Against our hopes the next Higurashi series will be only an OVA called "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei"
The OVA is based on the fangame wich has the same name released back in december 2006.
The info comes from the June issue of Megami Magazine.

Awww...these are bad news but an OVA isn't necessarily bad since the producers have less restrictions. Well, better than nothing a cancellation would be much worse :/

To be honest, the material already seemed to be rather stretched thin towards the end of the second season. I look forward to a solid OVA over another season that could have ended up with pacing problems.

Well, I thought the idea of a third season wasn't that good in the first place, since the second had a pretty definite ending, but after getting used to it, I'm disappointed to see that it turned out to be just an OVA.

Indeed, the story was pretty much finished after the first season, GGod knows what sort of story it might have been when they'd have to think up another season...

I'm actually quite relieved it's only an OVA

Ouch! Since I'm much more anticipated in seeing this. I thought that it will be a series like just 12-13 episodes; but if this is just going to be an OVA, I hope it won't be just 1episode OVA. ^^

I would also wish that they produce the TRUE END, rather than the HAPPY END in the 2nd season.

Exactly. Looks like only Overfunk and 8Guage realise that having a third season would only be a disaster with the amount of material left. The Rei arc is 2 months after the HAPPY End, so I look forward to a solid Higurashi OVA.

mm.. I don't know if you guys have noticed, but there's really not much left to animate now that it has a pretty closed ending. What would the new season be? "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: The Adventures of Rika-chama in Hinamizawa!"?

I was expecting a shorter series (about one cours.) that would probably go into the past and background of Hanyuu, but this is fine too.
I'm not looking forward to the wait time though. : (

Eh, I'm kind of indifferent about this, I was really hoping for a new full-length series but was wondering how they would be able to pull out the material for it. I guess this is better than nothing though. Who knows? Maybe they'll decide to animate Umineko no Naku Koro ni some day

This is probably for the best, another season would have been too confusing since pretty much everything has been answered now.
A fun, fast, OVA is most likely a better choice.

I agree. Since the 2nd season wasn't as good as the first one (happens almost everytime), the 3rd wouldn't be creepy at all thus it would prabobly suck big time. An OVA should be just fine

How is this disappointing? The core story is over. All that's left is side stories... unless they wanna do like a Fumoffu thing... which I would so be in favor of...

Yup! You are right! Although I hoped to see another story with Rika as an adult. But i guess that won't happen...I can still hope,I guess.

Don't talk to me about character development if Kaizuka Inaho or Slaine Troyard are in your favorites.

Yeah, I'm quite glad about this.

Plus, OVA's have less restrictions than TV shows have.

I figured this would be the case. Unless they wanted to make it a 'Fumoffu' type of series, there's really only the Rei fandisc left. Since the chapter is short (as short as Himatsubushi, give or take), there should be enough space to suffeciently cover the events.
