Has anyone watched a sports anime and then got into the sport in REAL life?

For e.g. I started watching Hajime no Ippo, got hooked to it, then i gave real life boxing a go and now i'm an avid fan of it, whereas before it didn't interest me whatsoever.

So what about you?

Hm, can't say I have. I've never been a sports person in general, but I have had it happen the other way around. I always brushed off sports anime as something I just wouldn't be interested in, until I found baseball anime. I've always really enjoyed baseball for some reason, and when I watched the first season of Major, I finished it in two days because I didn't want to stop. It's so good, and I still would recommend it to anyone that hasn't watched it.

Maybe, someday, I'll become more open-minded and I might try out some of the really popular sports anime that I see others talking about a lot.

I play badminton for my region, not actually competitive though, only division 4 with 3 training days a week.

And there's no such thing as badminton anime.

After watching Cross Game, I actually got interested in baseball, which is exactly why there's a baseball mit and ball in my room now. Playing catch alone is so much fun. The sound that the mit makes when it when the ball made contact is just <3

I got a bit more interested in baseball after watching various baseball anime. Made me want to play, but I wouldn't, because I'm already 25 and I would suck at it terribly (I've never been a sporty person). I kind of want to go watch an actual game though.

I'm actually kind of the opposite. I liked boxing in real life before, so I gave Hajime no Ippo a shot. Whereas I'm not a big fan of basketball or baseball, so most anime centered around those two sports just aren't for me.

I had zero interest in baseball and had never played it. In fact, I dislike sports. I put off watching sport anime for so long, saying they 'just aren't for me'. However, one day I actually tried watching some of the highly rated baseball anime, and I fell in love with them. Moral of the story: Don't decide it's not for you until you try.

Now see, that's just it. I played and watched baseball for nine years. It wasn't like I never had an interest in the sport, it's just it simply lost it's value it once had to me and I don't appreciate it as I once did. And I have checked out a couple of baseball anime, and as I said, they just aren't for me.

Since I watch and play basketball and football (not handegg), I currently watch shows like Kuroko no Basket and Area no Kishi. The interest is already there before I watched. Even with Hajime no Ippo. I'm already watching boxing matches before I got to watch it.

Ah no, that'd be my fault. I'll admit it was years and years ago since I have given another one a try, maybe baseball anime are in line for a rematch. I think the one I gave a try to a long long time ago was Major S1 and eh..I don't think I even made it out of episode 2.

My bad too, I seem to expect everyone to add every little thing they've ever watched to their list since that's what I do. My dropped and on-hold lists are so long -_-'
Major is really good, though it does take a little while. I started being interested in it at episodes 4-5 (major story event). For a more lighthearted baseball anime, Big Windup is really entertaining :) That's the first baseball anime I tried.

Oh my, you weren't even exaggerating. Mine would probably be three times it's size if I sought out every little thing I've ever started and never finished it.
For me it seems, when anime has it's theme based around a single concept, in this case baseball, I find that I need to have at least a small interest in the subject matter to enjoy the story overall. I'd compare it to something like WWE. I don't see why I would watch WWE for their 'story', while having zero interest in the actual 'wrestling'. ( I do not watch WWE, by the way.) But I'll take you up on your recommendation and give Big Windup a spin.

I like to have a thorough list of everything. Makes me feel organised :)
I find I don't need to be interested in the subject matter (e.g. baseball) to enjoy the plot and character developments. Although, it so happens that I usually become interested in the subject matter after watching for a while.
I hope you like Big Windup. Please do let me know what you think when you get around to it~

I suppose that's just a way people differ in their watching habits. I'll let you know. I'll set a little mental reminder to get back at you when I make it a little bit into the series, or happen to complete it.

Yeah i also watched a lot of baseball anime even though i had never watched an actual game of baseball prior to this, i had the impression that baseball was a VERY boring spectators sport, so when i first watched major, i had my doubts, but that changed just after a few episodes, i got hooked straight away, i finished the anime as fast a i could, i couldn't get enough of it and sure enough it became one of my favourite anime ever (top 10 for sure, One Outs in my top 5).

However i haven't got into REAL life baseball, solely because baseball is practically unheard of in the UK (is where i'm from), that's how unpopular it is, so if i wanted to watch it, i'd have to watch it online or subscribe to some sports channel that features baseball and i know that isn't going to happen thats for sure.

Ehh, was never really into sports. But for some odd reason I've taken a liking to sports anime recently.

After watching Hikaru no Go I learned to play Go. One Outs showed me a different perspective on baseball, so I've come to appreciate the game a little more. And Eyeshield 21 might have possibly gotten me interested in football. Although I've given my husband and younger sister so much grief about it, I don't think I will be openly admitting it any time soon =D

For me, it's also been mostly the other way around. My interest in baseball, for example, has really allowed me to more fully enjoy series like Cross Game and One Outs.

But I did get really into Mahjong after watching Saki. But ack, trying to learn all those scoring rules..

Yes. Literally every sports anime I've ever seen has gotten me more into the sport. XD;; The only long-term effect though has been tennis, from Prince of Tennis, because it's quite hard to watch baseball or American football in the UK and I couldn't really be bothered ^^;; And as much as I want to play mahjong, it's bloody hard unless you try IRL, which is again difficult. ^^;;

Slam Dunk got me into playing basketball, made it to the national finals with my team but we didn't win though. Was a fun experience playing as PG for 3 years and having Ryota as reference to my position :) yeah Slam dunk was my motivation back then but I quit now, I just play for fun with my friends, not into getting serious in a team anymore.

PoT got me interested in playing tennis too, but mostly just for fun.

Hajime no Ippo got me interested in the MMA "culture" and I plan on training mma in the future.

blablabla animes arent real, etc they are exagerated etc, I don't care. I find my inspiration and motivation from anything I want as long as I can distinguish fantasy from reality.

Also, I got interested in Bboying, aka breakdancing because I've watched DBZ, HxH when I was a kid. I love the fact that you can "battle" with flashy moves, make your own move, be original and try to improve. That way, I found my passion in dancing :)

Slam Dunk - Made me play for 3 -4 Years playing basketball at break in school.
Major - Made me want to play the game, but only on the Itouch.
Bamboo Blade - Kendo but no where to participate so I self practice.

I've Played Rounders its fun, but watching baseball is kinda boring, in Major and cross games they skip the boring bits, and in major they add special effects to the pitches.

Eyeshield 21
Major
Prince of Tennis
Slam Dunk

Although I haven't tried any of the sports in these animes (Except for basketball), I would love to try them someday especially baseball because ever since I fell in love with Major, I fell in love with the sport as well.
