THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Leaving, but Kaito wants to know why Luke changed so much. Friends suggested to leave him for a bit. Luke planing on "that forbidden" puzzle.

To Italy? Because POG controlled airplanes to Japan.

Cubic is same room as Kaito, and Gammon knew that the rider is POG person. The assistant is the giver this time. The no solution was solved by Kaito, who came.

The class rep. visiting Luke, and cannot believe Gammon didn't get on to the one to Japan. Chess vs. Luke to bet with Apple Juice... He lost, though.

Kaito challenging Luke. So Luke not liking the childhood friend girl is preventing Luke from the plan.

"Truth" is going to be revealed next ep.? With the president.

OK, that was unfair to Gammon. The worst case scenario, in fact.

Kaito continues to be a jerk. Not because he butted in on solving that Gusha puzzle, but because he's still being an egotist and can't decide on his priorities. It's like he only makes sure his friends are physically OK and doesn't give a rat's ass about how they feel. In fact, he continues tramping all over their feelings. Oh, they're alive - check, and that's where his care for them stops.

Cubic is still depressed, uncertain about his own value and is afraid he's not good enough to be Kaito's friend. And now we also have Gammon who suffered quite a blow to his pride. Goddammit, Kaito, you seriously need to start doing some damage control there. But instead he failed to use a perfectly good time to at least ask Q-chan what's bugging him, to reassure him and maybe give him a little pep talk. And in this ep, once Kaito came to, first thing he should've done was to go talk to Gammon, to hint in any roundabout and indirect way he could come up with that he butted in not because he has a goal to steal every damn puzzle out there from Gammon just to show his superiority, but because he was concerned about Gammon's safety. It's not like it's beyond Kaito's ability to do that - after all, he was able to make a compromise with his pride to thank Gammon for helping him to break out of the post-BSOD depression. It's just that he doesn't even seem to realize that he's not the only one who has feelings, that other people have them as well, and these feelings tend to get hurt if not treated with care. I'm sure if Kaito just tried to convey to Gammon his concern for him, no matter how messy, clumsy and awkward that attempt would turn out to be, it would significantly soften that harsh blow to Gammon's pride, since those two do seem to get along pretty well. After all, Gammon has already given up a significant chunk of his pride just to hang around with Kaito, now it's clearly Kaito's turn, dammit.

Right now, it's like Kaito's frozen somewhere between the past and the present - he's not completely stuck on Rook anymore, but not completely cares about his present friends either - and that half-assed devotion to his current buddies just doesn't cut it, it might destroy his connection with them. And if I was OK with Kaito before, even liked him a little, I'm starting to get seriously annoyed with him now.

Pretty enjoyable episode. I liked the puzzle for Gammon (stardust-kun). Surprise entry by Kaito was great especially since he is back to solving puzzles. It was pretty epic.

Jikugawa in some action was nice, he definitely needs to continue being around, and his precious apple juice.

Started to feel bad for both Rook and Gammon. Rook seems to be jealous or envious of the relationships and friendships Kaito has and especially when he got angry at Nonoha in the scene after she woke Kaito up. I hope reconciliation is possible. Gammon just needs a time to shine, but with POG, doesnt seem possible with impossible puzzles

I think it's a misunderstood. He wanted to help his friend, Kaito doesn't want to lose anyone. So, yes it looks arrogant but he just helped his friend, though it wasn't the best for Gyamon at least he didn't die, but Gyamon has too much pride himself so neither Kaito nor him can really see how much er... damage? are making to each other.

This show just keeps getting better and better.

The lack of filler is the best part unlike so many shows out there. We get development between Kaito's slight depression, Kaito going back more towards his old self (post England childhood days), Gammon being Gammon, Rook still trying to wrap his mind around as to why Kaito is the way he is (although, the brainwash program within him must be impeding in this guy's head), Rook vs. Jikugawa chess match with apple juice at stake (ha), and finally, the PV clip for next episode now tackles the headmaster.

The puzzle, itself.. Aghh.. I almost forgot Venice gets high-tide thanks to the moon. Hmph..

Rook's eyes are interesting. With the 'whites" in his eyes, his old self is definitely in there. We just need to see more white, out of white (hair + clothing). When they were playing the chess game, I was imagining Jikugawa taking a rook chess piece and dropping it to the floor to mirror the OP. :D

Oh yeah, and the ending scene... Haha...

And I like Kaito the way he is, because I can see that he is "changing". Slowly, but it's there. He doesn't show his concern that easily like helping a teammate out of the canal, but hey.. Kaito is still recovering from the whole Rook ordeal sort of like a trauma victim getting over a shock. However, when he hears of someone being stuck in a deadly puzzle, he gets REALLY concerned. He does care without saying it directly. It's his actions that prove his worth. That's the type of hero he is.

I can't expect him to ask all the people he saved, "Anata wa daijoubu desu ka?" We all know they're ok in the end. ^_^

Kaito's still developing as we're only at the 16th episode. Eventually, he's going to balance Rook and all his other friends in the near future. (And Rook definitely needs some serious psychological rescue.... =,=;; It's a good thing POG didn't train him to fight with guns...)

btw is c3 even a satisfactory opening move for black against e4? i swear noone plays it

Are you sure that you don't mean 1.e4, c6? ...c3 is a little deep for black to reach on an opening move. If it is ...c6, that is the beginning of the Caro-Kann defence. I didn't follow the moves closely but the later positions at a glance looked like they could be a variant. Of course ...c5 and the Sicilian defence is a more common (and probably more successful) response. (boy, it's been a long time since I thought about chess openings in any detail...)

And yes, even the student council president is a more likeable character now. But my favourites are still Nonoha and Anna (is she really a trap?).

Wow, another unfair puzzle. Didn't get Muller fired by Rook because he did that all the time? Nice going, hypocritical puffhead!

And why didn't Gammon say ANYTHING, even though he noticed that Souji at the airport was a fake? Makes no sense at all.

But I can feel his hate for Kaito. He should kill him and become the main character, with Anna as his female lead. :x

btw, maybe it's just my imagination, but the animation seems to have been even worse time.

Meh episode.

Completely agree...!

I love this episode after all, so I was surprised when I look this thread and see Kaito-hater.

So it wasn't a 2d puzzle, but also 3d.

The solver would be too focused on how to solve the puzzle on the screen, not noticing that the high tide is also a factor to solve it.

It is really unfair for Gammon when he's already getting ahead then suddenly Kaito butt in in order to piss Luke so that he can have a piece of him.

Really, Kaito has a huge pride aginst Luke.

Btw, I hate both their hairstyle.

Im more interested in Kaitos and Rooks past than the puzzles. I think the past 3 eps are just fillers.

Now, why would Gammon want any of his friends to be involved? He stayed silent so they wouldn't know. >_>

To me, I don't feel it that way... Unless, it's an episode that focuses solely on the puzzle itself without any Rook appearance. To me, a filler would be a POG announcing a puzzle, someone solves it, nothing else shown from the POG side, and so, the end of the episode. (Which is the equivalent of a bunch of brainless shounen chapters of people fighting each other and that's it. No progress in the main plot whatsoever.)

He didn't want them to be involved? ESPECIALLY THEN he should've said something.
He let everyone fly on a plane that P.O.G. arranged. What if they had a puzzle up in mid-air? If they fail, it would crash. And seeing as unfair as it got, they might have just planted a bomb on it.

Yeah, great thinking.

And I liked Muller! Now that you mentioned it, they say it's the "forbidden" puzzle so we might get to see more forbidden puzzles like that. Yet I guess because it's an original puzzle which wasn't manipulated it just has no answer.

Seriously YES Rook is hypocrite, psycho and obsessive with Kaito. He is the same level as Kaito, both are ridiculous. And I wonder if anyone noticed, that POG man with makeup and lipstick is voiced by Kishow.

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Qd3 dxe4 5.Nxe4 e5 6.dxe5 Qa5+ 7.Bd2 Qxe5 8.0-0-0 Nxe4 9.Qd8+ Kxd8 10.Bg5+ and mate in next move.

4.Qd3 looks weird, don't know if it's a theoritical line.

Tactic at the end simple but nice:)

It is the first time I saw realistic game of chess in anime. :D

Yeahhhh Gammon's puzzle time!... except Kaito kinda stole the spotlight there. Guess they had to make sure we know.that Kaito is the best lol.

Chess match between Jikugawa and Rook... So Jikugawa is on Kaito's side, right? But he also wants to awaken the Phi Brain??

Using Nonoha sweets to wake up Kaito never gets old! XD
