Is there a 'number of Anime watched' requirement? Like only those who have watched more than 50 series can apply?

I'd be interested in people's opinions on how to handle a synopsis for a compilation movie (ex. Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy) or movies that while original content, are basically an abbreviated version of the original TV series (ex. Galaxy Express 999). While there will be some explanation warranted into the synopsis about the fact that it is a compilation or movie version, there will often be great similarities in the plot/characters that tie back to the synopsis written for the original TV series. Do we use the original TV series synopsis as a base, making edits (such that there will be lots of similarities with the TV synopsis text) or try for something completely original?

We'd rather have a new synopsis for each new series/film of the franchise. Using the same one for all (when we have many writers and editors) is not only unoriginal, but also somewhat lame. This has been under discussion in the club for a long time now, though. Hope this helps! :)

It does, thanks! Many of the series I am looking to do a synopsis for have compilation movies and I hope to do them as well so this is good to know.

A question:

Though I wrote synopsis to animes (not in mal), it's only a certain amount. So... Is there a minimum for entries I should help with?

@EfiChan There is no hard limit either way. We realize that our writers have only seen a set number of anime. We only ask that our members are relatively active. As for the natural extreme of your question, we'll cross that bridge when we get there. For now, think about applying.

I just wanted to document the fact that I sent in my application approximately 10 minutes ago :) I'm looking forward to your reply!

I think MAL Rewrite is a great idea. It gives people an opportunity to be creative, to sharpen their writing skills, and to actually positively contribute to the anime community. Kudos to the founders.

I don't see why an editor has to be a writer as well. It might help in some cases but I wouldn't say it is necessary to be able to create an interesting synopsis in order to be able to edit other synopses.

I don't consider myself the most creative writer unless it is something I'm extremely passionate about, but I believe I'm still able to (properly) edit different pieces of literature.

@Crocross That's an interesting point. It's true that you don't need to be a creative writer to check someone's facts and grammar, but an editor isn't limited to just doing that busy work. An editor has to be able to reconstruct sentences and reorganize thoughts, without changing the meaning, to allow for ease of reading. And in rare cases, the editor may have to completely rewrite something, though I think with our new writers this won't be a problem.

In addition, in order to increase efficiency in our application process, editors rate the applicants synopses which coordinators use to approve/deny applicants as well as provide advice to applicants.

At least this is my understanding, I may be completely wrong on every point...

@ziggyopolous I think some of the points you brought up do make sense for why editors need to be writers as well. However, I think in general that's only needed for rare cases and even then it might depend on the editor.

I was mostly asking out of curiosity. I do still believe it's easier for some people to capture the meaning from someone else's work and reorganize the thoughts to make it more coherent rather than writing a creative piece from scratch.

Anyways, as I've mentioned, I was mostly curious and I appreciate you replying to my post :)

While we also look at how well an editor can work with other people's writing, we need to know if an editor can construct complete, error-free sentences from scratch. The writing test is not (just) a test of creativity as far as the editor applicants are concerned; it's mainly to understand the editor's understanding of the concepts of synopsis construction. Making an editor take both tests gives us a complete picture of all of the editor's strengths and weaknesses.

@neekoneko Thank you for the additional clarification. So, from my understanding, someone can take both tests but only be an editor in the end (assuming they "pass" the tests)?

Oh, there's one more reason why we make editors take both the tests: sometimes an applicant fails the editing test, but writes a brilliant synopsis. We extend an invitation to such people to join as writers.

About how long does it usually take to receive a yay/nay reply?

Super late but i shot an application in for both the writer and the editor position (i incorrectly assumed both applications were required but how and ever trying to edit that car crash was quite fun)
And I'm here in your pocket
Curled up in a dollar
And the chain from your watch around my neck
And I'll stay right here until it's time

MAL Rewrite's scope only includes synopses right now. As a Rewrite editor, you can write and edit synopses for manhwa and manhua. We do not have the bandwidth to work on characters, etc., yet. I hope this answers your question!

It is just a number of how many anime/manga you have watched/read. It isn't asking for your entire list. Just the number of things you've completed.
