As the title states does anyone ever experience anxiety when reading/watching a romance manga or anime.

Like that scene from SAO

or some scenes from Chobits

It just seriously gives me anxiety and I just don't know.
Currently watching Aah! Megami-sama where the girl beautiful and I just know that there is gonna be some old seducing guy in the anime.

Also I know the the guy pretty much arrives every time but he either does nothing or just slaps the guy on the wrist or something. Honestly your girl just harassed and your just gonna let it go?

This post may seem stupid I know but just wanted to get my thoughts out.
Does anybody else experience this?

I wouldn't say anxiety, but that kind of stuff is just uncomfortable to watch in general.

Read Berserk, you'll get desensitized about that kinda stuff in anime/manga and won't have to worry about that anymore

Most anime that deal with those kind of scenarios are often quite predictable with what will happen next and when it's as obvious as it is, it loses that feel and some even degrade to cringe instead, especially when in scenarios that are terribly executed, such as the SAO example.

Everyone have different reactions to those types of scenarios...

I suggest you to avoid School days like the plague and Manga made by Takeda Hiromitsu (both her normal manga and her H-manga)… XD

To answer your question the one in SAO didn’t provoke me anything... that type of scene appears from time to time in manga/anime and the culprit gets his punishment…

There are some works that the only things that made me experience is going to Google and seek a meme of Captain Picard *Facepalm* romance is a genre that I like to read/watch but sometimes it left me thinking that could have been resolved if the two have sit down and talked to each other… thus facepalming myself from time to time. ^_^

Yes. I usually afraid romance story I read/watch gonna turned out to be harem/love triangle.

I don't know if it's the same thing, but I find many anime, especially highly praised shoujo anime, to be too emotionally intense. To the point I usually drop such shows.
This season, I dropped Seiren and Murasame-kun no Revenge due to that feeling somewhere in the middle of the first episode. (that was quite unexpected for me)

On the other hand, SAO Fairy Dance arc Sugou/Oberon scenes were quite uncomfortable but bearable. Maybe because I knew Kirito is going to make it alright. Maybe it's because I've read the book first and knew it's going to turn out okay.

If it's a very well written scene then sure, but if it's just something stupid like SAO then no.

When you watch enough Hentai, it doesn't really affect you much...unless it's done well where it really gets to you. (Praise School Days!)

And don't worry about Aa! Megami-sama having disturbing scenes like that. The goddesses have too much hax for that to happen to them. ^_^

Maybe some people will find it ridiculous and I wouldn't call it "anxiety", but I was quite uncomfortable with some parts of Orange, because a good friend of mine is suicidal and in fact Kakeru behaved pretty similar. Otherwise the scenes were touching and I assume this is what a well written, depressed character looks like, if I can relate to his behavior (as far as I can tell as an outsider). At least, I can recognize this behavior in Kakeru and this friend.

Hmmm... I guess I would get triggered at times but the anxiety its like a regular thing whenever I watch/read anime/manga. I don't really know how to explain it but I guess its close to that.

Sad to hear about your friend. I hope he gets better :) and yeah I can see what you're saying that it's well written when you can relate to the story. Again I hope your friend gets better.

Thank you. I hope so. :/

The sexual scenes don't disturb me, they just annoy me. However, I dropped Sword art online after four or five episodes. I don't know why, but I wasn't interested.

If I get invested in an anime romance (even if it's not in a romance-genre anime,) I typically get nervous that the writers are going to shoehorn in some BS tragic ending for the sake of cheap feels (or, alternatively, that the romance is going to go nowhere.) Why do I get nervous about this? Because it happens in a lot of the anime and JRPGs I run across.

And, in direct answer to one of your points: Yes, Sugou made the whole second half of SAO uncomfortable for me.
Important Note: I no longer - in any way, shape, or form - consider myself a moral nihilist (even in my old, convoluted definition of the term). I very much do believe there is such a thing as objective good and evil. In addition, I apologize for any of the posts I've made that are rude, aggressive, or otherwise unbecoming.

I've always striven to walk a path befitting a follower of Christ, and now recognize some of my old comments here as misguided if not outright wrong. If you happen upon them, pray do not let them darken your view of the God I serve. He is kind, even if I, at times, have not been.

@Zeigis So wait Romance anime = Attempted rape and underage/online sex solicitation?

I think we found the problem. The problem is your definition of "Romance".

I'm with you on that one as well. Never really encountered the BS Tragic ending but definitely the romance not going anywhere.

Lol this is really bad advice.

Anime with romance as the main primary focus are generally terrible.

It must hurt to be so wrong: Nodame Cantabile, Your Lie in April, Kids on the Slope, Lovely Complex, Nana(despite some anxiety inducing stuff), Most Shinkai movies(despite me think 5cm is awful), Spice and Wolf, Clannad, Girl who leapt through time, Hotarubi no Mori e, Tatami Galaxy, Planetes, Nagi no Asukara, Anthem of the Heart, Snow White with Red Hair, Cross Game/touch/Baby Steps(even though it has a lot of sports in it, the romance is pretty big, especially in touch), White Album2, Emma. There is plenty of Romance-centric/romance heavy anime that is totally worth watching, and the OP is actually watchign My Love Story and Nodame Cantabile, so that's why I stopped addressing him because he's probably just a troll.

I'd like to ask but how am I a troll? I'm not trying to troll anybody an I'm just trying to get my thoughts out. I didn't say romance was attempted rape or solicitation I only gave examples of things that made me anxious of romance stuff. If you don't acknowledge SAO and Chobits romance then I don't know what you think of them.

Spice and Wolf? Planetes? Girl who lept through time? CROSS GAME!?

They have a plot and romance is a pretty good focus, but it's not about romance. Also lovely complex is terrible. So is Nana.

Actually, the ones you listed that really do actually have romance as the CENTRAL focus range from meh watchable to terrible with the exception of Snow White with Red Hair.

I felt like the romance in anime like Junketsu No Maria, Spice and Wolf, the Legend of the Legendary heroes, Gosick, Bakemonogatari and the like have more weight since they're not about the romance first.

Also, you bring up shoujo romances and didn't even mention My Little Monster. That's like one of the FEW romance focused anime that are actually good.

In another similar topic, I remembered a few good examples:
I could not watch Wagamote further than the opening of the first episode.
I dropped Sisters of Wellber somewhere at the beginning of "city of prostitutes" segment.

It's not like something was happening. It's the unknown that was scary, I guess.
