Been a fan of anime since around 2000; originally getting into some of the anime movies played on the Sci-Fi Channel like Galaxy Express 999 and then really getting into it further due to Gundam Wing on Toonami.
Favorite genre is mecha, and particularly like late 70's and 80's anime, but there are certainly many high quality shows I enjoy from after that as well.
Favorite anime includes Escaflowne, FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, Gundam (original series and Zeta in particular), Galaxy Express 999 (TV show and movies), Wolf's Rain and RahXephon.

Describing Evangelion, I wouldnt use the term Mecha, I would use that term...loosely? Its the destruction of a mecha anime, its more Psychological and about the characters. They start normal and you eventually watch their psychologic breakdown the more you watch it.
You should definetely watch the movie End of Evangelion, which what the intended ending for the series was going to be.

though its not groundbreaking, its a bit better than episodes 24 and 25 of the original series and gives more insight
