No fucking mercy... and I like that. Madhouse is doing justice to this arc, they have done a wonderful job capturing the violence and suspense of the manga. This arc is simply too amazing.

lol btw every time I hear the words Gyro, I only think of the greek pita wrap.

One word: EPIC. Seriously, I think it's even better than when I read it, Madhouse sure knows what they are doing with it.

so Gyro got eaten by the ants or what ???

They took him to the Queen, he will most likely get eaten by her.

Shit son, I wanna kiss every single person working for Madhouse. Every episode is amazing from beginning to end! Good, good. Loved the way they did Gyro's flashback.
Gon and Killua are appearing each time less, but that'll be something normal throughout the arc... can't say I like it, but it's definitely well written.

Ponzu died. Honestly she was kind of useless. Heck I barely remember her or Pokkle since they were both fairly minor in the Hunter Exam. The two are defanitly the weakest Hunters to date though since they both barely had any powers and went down without much of a fight, plus Pokkle was really dumb letting himself get caught off guard like that considering how well aware the other Hunters in the show have been. Plus Ponzu was so weak she got beaten by just a regular average Joe chimera ant, which was really pathetic. I really don't care that much, I'm sorry.
On a side no it is totally Killua's fault that Ponzu died. If he hadn't killed that old dude then Ponzu would have lost the tournament in the Hunter Exam since she has no fighting prowess, and that means she would never would have learned Nen and teamed up with Pokkle to go to NGL.

What I did enjoy thugh was the first half of the episode, Gyro's flashback was incredibly well done, if not incredibly pointless considering that the show implied that he is dead already. But who knows maybe he'll come back as the Chimera ant king or something like that.

umm Ponzu never became a hunter. She got trapped in the cave and Gon carried her out when she was unconscious, remember? so she never advanced

i am sorry people saying that it is a non-filler episode, and people saying how good the gyro flash back was.... my question is: was there filler episodes in the series, and is gyro supposed to be important main character in the manga or is it a filler?
if you feel you will spoil something don't answer :D

The Gyro story took up a whole chapter itself in the manga. I won't spoil it but when it appears in the manga, it was a surprise to everyone. It was completely Out of the blue, WTF and genius at the same time...so no one thinks of it as filler. It was just...Togashi being Togashi. I personally LOVE it in the manga. It felt like we got a stand alone short story (where Togashi is really good at). There are a 2nd part of this story that is not in the anime yet. Id say the story is more like part of the ongoing themes Togashi wanted to explore in this arc, and setting up of something bigger of what might and might not happen in the future (again there's a second part of this story where its has a line that's very puzzling and readers are still scratching their head about it.)

Damn a giant ant picks up a 9MM shoots and underaged girl in the head then eats her. The type of shit that goes down in this anime is unheard of.

It's a bit much, but not enough for me to cry over.
That ant soldier's face when he killed her. Priceless.

I still can't believe this airs early Saturday mornings.

This episode: Abuse. Negligence. Patricide. Horrible killings. A young girl getting eaten by a monster.
Hunter x Hunter: A show for children! ^__^

That aside, the Gyro flashback came out of nowhere. It felt very unorthodox, but somehow still worked.
Poor Ponzu. Did you see Gon's face at the end? Oh boy, we all know that you should never piss him off.

Being shock is not the same as hating and complaining about the episode.
Have it not occur to you that people calling this episode very brutal is a compliment?
Honestly, I don't see one post complaining in this thread.

Man....
I am seriously shocked by this episode.
I havent read the manga (purposely been avoiding it), so I didnt see this coming, even though people have on this forum have been advocating this arc to be very violent.

When I saw they introduced the 'old' character including Ponzu I expected them to have some impact on the storyline, and not to be chimera fodder and food.

Even though I have seen some pretty grim anime's, this still shocked me, especially how easily Ponzu got disposed off.

Nonetheless amazing episode 10/10!!!!

Can't wait for next week, even more so than normal for HxH, and that says something

That was a powerful back story for Gyro. How he was being used and his dad didn't care about him.

I can' believe Ponzu died. I wasn't expecting it so soon. Then she got eaten after multiple shot. Even if it was censored it was disturbing nonetheless. Polke admirable fending off the Ants but now he is Chimera food TwT

Damn the Ants are gonna learn about Nen.

Gon, KIllua and Kaito will fight some Chimera Ants next time.

This episode was so depressing. ;_; It was just too sad.
Seeing Ponzu die... reminded me of Attack on Titan for a second. It's like, PEOPLE DON'T DIE IN HUNTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hunter is too happy for that :'( Gon and Killua are supposed to save everyone~~!

Also, the back story for that guy Gyro or whatever confused me. We know nothing about him, literally, and they give us this long (however, well-done) back story, and we find out he died immediately after. So it feels pointless to me right now. Hopefully they will tie it in somehow or Gyro will become important sometime later.

And I really really liked Ponzu. After the Hunter Exam, I was super excited to see her again. I thought her bees were really cool, and I wanted her to join Gon and Killua somehow again. But she had to die. :/ It made me really sad, especially because some stupid ant shot her to death. Waiting for Gon to wreak revenge on those stupid ants.

But lol, this episode was all right to me. I really didn't like it as much as some of the last few. I feel like they're dragging the set up for Gon and Killua too long. I'm hoping for some real action the next episode. Also, it's so dark and depressing! I just want Gon to save the day and smash that stupid chimera ant queen. :(

Surprisingly, for once I didn't thoroughly enjoy a Hunter episode. I hope next week will make up for it!!

Pretty nice adaptation. I have to say Ponzu's scene felt more brutal than the manga, he shot her so many times here.. Although I don't know why they bring up Jairo so soon..

I'm amazed how many people actually give a damn about Ponzu dying lmfao. She's showed up all of 3 times and only one of those was important (kinda, in the Hunter Exam she was one of the main notable applicants).

There is something beautiful about ants killing humans that I can happily say this episode was fucked up and bonerific.lol poor pokkle...and those other 3 I guess. Actually the first time I watched Ponzu die it was pretty disturbing but then the other times I watch it I couldnt stop laughing because I just can't take Ponzu so seriously with that stupid hat on. lol ponzu. Stay dead :)

My hopes for more arrow colors down the drain :P

GREAT ep nonetheless, the Gyro flashback was deep but I felt like it came out of the blue. I hope this "Gyro" guy has a badass ant reincarnation.

And as for Ponzu's death, the eating of the kids is still more gory IMO. Regardless, they really have to move this to an evening slot

This episode was too good. I can't believe how well they handled Gyro's backstory and Ponzo's death; both were arguably depicted better than in the manga. Better yet, this is only the tip of the iceberg for what's about to come --- expect a shit ton of brutal deaths and gore.

To me it's not her death that was so disturbing, indeed I believe most people saw it coming and, yeah, she hadn't appeared in the series all that much. It was how the ant shot her over and over, the complete.....the complete disrespect of a person that was clearly already dead and how you could see her body spasm as he shot her that made me go "oh, damn". It's funny in most series I'd complain about a character who was barely in the show returning just to die like that. But, here I think it was so well done I really don't have much of a problem with it. In fact, I really don't have a problem with it at all.

Also, another great moment aside from the things I mentioned earlier, and I don't believe anyone has mentioned this, is when Gyro's flashback is over and the scene cuts to one of the ants, can't remember his name, staring at Gyro's now empty seat. I think it was just a very well done finishing touch to that great scene, a real sense of finality.

I believe that what "shocks" some people in this ep is that mildly developed good guys are killed by grunts. It is very different from Yorknew, where the most violent moments were badass Phantom Troupe vs boring Mafia fodder.

Anyway, great episode! Madhouse managed to censor the ep without lowering the intensity of what's going on.

Then I don't have great news for you. Hunter X Hunter will continue to be equally or even more brutal, both psychologically and physically deeper into the arc.

It's very entertaining reading some of these responses after such a dark and amazing episode. Specifically entertaining because I know what's coming: I suggest that people takes Kite's final line of the episode to heart.

There's too much to talk about from this episode for a forum post, so I'll say that pretty much from beginning to end I thought it was absolutely perfect, despite one hickup (the Gyro narrator didn't have to open with "he finally killed his father when he was 12" or whatever, I think that's a mistake but just me and my opinion lol).

These episodes lately are going much too quick as well. Like, I look down at the time now and see 3/4 of the way, thinking i'm like 2 minutes in.

The Ponzu 3pete drag and munch was particularly hard hitting, but my favourite moment of the ep was that guide's face watching da boys take off. It just seemed so well placed. Gyro shall be interesting as well, what a great visual character concept.

That is all

Ponzu's death was perfect. That's the 'oh shit' moment Togashi was looking for in my opinion. People better take this seriously now, because people WILL die.

Funny tho, because someone said that Togashi doesn't care for side characters, thereby implying that his main characters are safe.

Nobody is safe. Be prepared (and patient, it's a long arc to say the least :D)

Finally it gets some action... As for Ponzu I must say even though I knew she will die still it came as a shock, as I still belived that somehow Killu and Gon will save her and all will be happy ( as in the lion king where I still lie to myself that Mufa will stand up ;( ...that kind'a thing) But still the worst thing till now was when the kids where killed (eaten) that was like OH MY GOSH!!!

I like the fact that this show can kill some of its cast so nicely. It makes the whole more credible and gives extra atmosphere.
Also, damn, so many spoilers in the episode discussion...

OMG. The manga readers were right when they said this arc is scary. And they even killed that girl? Didn't see that coming..
Oh and that Gyro guy's backstory was great.

Everyone seems really upset about Ponzo's death. Me, personally, was sorta surprised to see her appear after being gone for so many arcs and then die so quickly. I wasnt too surprised by the slight sub-genre/atmosphere shift in the story as I read the manga and it's not as apparent and also that's kinda just how Togashi does things. He likes to experiment throughout a series. For anyone who's seen/watched YYH (Yu Yu Hakusho), his other "shounen" you know as it progresses it shifts moods/feels/atmospheres. the last arc is definitely different, but even the beginning of the series is more slice of life-ish.
I thought HxH was geared towards a younger audience when I first heard about it but it becomes apparent that's not entirely true. Or true at all, really. Some manga/anime shounen's are the opposite for me, I start watching it and it feels its geared towards a younger audience. this was the opposite. Though the Hunter Exam felt a bit more light-hearted. Cant ignore the killing and Hisoka's sex puns though.

I dont understand why Madhouse is making all these slight alterations with the timeframe of the story. It's not like they need filler either with the long length of this arc. So far, they've done great with all the little additions and switches in the storyline. I guess Im just bracing myself somewhat, because it normally never turns out well, but Madhouse was doing very well at staying canonically correct up til now (which I thought was the point of MH redoing the series, anyway) so I guess Im just kinda wondering why they decided to start making more changes at the beginning of this arc. Guess the Kaito flashback thing just was the jump start for Madhouse to start making more liberations on their part.

@dextronaut

Demo demo they've been trimming, rearranging, and even adding things since the beginning of the series : O

This isn't like the first FMA where the story completely diverges, I don't know any manga adaption or any adaption(tv,books, movies) for the matter that's followed things EXACTLY like it's source to the letter. They've been generally respectful with characters and plot development so I've been satisfied with what Madhouse has been doing even Kite and the Chimera Ants. There's an endgame in sight the studio is working towards and we're one arc away after the current one : )

They aren't adding "filler" to pad time like other long running battle shonen but it is a consequence. From my perspective, it seems Madhouse is trying to make an entertaining ANIME first and foremost. The Chimera Ant arc has always been an exploration of what it means to be human and the extra scenes really mesh well into that theme especially Colt. His character arc so far has been better structured and more defined than the manga. As a result his payoff later is going to be all the more satisfying because of it.

All of the things Madhouse has been fleshing out/laying extra groundwork of are going to enhance plot points down the line, near and distant. Without spoiling anime only viewers, I'll just say keep Gyro's guards at the beginning of the episode in the back of your mind as an example.
