Dammit!!!DAT cliffhanger is killing me!!!

there were some epic/amazing scene in this episode. Midori's abs tho....no comment..
i'm guessing Ochako's power is telekinesis ? something like Tornado/Tatsumaki's power from OPM ? well, i'm looking foward to see her action and obvious Midori's action too. i'm very curious what kind of power it is.

great episode overall.
looking foward for the next episode.

This series is getting even better... I loved Izuku's training scenes. He and All Might have great chemistry. All Might's random English is the best part. Especially the "American Dream." We also got introduced to Ochako, which is nice. I'm excited to see how Izuku does in the entrance exam!

The episode was nice, but a little boring. It was cool to see how Deku became stronger but there wasn't any action in this episode so I'll give a 3/5. But I'm really looking forward to the exam! :)

Hi!
I just finished the episode. It was nicely done, they follow the manga very well, I appreciate that. But I hope it stays this way and not being like: nicely following then they realize they don't have time or reached the manga, so they wrap things up fast and give it a horrible alternative ending.
Slow? I hear/read this with too many animes, mangas, books etc. Are you rrunning somewhere or what? People are too impatient these days. (If you think it's slow placed go and read some Agatha Christie, 80 pages without a single deadbody. Don't misunderstood she is one of my favorites) And no, "but this is an anime so it should be more fast" isn't a good reason.
I am not so happy with the voiceacting so far, but I will get used to it. I was so worried about Present Mic, but his voice is so annoying it's perfect. XD Although I am not happy how he was animated. It felt for me he was ehm neglected compared to the others (especially, with his eyes, no I'm not that picky or something, just for me his eyes in the manga they appear as an array of circles, giving him a little bit insane look, I just missed that).
I can't wait for.... Present Mic's classmate to appear(is it too much spoiler? sorry if it is) . He is my favorite, I hope they found him a fitting voice!
Thanks, and sorry for butchering your language.

"Namba wa heero, Ooru Maito"
Mah homie Midoriya gonna begin training, good ruck!
All might got his power from someone else, not surprising and now Midoriya will inherit his power.
That fridge crushing scene was done well, All might got the POWAH!
The music is good, pacing is good, animation is good, art is good, I like this anime.
Character development isn't going bad too
AYY MAH BOY MIDORIYA GOT BUFFED YO!
The training was quite ridiculous but it's shounen so I don't give a fuck!
He built his body well, gonna become the strongest hero
He got only 1 hair, he got only a very small proportion of All might's power, but now he has a quirk, good start!
The grill is here, maybe she is the main girl, dunno.

Yeah but the show establishes that without quirk there's a limit to what you can do. You can be pretty smart but if a quirkless body can't stand the power of an enemy, there's not really a lot to do. Also, the test that comes in the next episode shows that you need means to at least inmobilize an enemy. Without a quirk, doing that in a believable fashion seems hard to do.

But hey, at least MC has spirit. Now he has power.

Academia would made more impact if Izuku would be Quirkless but still manage to overshadow people with quirk. But hey, i could as well go another way: He trained 10 months, in that time he could have discovered his own quirk and show that what the doctor said to him back then was the rule but not the exception.
Thus my problem is not Izuku having a quirk in the first place, my problem with it is the "Power as a simple gift" that is NOT his own power in the first place but from someone else. Yeah, as All Might said, his power would not even be his own power, but we are talking about Izuku here.
But hey, if you like it that way, more power to ya.
I dont dislike Academia but i dont like it either, its just "oh well" until now. I just think that the "Power as a simple gift" thing doesnt work imo and doesnt have any impact especially after his shown spirit in this episode. Whatever.

BTW: I dont understand why Fai is getting so much shit thrown his way for her opinion.
Because she talks shit while having RWBY stuff. RWBY is an action show as well, but with some of the worst writing ever conceived.

Though, not that it matters anyway. Her opinion. However, like people have pointed out, barely 2 to 3 chapters have been adapted. The show is taking the slow route, which is good. No to mention that the manga itself is a long running shounen, which rarely get good till at least a couple chapters in and take forever to get good anime wise. It's basically like she's calling it completely shit without watching what makes it good (according to the manga readers at least). Of course the set up is similar, there's only a couple ways to set up a storyline like this. However, it's what they do after the set up that matters. Which is what episode 4 looks to be about.
Anime sucks.

Yup, for many people here anime is a chore instead of a hobby. And then when super popular anime shows up while also garnering a lot of hate, people feel like they have to pick a side. That has become so ingrained in them that that the first look at a new series is at either the "best thing ever" or "complete shit" extremes.

I enjoy this anime because it is fun, simple right? But so many people just try to pick apart shit in new series that isnt even there. Sometime even being hypocritical by enjoying super edgy shitty series that has way fewer redeeming qualities (Not talking about anyone here in particular, and I dont want to name series). Then they bash MC's for being "wimpy" because they want to escape their own lives so bad that every character needs to be Kamina so they can feel good. Basically they all want to feel smart and validated, and shitting on something someone else like somehow accomplishes that...

ANYWAY, I have really been having fun with this series. And really it is all because of Deku. This brings me back to when I watched Ippo as an underdog story, but with way more 'emotion'. And hopefully more engaging side characters.

I don't know what you're talking about. He already did that in the last episode. Have you actually seen it though?
That would be stupid to assume a quirkless boy could become a hero where 80% of the people have quirks even vilains.
He doesn't have the money to become Batman either. :>

Interesting premise, but why is pacing so slow? Three episodes for the origin maybe wouldn't be too much if it was two cour anime, but since it has only 13 episodes, it just feels like a wasted time.

Man, is there still people that doesn't know that this is an adaptation of a supposedly long-running shounen instead of a 13-episode anime original? Expect the pace to be the same as all other shounen with lots of episodes and deal with it. This having a 13-episode first season doesn't mean that it needs to rush and ruined itself just to reach the good parts faster because people are apparently too impatient.

Establishing characters and the world is not wasted time. The action scenarios and such will mean jack if the characters and the world they are in are not properly established.

Don't worry though there will be action soon andthe anime will end with a major arc that sets the tone for future big events.

I agree. rushing to the good stuff will just ruin the impact of those awesome events.

If anyone is so impatient I strongly urge them to read the manga (you should anyway because it is great) it's only 87 chapters and the pacing is so fast (after the introduction part of the series) you should blaze through them like nothing.

Why is the opposite of slow pacing automatically ''rushed''? fast pacing would work a lot better. Studio is clearly stalling to reach a specific point because it's only 1 cour so they don't want to burn through all the chapters, not because the adaption actually needs it.

It would have been a lot better if the test already started in this episode.

You know, I've started finding anime to be a chore to watch but even I have the self-awareness to not start judging an anime as shit for not showcasing character development in the first 3 episodes. Finding anime a chore and being contrarian don't really go hand-in-hand.

It's really just people who have watched enough anime that they begin taking pleasure in talking down to others for enjoying things that they don't because they think of themselves as a "cultured anime-watcher" or some shit. They scour for and look for all kinds of reasons 'x' is shit, and then they search for people with the same opinions to circlejerk with and get validation from. It's honestly amusing. There's valid criticism and then there's useless pessimism that barely qualifies as criticism.

I was skeptical before when I read the manga (stopped at Chapter 20) and I was hoping that the anime would redeem this show for me and Bones managed to do that.

This is in my top 3 of this season now. The only thing that sucks is that it only got 13 episodes. I really hope it gets more seasons greenlit.

Maybe, maybe not, it depends on the contents being adapted. This is all subjective anyway so I won't really argue about it. 1.5 chapter per episode isn't even that slow when it's all talk and no action, especially when you compare it to all 100+ episodes shounen out there.

It is a bit slow due it being 1 cour, For example at the current pace they are going they could easily do 4-5 seasons but personally my main problem is not being able to see the full series animated in it's entirety because they are delaying potential episodes by only doing 13 when they have enough content. And even if they did animate 4-5 seasons at the current pace within a year of it airing it would easily have enough for another 3-4 cours. So it is a bit slow pacing if you want to see the full series animated from start to finish.

1. The premise - Superhero World etc

Done to death and in most of other cases way better.
Why should I watch this when I can just rewatch Samurai Flamenco in all of it's glory? At least that one is very meta in its approach towards portraying the evolution of superhero/tokusatsu genre.
Why should I watch this when I can just rewatch Tiger&Bunny and it's brilliant narrative on commercialization of superhero comic books?

Where is the hook? Because in the world where we have MCU, just being "hey we are about superheroes" is no longer enough. Especially if everything else is same as in every other shonen manga.

2. Izuku - Perfectly exemplifies the type of MC that you just want to root for

I don't know, so far All I wanted to do was punch him in the face. A predictable idealist goodie two shoes tryhard who cries a lot and teaches the viewer how not giving up is important to achieve your goals.

3. The mystery surrounding All Might

What mystery?

There are thousands of shows like this.
There are thousands of shows dealing with subject matter from this but in better more creative ways.

Time is money. Why should someone waste the said time on something that is subpar in quality and offers nothing new? Bones quality or not, this is the story that has been told thousands of times over anime in last decade or two.

Unlike the previous very kitschy season, this season is FULL of so many better shows that actually keep one's interest and are creative in their approach toward the subject matters at hand, so why should one watch something that one already saw thousands of times in other shows?

Boku no Hero Academy presents the same things thousands of other shonen manga/anime present. In exactly same straightforward manner. Without any real hook or promise to get better or be different from already VERY derivative genre.

Ok @Fai and everyone else arguing about this should just give it a rest. It's getting nowhere and you all seem to be stern on what your opinion of what good shows are. Fai it seems to not be a show that you enjoy, and that's completely fine. If you don't like it and it still hasn't pleased you, then there's nothing we can do about that. If you still want to watch it, feel free, but honestly, don't force yourself to watch it.

It's unfortunate, but all shows (this one included) don't tend to please everyone. It's near impossible because everyone has differing opinions. It'd be a miracle to see one. I understand why you have your opinion, but I don't share it. Everyone can express they're own opinion of course, but having a fruitless argument over it wont help. I hope everyone understands.

@Lulupus
Thats not the point. At least not mine. My point is that Izuku got his powers as a gift. I already know that he has to train to fully control his new powers, thats nothing new. So, no matter how hard he has to train, he still got them as a gift.

@PabloTheOffender

Sure, but again, the point from Fai (at least from what i could tell) is that it was done to death. I never watched RWBY, so i dont know what thats about, but when it comes to Academia and IF that was his point (it seems to be), then i have to agree.

@KonoYume
What does money have to do with anything? Besides, the Batman Formula would be, imo, way better than just getting quirk just because he doesnt have it and really wants it. That almost throws his hard work out of the window.
Look at Batman, he doesnt have powers but still was able to destroy some Heroes that have powers. Izuku could do the same, doesnt matter how money is involved here. ALMOST another example, Samurai Flamenco.

Again, i have to mostly agree with Fai. Academia does absolutely nothing new. Yeah, Izuku will now have to train to control his powers and what not but that was already done to death. I'll still watch it, but i dont expect anything out of this at all.
Why do it still keep watching this you ask? Because when i start something, i'll finish it.

But hey, you are gonna defend Academia to death, which is fine. And some people are expect more out of Academia, which should also be fine. Why expect more? Because some people want more, see more potential in it but it doesnt offer.

It is.

Its not bad to use a setting that already was used, but there should be at least something that separates it from the rest. As it stands Boku no Hero is pretty every single other shonen manga, just dressed up in superhero aesthetic. There's nothing to separate it from already very derivative genre.

There's nothing to make this its own work. Character interactions, character motivations, plot points, the main character personality, etc - everything exists in like a ten dozens of other shonen works. You can change names and setting and literally insert this whole story so far into any of known shonen works be it naruto bleach or one piece or dozens of others. There's nothing that makes this work unique or different and there's nothing in the execution that would make it feel different from the rest.

Well the real test is obviously who will beat the 0 point boss, as a real hero will not do it for the reward....

I expect everyone to fight over the points while he beats the 0 point monster alone, ending with 0 points but getting through.

I just wonder if he was given power or is was just to motivate him and a bunch of lies.

Its not wrong to expect there to be some sort of a hook in first three episodes of 12 episode show, beyond "well he is just a bullied wimp who wants to git gud"
Pretty sure it's been long established since Episode 1 that he's not a wimp and is just very emotional and strong willed but regardless of that, there are things there that have been a hook

1. The premise - Superhero World etc
2. Izuku - Perfectly exemplifies the type of MC that you just want to root for
3. The mystery surrounding All Might

Just to name a few

Well if only people stop obsessing over "subverting tropes" every time a new popular show comes out, and analyze the show carefully and logically, there are plenty of highlighting features in the first episode itself.

So, I will like to point out what this reddit guy has to say on his first impressions abt the show(sometimes I feel redditfags are more logical than MAL people):-

Remember that guy has only seen the anime, and he realized what the show is all about later on in the series.
