How exactly is that sad? 82 people voted for Two or more of the above.

Easily answered. A lot of people don't like streaming so that could mean they are talking about options 1 and options 2 or options 1 and 4 or any other combo. It also says two or MORE. So that could mean they are doing everything but streaming. Maybe they stream and don't buy manga. It can be any combination.

Oddly enough, merchandise is the only thing they sell in my country. They do sell old manga for an insane amount of money.
I am waiting for stuff to buy :( Specially DVDS/BRs.

Well while I do own my favorite series I have 4 tera byes and I would say that 3/4 of it is anime. I also have alot of manga on my hardrive so while I do buy things like figurines I cant say I really support the anime industry.

I used to go crazy on spending: Bought over 500 R1 anime dvds, purchased tons of resin figures, etc over the years. Lately however I've found myself starting to sell off some of my collection both to make room and because I know some of it I will never watch/have a use for again.

However I will always spend money on NGE merchandise, since that's been my favorite anime since *.RM was a viable fansub format (yea, I've been watching anime for THAT long, lol).

I do buy manga volumes, there's tons of others that i wanted to buy but they didn't translate to sell in my country. So i'm planning to buy english mangas in the end of the year through internet. 8D

It all depends on what you define as "supporting the industry".

If you mean purchasing legal DVDs and manga so that the creators can invest more time and effort into making quality entertainment then that's one thing.

If, however, you mean that we should buy said merchandise at a massively marked up price because the sub-distributors here in the UK must pay an exorbitant fee to the American distributors, who in turn must pay a hugely inflated license fee handed to them by the Japanese studios and distributors who have increased the price to make up for the shortfall in their income due to their insistence on producing shit that only caters to a minority market (in other words, all the "soft porn" anime and manga we've been seeing lately), and is only marginally profitable through merchandising rather than sales of DVDs and manga - then that's a different story.

The answer's never as simple as you think.

Oh, and for all the people who don't like fansubs/scanlations, you do realise the implications of second hand purchases don't you?

Maybe that poll should include an option for second hand purchases, and I wouldn't call people cheapskates, especially during a global recession.
What a day! What a lovely Day!

I think paying $60 for a 12 episode "box set" is a little ridiculous, especially if you have no idea what it's really about and if you'll like it. That said, i'd buy my favorite series' for the right price, if i had the extra money.

I'm not really well off but I try to buy what I can, seeing as anime's a huge niche in the UK and I figure distributors will actually appreciate it (plus it means more series will actually make it overseas if there's actual profit for the company). I normally stream series and buy the DVDs later on...kinda like watching a TV series and then buying the boxset, only illegal.

For series that will never make it outside Japan, I tend to buy mercendise online.

All of the above.

I love Funimation's newer S.A.V.E. box sets.
I won't spend 60 dollars for a box set but 25 dollars is not too much.
They are coming out with the box set for the first season of Xxxholic which is great because I've always meant to buy that series.

It's all about what you can afford. When I was a teenager I would read manga online and watch anime but never buy anything.
Now that I have two jobs, I'm able to buy manga, anime, figures, wall scrolls, etc.

I do buy staff but not many. I guess i contribute but very little. The reason is simple. If i go out to buy manga or anime, i will find only 2-3 manga titles and the Dragonball anime. So i have to order from Japan, US to get anything, ending up paying even more.
I'm no rich guy so i can't afford too much spending, so in the end i only buy few selected things i absolutely love.

Less people are ADMITTING it.

As for me: I buy manga volumes. I don't buy R1 DVD, because I think they are worthless. I buy R2 blurays, because they are fucking beautiful, and come with need (unreadable) extras. And they even started adding English subs to them.

I only have a few dvd boxsets and bunch of Mai Hime/Otome figures(cheap lot on ebay). I watch most of my anime illegally although with my new part time job I plan on getting anime box sets/merchandise for stuff I either really like or know won't disappoint. I don't do not so much support as much as I like having a collection, that stuff is fun for me.

Up until recently, I just watched all my anime online and never bought the DVD's. I'm at least attempting to support the industry now. But so far I've only bought Higurashi on DVD and a few chapters of manga. Sadly, I'm one of those people who takes complete advantage of whatever FUNimation puts on YouTube. Totally downloaded FMA:B and parts of a few others.

When I was younger, I bought all series of Kindaichi including the latest on-going shin series. About 20 volumes of Slam Dunk, 50 volumes of One Piece, 14 volume of Love Hina etc etc. I think I spent about 1~2k US dollar on manga and manga only.

I don't buy anymore and all of my manga are collecting dust atm. I'll probably order new ones to replace them and seal them up, if and only if I'm able to :/

I buy a lot of manga and merchandise like figures, posters, CDs, etc. I rarely buy DVDs though.

To the people who use the excuse of not having stores that sell anime related stuff close by to them for not buying anything, haven't you heard of the internet? I've bought nearly everything online because there aren't many shops very close to me that sell it and plus I find it's often actually cheaper buying manga and figures from US/Japanese online stores than from shops here in Australia.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you have to buy anime related goods. It can be an expensive hobby and some people really don't have the money for it. I'm just saying that it's not a very good excuse to use. Just say you can't afford it / don't want to buy it. :\
