| I kinda like Ryuunosuke's dad, I feel anybody happy that their daughter is on a date with another girl can't be a bad person. I think a theme of Urusei Yatsura is a pessimistic view of gender relations. Can Ataru stop thinking about himself for even 5 seconds? I interpreted the use of "hentai" in this context to be a shorthand for "lesbian," especially when Ryuunosuke and Shinobu are talking to each other, but before reading the comments I didn't think about it just meaning "bra fetishist"... |
| Another episode that absolutely wouldn't fly today without some serious rewrites. I wonder if the Remake will attempt to readapt stories like this one. I like how this episode focuses almost entirely on Shinobu and Ryuu-chan. Ryuunosuke pretty much became a main character shortly after she was introduced to the story when you consider how many stories she got focused on her. It makes me think Rumiko Takahashi was toying with the idea of Ranma 1/2 while she was still writing Urusei Yatsura (and Maison Ikkoku). If she started drawing manga just a few years later Urusei Yatsura might've been about Ryuunosuke instead of Ataru and Lum and Ranma 1/2 might not even exist, which is almost scary to think about. |

| I saw this one in the remake first and it was great there but I think it’s clear this one is better, the remake cut out Ryuunosuke’s dad entirely and also didn’t have that crisp beginning bit, not to mention the Shinobu fanservice at the very end lol. Seeing this one fleshed out really made it for me, one of the best Ryuunosuke episodes and one of my favorite episodes of the series for sure. I also gotta mention how nice Shinobu’s date outfit was, she didn’t need to go that hard but she did lol. |
