If you live in a traffic congested city, why do you buy manual transmission?

I still don't understand why there are people who buy manual transmission. if you live in a heavily congested city like toronto or vancouver, what's the point of manual transmission?

Is it just personal preference, for example, I tried it for a while on my bro's car... I didn't want a manual car, I just wanted to learn in case a situation arises that I need to use a manual car.
It is annoying (I live just outside the downtown core). But I can't imagine it being that bad if i decided to own a manual car... You'll get used to it.

I've gotten used to manual door locks, windows, and no a/c for a while now.
You'd be surprised at how annoying it could get locking the doors and windows after everyone. Everyone is used to power locks now.

Most people buy manuals, because the car is either unavailable otherwise, the car is an older model and had a manual transmission by default, or because the manual trim model for the car with manual is cheaper (generally $1000-$2000 cheaper).
Very few people these days actually get manual because it's a preference. For the people that do, there is semi-automatic, paddleshifters, and clutchless manuals.

Because it accelerates faster.
Because it gives you more control over the car.
Because manual transmission is cheaper.
Because we know how to drive.

Control is the main reason but I choose it for the enjoyment.

There are other good reasons, although in the end it just boils down to personal preference. They are about equally easy to drive -- after a few years driving manual is pretty automatic. You do feel more connected to the car and driving experience (not vastly so, but there is a difference). Manuals are cheaper to buy, cheaper and easier to repair and purportedly are stolen less often than automatics. Less importantly, many care enthusiasts are also more impressed by manual than automatic.

In the end, differences are relatively minor compared to other features of the car.

First learned to drive in a manual, there's more room for technical skill and it's less boring.

I'm going to assume you're not from the UK, at least. Manual is the norm here.

If you regularly have to travel outside of that congested city.

Because being forced into bus schedules is balls. Plus, being able to travel where I want, when I want is super-duper.

agree with this cuz the point of cars is only if you live in a suburb (ie. not congested city)
manual trans has little to do with preference its easier to get i think

Having to deal with unexpected traffic jams may be worse. But the thing is, it isn't even unexpected, there's like traffic jams everyday in densely populated cities.

If the car battery dies you can pop the clutch to start it.

Because - although it is infinitely more annoying in traffic (Yes I'll give you that) - Manual Transmission is more fun to drive and gives the driver more control over the vehicle.

Ah it appears PirateKing has already spoken about all this.

Manuals are a lot more fun and can make even the lamest car car feel like a spots car. I had a 5 speed ford focus I bought to commute to work everyday with and I drove that thing like a rally car. Yeah the stop n go sucked but it was fun grabbin gears

What's the difference in auto insurance for AT vs MT?

>If you live in a congested city, why buy a car at all?
Example:
Need to drive through a congested area to reach another area.
Which it would takes 2 hrs+ if I take the mass transit
about 30min for driving

It is way cheaper than an automatic. Much moolah is needed to repair an automatic than a manual.

Seriously, I don't know how physically unfit you are to get tired of shifting gears. I 'm not even conscious about changing gears. Like reading subs, gear shifts are second nature to me.

WTF! I would be tired of the traffic but tired of changing gears? WTF. Seriously. What the heck is that? My head can't compute the physical unfitness that scenario seem to imply.WTH!

Is manual transmission supposed to be difficult to use in a congested city?

Personally I like it because it lowers the amount of people who are capable of driving my car.

Automatics...lol
How is driving a manual in busy traffic hard anyway? If it's really busy you wont even touch 3rd gear. They must be incredibly lazy.
Get a motorbike if you're concerned about traffic, my journey from work takes a car around 45 mins but I make it in 25 weaving straight through on my bike. + Gears are well fun taking on a sports car at traffic lights and cornering.
Automatics are for disabled/lazy/boring people imo. Even if you live in a busy place when you go for a drive in the countryside/ not a busy place etc you're not going to have any fun at all.

most people use cars merely for transportation, not to have fun in, a lot of young people cant understand that, like me at the moment lol (i enjoy going on cruises with car clubs). So its not a matter of being lazy...

I have a manual honda crv 2003

I love driving manual cars compared to automatics. Its just more fun, shifting gears and stuff you feel like you're actually "controlling" the car instead of just sort of guiding the car like you do with an ordinary automatic. Although once you get into 5th/6th gear , its pretty much the same as driving an auto at that point because you don't shift anymore until you have to slow down under 45 ish.

I do sorta agree with driving manual through congested environments. I don't think its fun if its crawling traffic and my foot is absolutely constantly on the clutch only going in 1st or 2nd gear.

Just about 99% of situations where I live anyway (medium sized city without traffic problems usually unless there's been a car accident or road work) don't even put me in that sort of situation where the roads get that congested with cars, thankfully. And I also use my car for long trips occasionally when I go visit family members or go on vacation. You really don't appreciate the glory of having your own vehicle and going wherever the fuck you want to on your own schedule, until you have to use public transportation for a year..

god the traffic in our area is just... damn. I just recently got my license and driving manual transmission is sure a challenge. Imagine only going for gear 1-2 for miles.

and btw manual transmission is a lot cheaper and I heard it gives you better control on your speed.

Cause you cant make those newer and faster automatics eat your dust if you are in a automatic yourself. Nothing beats the feeling of my 18 year old audi a4 beating those newer little shits at the stoplights cause I drive stick and they have automatic.

I've always driven Manual cars (Excluding HGV Lorries, I tend to drive the automatic 18ton ones although the 7 1/2 tons are manual) so it really doesn't bother me.
I prefer having a little more control over my car.
