fool anyone. They exist in an entirely separate reality, and in that reality everything that happens to them is 100% legit.

So in a way, the further we are from reality, the more realistic things become. Funny, isn't it?

I have cried and felt sad on different occasions while watching western cartoons. I cry my eyes out every Christmas when I watch the Hey Arnold Christmas episode, I cried watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the cartoon not the Jim Carrey live action movie), I cried while watching the Regular Show finale and Batman Brave and the Bold finale, I remember crying while watching Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero because of Mr. Freeze's predicament with his wife, I cried at a scene in Book of life, I remember crying when I watched a Courage the Cowardly Dog episode that focused on squid aliens and another where Courage befriended an ugly Hunchback of Notre-dam guy,I cried at the ending of Jack and the Cuckoo Clockheart, I felt sad for Zuko when I saw his past, I felt sad for Korra when she was paralyzed from the waist down and was depressed, I felt sad for Finn from Adventure Time when he became super depressed because his deadbeat dad abandoned him again, I felt sad when Ice King's past was revealed.
