What is your earliest tokusatsu experience? It could be anything from watching Godzilla or Japanese sci-fi movies in theaters, to watching Power Rangers or Ultraman on TV.

My earliest toku memory was when I was 4 years old. My mom had bought a copy of Godzilla 1985 and I decided to watch it. Never again has a movie changed my life as dramatically. Not only did I become a super Godzilla fan, but the movie inspired me to one day become a movie director so I could bring my image of Godzilla to the world.

Now, feel free to share your experiences, fellow tokutakus.

Mine was when I was about four or so. It was watching Power Rangers. When I started school I'd wake up early every morning to watch it. My favorites were Jason and Trini.

Oh and here is something a bit random about tokus. Anyone here know of Stargate SG-1? Well it is considered a toku in Japan.

Not surprising, actually. Tokusatsu is the Japanese term for special effects, so everything that's mostly SPFX-oriented falls under that umbrella (like anime = all animation and hentai = all porn).

It makes sense to me that Stargate is considered Toku there. Because tokusatsu really refers to any drama or film that uses a considerable amount of special effects, as it basically means "special effects/SFX" (it comes from from tokushu satsuei). Overseas we're used to thinking of toku as super heroes like Sentai and Kamen Rider because that's what's been imported, and monster movies like Godzilla of course.

Which brings me to my first experience with tokusatsu. It was Power Rangers, of course! I was around 7 years old when it start in North America. I loved Trini. I never missed an episode after school and on Saturday mornings. After that I watched the spin-off Masked Rider series and Beetle Borgs too.

More than a decade later I was still watching Power Rangers off on (and still am to this day), and I began watching PGSM, and then followed up with Kamen Rider Hibiki (mostly because I was in love with Shibue Jyoji, Tuxedo Kamen, at this point) and Mahou Sentai MagiRanger. Now I can't imagine a week going by without watching an episode of Kamen Rider. XD

I think it was either power ranger (1st season) or Ultraman. Im not really sure though. If it's the real tokusatsu then it'll be Ultraman.

I guess my first tokusatsu experience was Power Rangers on tv when I was a little lad, but I don't really want to count that.

My first and only real tokusatsu was Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. I instantly fell in love with Keiko Kitagawa.

Kamen Rider is just something you can't live without. I pity those poor people in Japan the 90's who didn't get any actual KR series, just a few movies. XD

In PGSM I loved Sailor Mercury. Never been a fan of Kitagawa Keiko. Have you guys checked out her jdramas?

My very first tokusatsu was Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger. And Kamen Rider Decade.
I used to watch Power Rangers SPD just for laugh. But, I liked the history at the end, and I've found a strange name in a toku download list. And it was the original.
And bang.
Yeah, my english sucks.

There's a lot like me, dude. XD
There's also some kids (6-7 years old) who are discovering toku with Kamen Rider Black.
My kids will watch original tokusatsu. :3

Well, I don't know a lot of people like you. I mean, if you go to a animecon, the toku rooms (if there are any), are full of mostly people my age.

And Black? Why Black? Black is fine, of course, but isn't it easier to start with the new stuff?

No, the new stuff are just subtitled.
Kamen Rider Black, Changeman, and others have PT-BR audio, so it's easier to kids watch.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 3 I think, or maybe Season 2 too. All I know is that Tommy was the White Ranger at that time. For some reasons, they always aired S3 reruns, instead of going from the first season. And after that, Zeo, Turbo and In Space. I used to watch it every day after school, as they aired it every day here. It was also the initial airing here. I was about seven years old. Sadly, my toku experience ended for a while with In Space, since they never aired Lost Galaxy and the rest on the TV. I only got to watch two episodes about the Black Ranger from Lost Galaxy and that's it. I later watched Dino Thunder and Ninja Storm dubbed on German, but didn't really get into it. It wasn't until five years ago that I decided to download a SPD for some reasons. I liked it but never finished it. That's it with my PR experience.

My first Japanese Toku experience would be Garo and PGSM (few episodes of both) 4 years ago, one episode of Ryukendo two years ago, and shortly after it, Kamen Rider Kiva, the first one I finished watching. And after that Den-O and W. I tried watching Shinkenger but didn't get into it, and when Gokaiger started I wanted to give it a try and liked it, but wanted to wait for more episodes to come out and forgot about it. Guess I'll watch Gokaiger after watching some other Sentai, as it'll be more interesting. The first Sentai I'll finish will probably be Dekranger, which I'm currently watching. About Godzilla movies, I've never watched them. I watched AVGN's reviews of each movie, and well... some really are ridiculous, but I am planning on watching them all one day. Thankfully all movies are available on japanese, as the US versions were edited if I'm not mistaken. They even added some new characters.

I remember watching MMPR when I was a kid. I also watched that horrible show, Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills. But that's about it. I didn't watch any other toku until a year ago, when I decided to watch Kamen Rider Wizard and KR Black for the first time.

And it's funny part is I didn't get into toku after anime. It was the reverse.

Kamen Rider. Yes, that one, good old classical. And without translation to boot. And it was some random episode(s), not even the first ones. Still it was enough to hook me, as I was just a kid, right in the target demographic.

There is such thing as shit taste. Only idiots think that every "work of art" should have the same value.

Persona anime are good. Deal with it.

It was a Kamen Rider movie that I watched with a "club" of sorts. Pretty sure it was Shin Kamen Rider.

However, I only got into it myself with Kamen Rider Black and Ultraman Nexus. The first series I finished was Ultraman Nexus.

My first Toku was defiantly, Godzilla. I just absolutely adored the Big G when I was a kid. My Father tracking down all the movies before the time of the internet. My favourites (and they still are) will always be the Showa Era ones. Nothing makes me feel like a kid again then watching them.

I always get a giddy thrill whenever I see models and miniatures being stomped on.

As for the tv side of things... I'm gonna say Power Rangers, but if where sticking just to Japanese shows than, Ultraman.

It was Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad or VR Troopers. I forget which one aired first, but they aired in a block and I watched both when they started. Power Rangers was popular at the time, but I resisted watching it until I got into these two shows. SSSS was my obsession and is as good today, still low budget but also still clever which great music, meanwhile VR Troopers was less good at the time and even looking back.

The first Japanese tokusatsu I got to see was Gingaman.
