Pretty simple question: When you are around members of your immediate family or maybe just gathered relatives, do you blatantly curse? Are you allowed to curse? I'm referring to actual profanity aswell, not 'crap', 'dammit', 'hell', etc. I personally don't, it was always implied by my family when they were together that I shouldn't be profusely expressing everything with profanities. I think that it's polite to keep it toned down, but not necessary to completely annex the use of profanities. This is of course irrelevant around your friends and peers, I was always cursing around my mates just not every other word, which I find totally obnoxious. Do you guys think using tons of curse words for every other word in your dialogue is annoying? What's your opinion on profanity, who should you do it around and who shouldn't you do it around? |

I'll use 'bitch', 'ass', and 'bastard' around my mom. Not in the context of addressing her as a bitch/ass/bastard, of course. |

Yup. Dad doesn't care. Mom asks why I cuss so much, then I become self conscious for a moment and am all like "Oh yeah! I am cussing like a sailor aren't I?". What are you gonna do about it midget? HUH?!? I am a grown ass man! Or I just stop cussing so much around her. Don't do vulgarities though. No idea would I would be saying stuff like that around Mom and Dad. You know, If I was around them much anymore anyways. |

Yeah I can curse around family but not too much as my dad likes to say "you'll wear them out" Fucking shit thread though, get fucked fucker I can see the humor in something like that example above though, gotta be warranted though (it's not in this case lol) Though they fucking are fucking unique fucking words as fuck can fucking be fucking used a fucking lot in a fucking sentence and fucking still make fucking sense. It's annoying to read and listen to though I agree lol You shouldn't do it around people who expect you not to like a boss, parents aren't your boss and should be more on the friend side which I think is the underlying reason it's ok to curse around them |

You feel me? Although it has been proven when in situations where you are experiencing some type of pain, that use of profanity and specifically 'fuck' reduces the amount of pain marginally, although not remotely stopping the pain ahaha. I also agree with your family being more related to a friend, but that's usually not the case with cursing as it's pretty 50/50 on restricting profanities in homes. |

Sometimes. Not in a family dinner where the whole group is gathered. I do freely in front of my mom. And then depending of the family member individually I might let slip some words. I do try to curse less when there's family around thought. |

It's good practice not to use profanities unless you're trying to make a point to someone about their or someone else's behaviour. Profanities are ugly words that inspire bad feelings, so normally you should never use them around family that you have a healthy relationship with. |

Yes, It is also a mutual respect. They respect that I curse when I speak and they don't make a scene when a word goes out. Because of that, I am more inclined to be careful of my language. Respect me and I'll respect back, it's as simple as that. |

Well yeah, my parents are Asian, they would disown my ass without a second thought, but since I am already over 18, I'll be living under a bridge. But whenever I play video games, they usually don't mind as long as it's not too loud because I have little brothers. |

Grew up with a dad who curses, so curse words have no impact with me and i use them in front of anyone. Including family members. I try my best to not curse in front of children though. |

Seems everyone here has some nice parents. Chibi-Alice said: I try my best to not curse in front of children though. Yeah that's another big issue with profanities, parents seem to either allow cursing or completely disown you if you try to curse. And if you're part of the first group, you tend to start cursing at a younger age, what age do you think profanities become a regular part of your conversation with friends, etc? I have a nephew-in-law who's about 10-12 who tends to curse when he's stupid and can't help himself, what age is it really weird/gross for a kid to curse? |

I don't. Not out of consideration for them, but because I don't use profanity to begin with. Okay, that's not totally true. I use the term "bloody" quite a bit (only around family and close friends, funnily enough.) Years ago, I was told it was extremely offensive in Britain. For some reason, I found this highly amusing, so, as I didn't (and still don't) live in Britain, I picked it up. Most of the time, though, I just use the term "flippin'" (yes, with an apostrophe on the end.) I feel like it has more character than a lot of the alternatives. |
Important Note: I no longer - in any way, shape, or form - consider myself a moral nihilist (even in my old, convoluted definition of the term). I very much do believe there is such a thing as objective good and evil. In addition, I apologize for any of the posts I've made that are rude, aggressive, or otherwise unbecoming. I've always striven to walk a path befitting a follower of Christ, and now recognize some of my old comments here as misguided if not outright wrong. If you happen upon them, pray do not let them darken your view of the God I serve. He is kind, even if I, at times, have not been. |

I have a few principles in my life. One of them is not using swear words in conversations. I do swear when I'm alone though. I have a younger cousin who loves to swear when I make little mistakes or when he gets annoyed by the most stupidest things. When we're chatting online that is. He doesn't have the balls to swear when we are talking face to face. |

No. Never. My late grandfather, who claimed that he had never swore in his life, taught me that swearing is really, really bad and wrong. And ineed, I never swear in front of my family, and I very rarely swear in front of my friends too. Elegade said: Well yeah, my parents are Asian, they would disown my ass without a second thought, but since I am already over 18, I'll be living under a bridge. Well, that escalated quickly. |

Yeah, you bring up a funny but valid point. As my native language is German, whenever I speak German to my family we're often using profanity, maybe not outright using every form of it but just it's alot more casual for some reason. Pretty weird. Nice to see that alot of people started commenting say they don't, whether it's due to awkwardness, respect, etc. Glad you guys don't feel the need to curse all the time. |

Yeah depends on which family member. Never around my grandparents. Some lighter words around my mom. Ass, shit, damn. And around my brothers just about anything's on the table. I don't usually curse to offend people or anything though. I dunno more so to lighten the mood, or to like exaggerate or something. They're just words after all. I also barely curse in public. Never really at school, though since I'm really quite at school I don't really say much of anything there anyways. But yeah. |

Good stuff, I feel like profanity is good for some humor and stuff for sure but don't think it's that offensive anymore, maybe because I view it as a barrier. Once you get someone to the point that they start throwing out curse words every other word, it's kind of like they reached their limit and are malfunctioning haha. |
