Do you ever feel guilty for watching anime if you're not making enough money as an adult?

Turned 23 last week. I'm not really where I want to be at life financially. Back when I was 18-21 I had no problem setting anime goals for my self and executing on my watch list, I was doing well financially for my age and I was still considered to ''have time''. I didn't see ANY issue with cracking out 5-10 episodes a day. I genuinely looked foward to watching anime everyday and could afford to take my foot off the gas.

But now? I refuse to allow my self to binge watch, or even become anime-focused, I must be productive at all times and worry about my future. I often see the same issue with gamers, when you see those memes of 'gaming as an adult' with the underlying message being ''you shouldn't be gaming, you should be making money'' thats exactly how I feel when watching anime now.

I do have a job, but the pay is very low, and my search for a better job is feels so futile. ''Thanks for your application. Unfortunately...''

I wanna be able to enjoy my hobbies again, guilt free, but maybe im looking at this the wrong way, maybe i still deserve to do that, i dont know, its hard to break out of this mindset though

Watching anime was fun back then because I had ambition, drive and purpose, in other words, balance, but now that balance is gone.

I'm a recluse with no job. I don't feel guilty for watching anime but I feel sad and disgusted by myself that I'm weak-willed and very anxious. I avoid thinking "I could do X instead of Y", because I know I simply wouldn't do it (I don't feel like I'm ready yet; I would do it otherwise).

So, in my case thoughts are more about estimating my weakness, comparing myself to others etc rather than thinking about my current activity.

Anime has never gotten in the way of me making money. Anime consumption itself costs nothing to me, and I can afford the things related to anime I do spend money on. It's not like watching less anime will make you more money. Just work as much as you can in the field that makes you the most money that you can get and don't worry about how you choose to relax.

I don't fully understand what you mean. What kind of productivity are you talking about? If you have a job with fixed working hours and earnings, then there is no such thing. And how does the anime you watch in your free time affect it?

It's a completely different thing if you didn't work because you were addicted to anime, but according to your text, that's not the case.

No....but only because my job IS related to watching anime. xD

I have to see what titles are hot, make merchandise, and sell it. Lol
I ship whoever I want, whenever I want and if you complain, I'm shipping them harder. :)

@Stanis150 Read it again. I couldnt have explained my self any more simply. Specifically where I said my pay is very low, which goes back to the discussion title, of me not making enough money as an adult.

I do not care about money, as it is not real, but anime/manga is more important than anything in my life. It does not matter about how much money I make at the end of the day once I'm gone, it's gone. So no guilt.
I am a Completionist.

All Anime/Manga will be watched/read. All FILLERS will be enjoyed :)

@_ohara These are probably some cultural features of the American mentality, but I honestly don't understand what the size of your salary has to do with how you spend your free time?

If you weren't watching anime, but were, for example, riding a bike or playing the guitar, would there be any difference?

It's a smart move to prioritize your career over anime, but all things in moderation. Doing things you enjoy is just as much a part of life as making a living so you can feed yourself. If you like watching shows and you have time off, enjoy yourself!

Also, there are free methods of watching anime js

I don't know about Anime Forum as a place for career advice, but if I could say, IF you actually are finding opportunities to make money and there are actual opportunities right now to do that, then do it. If you get your career set early, you won't have to struggle into your 30s.
But if you are working some shit job and don't know what to do next, I really don't understand denying yourself anime.

If you just mean that it's hard to find time to watch anime after working 40 hrs a week due to exhaustion, then yes, welcome to adulthood.

@AllAlone8 But money is real though? To deny its existence is kinda wild. If money is such a throw away issue, you wouldnt even have a roof over your head, food, clothes, and a device to watch anime, and companies wouldnt be able to produce anime either without money. Money is everything. Accept the harsh reality, embrace it.

that's a rough spot to be in for sure, but it looks like you have some goals now right?

you wanna hit 5 figures, you wanna drive, things like that. Use it as incentive to keep improving yourself. Get on those free courses from MIT or Google or whatever and start building out your skillset. My advice is to start a Github account and just start building stuff. Doesn't matter if it's things from youtube tutorials or whatever.

Keep building. Keep improving. Include a link to your github in your resume when you apply to positions and people will start to see your journey. Honestly it's more valuable than a degree. If getting into the tech world isn't your thing, apply that same strategy to whatever career you want to start making. Learn, create, record it all, and look for paid internships/apprenticeships and you'll do fine. Lastly, force yourself to be optimistic. Times are tough right now, but if you don't believe in yourself, nothing that anybody says will help you more than you can.

You got this.

Having less free time is one of the things that happens when you grow up, but try to balance things out. Yeah, you don't need to binge for 10 episodes in a day, but you don't need to give up completely on your hobbies. Yes, money is important but taking care of yourself and doing things you enjoy are equally important.

Ask relatives, friends or people you know in general if they can help you. The relationships and connections can open you a lot of doors.

@HughMungis Yeah, I honestly just wanna earn enough money to support my life style, I dont want my own family in the future or anything, I just wanna live my life the way I want to, that being, making the most out of my fitness-anime-travelling/exploring-youtube video making life style

I just wanna be okay. I wanna be comfortable financially. Even if I have to work a 9-5, thats fine with me, i'd be so happy to land a regular 9-5 at this rate

At the very least, I am still earning money though, even if only a little, Im saving up as much as that as I can.

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely keep it in mind!

I feel this. I'm hunting for another job atm (it's rough), but honestly I've figured, I may as well just enjoy my spare time instead of brooding about feeling behind, etc. In fact, I've began to use anime and other hobbies to my advantage.
For instance, I really struggle to get up in the morning, so I have this rule that I can only watch a specific anime before a certain time. (So basically, I start the day with a helthy dose of battle shounen. And once I'm done with the current series, I could switch to a long-running magical girl anime next.)

I've also started this thing where I reward myself with a binge night if I hit a milestone.

It's probably right to consider monitoring your anime intake to an extent, but if you over-do it it can get really unhealthy. I think a better question is, what are your other hobbies? Are you working on skills, and is so much of your time dedicated to anime that you don't return to them? Society seems to bleat about "wasting your life" on things like anime and gaming (and even reading novels at this point - that time will come, if it hasn't already), but that's such a toxic mindset. (Not to mention it's really disrespectful to the devs, writers, artists, etc.) Things like that can be a great motivation for "more productive" things, but it doesn't have to be JUST that either.

Here's how I see it. If you're seriously trying to find a job with better pay, then I don't think it's necessary to feel guilty watching anime instead of making more money. Taking a breather every now and then is just as important as working. It's not like you're spending your working hours watching anime right? Unless that's the case, I think you have nothing to worry about.

I earn money so that I can do things that I enjoy. Watching anime is one of the most enjoyable things in my life. As long as I can pay for my basic needs (food, shelter, reliable transportation) & my anime subscriptions, I am content.

Nah as it's entertainment and a hobby. I watched that shit when I was making too little money. I'm watching now when I'm making a decent amount. No feelings of guilt as that's kinda retarded to have over anime and finances

...no? Everyone deserves to have some time to relax each day regardless of how much money they make. No reason to feel guilty about it .

Get a girl/boyfriend. Aside from the sex (which is a Good Thing™), it gives you something outside of yourself to focus on and support/encouragement/nagging for when you're flagging. And you might even end up with two incomes. If you're sharing the overheads that makes a big difference and that in turn can make you feel like you're getting somewhere.

23 is still very, very young. I didn't really hit my stride until I was somewhere around 35-40, so don't panic just yet.

I’m not sure. Even if I end up unemployed in the future, I wouldn’t blame myself. I don’t think you need to worry too much about it.
