Well, Ruri might not always look like it but she worked hard this episode. She's also surprisingly attentive to details.

I was kinda surprised she has a sapphire book but that's how much she loves her work.

Sapphire hunt continues. It's always exciting to see what the girls will find next.

Ruri's love for mineralogy is getting bigger and bigger. It's fun to see her being so fascinated all the time.

That was an amazing ep !!

Ruri has grown so much. Initially, she never cared about anything other than finding precious gems.
But looking at her taking notes, doing research, her maturity to accept her mistakes..Nagi's character has really rubbed off on Ruri.
Ruri's already an young Geologist now 💖

That's quite the sizeable sapphire deposit! I wonder if it's commercially viable, and in that case, whether Ruri can profit of that?

I’ve decided to name Sunday “Nagi-san Day”! I downloaded the episode two and a half hours ago, can you believe it? But my mom was calling me, so I went to help her! Mothers are the light of our eyes! If you have a mother, don’t hesitate to please her and kiss her hands and forehead as a sign of respect.

Anyway! At first, I was going to judge this episode as being lower in quality than previous ones… because in the first part, we didn’t see much of Giogia — instead, there was a lot of history and so on.

But the second half of the episode was amazing! Truly amazing! I couldn’t hold myself back and took so many screenshots! Personally, I really loved this part! The blue sapphire finally appeared, and with episode 6, it’s clear that episode 7 will mark the start of a new and different arc! We’re halfway through the anime now, and I can say I’m the happiest person watching it!

See you next week! As for the project, episode 6 will be added soon — please read episode 5! I wrote it with love!

Those were some big blue sapphires. And looked quite gem worthy, if I were them I'd convert them into gems for money. But then, I don't know Japanese laws on these things.

Yet again, another amazing episode.

Ruri just keeps becoming a better and better character each time an episode goes by. Shes always so cheerful and so passionate about finding what she wants which is something I love about her. She went from just fooling around to doing actual research, she really is growing fast. Loved this episode so much. :)

“The world of rocks is full of wonder, I could never get bored of it.” We’ve come so far with Ruri being the reason they were able to find the sapphire this time. She’s really become a full fledged member of this team making her own important contributions and helping out Nagi and Imari when they’re stumped!

Our girl went from not knowing the basics of mineralogy to mapping out possible deposit locations and saving the day.The teacher has become the student as they say 😂 The way Nagi looks at her like a proud older sister as she corrected her mineral notes was so sweet. Their relationship has been one of my fave parts of this entire anime season.

Sapphire is one of my favourite gemstones so I would absolutely love to go hunting for some! I really like how they used this as an opportunity to connect the past with the present and show how our understanding of the world has evolved over time. What humanity used to chalk up as supernatural events actually often had scientific explanations. Who knows how much more we’ll learn about the world and universe in another 500 years. Beautiful episode as per

Another episode of really cool rocks.

Ruri is experiencing a lot of stuffs, mistakes are also part of the process, what matters is how you'll learn from it. Everything that she did has finally paid off and they finally found the sapphires they were looking for.
Ruri is getting even more invested in all of this!

It's cool how it tied up to the myths of dragons, the difference of knowledge from the old era and the current really shows how far humans have come in understanding the world.
The Sapphires are Dragon Bones (or the Dragon itself) huh, really cool.

I was wrong as usual. Those were some Olympus SZ microscopes. Over $400 if it is something like an SZ-61 (and that's just for the optics, second-hand). Fancy. With tools like that, who wouldn't be interested in researching minerals (or any other tiny thing)?

Yeah, we know what they did there (just like the meme, looking up to something massive... Or perhaps not). But as usual, it plays perfectly in what came next: Ruri, after finding out she messed up, redeems herself by finding what they were looking for

The most beautiful dragon bones in nature: Sapphire. And a reminder not to ignore old folk, since it can mean something different in another era.

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

@LaczPro19 In China, dragon bones were usually fossils. Not always, but usually. Often dinosaur bones.

@Sheol01 in my country, Venezuela, most of those bones became oil. We did get some good fossils too, but the stories about them didn't have anything to do with dragons, unfortunately. But still, crazy, right? The culture around things in nature and the explanations in those times people gave are very interesting. And that happens everywhere

This episode in particular is such an accurate snapshot of what research is really like. Moreover, the process thus far hasn't really been sugarcoated either and has been explored in some significant detail, which is pretty awesome to see! Thanks so much to everyone involved in making this - I think this episode could be one of my favourites of the series - and, indeed, the season, thus far.

Two questions:
  1. Likely how much time has passed since that boulder fell? It can't be thousands of years, since the broken trees are still there, right?
  2. In every episode so far, you could say that they would never get rich with their findings since, even not taking "purity into account", the amount of money they could've earned compared to the amount of effort it took made it no more interesting than working at a konbini. But now? That's a pretty hefty "finder's fee" for that amount of sapphire.

Ruri's diligence paid off and the search for sapphire was a success. I liked the bit about how myths and legends can give clues to the past. As fantastical as some tales sound they often have a small bit of truth too them no matter how much time has obscured it.

edit: not sure how commercially viable the site is though. It looked like that crystals they found were flawed so it might be difficult to cut any gems of from them. But I think the site might become protected because of it's historical merit.

I can think of a few scarier things than thinking your research is done lol, I guess that would be the case for a researcher tho, now if only you could turn that into a Halloween costume. But yeah this was another fantastic episode, Ruri not only found her sapphire, but also learned that retracing your steps can help make big new discoveries, like here where they completely disregarded an area before it was revealed that they should have been looking there from the start. And boy those sure are some pretty rocks, I’ve always been a big fan of sapphires because blue on a rock is just so cool looking, also one of my favorite Pokémon games happens to be named after them, so seeing the girls uncover so many was awesome to witness.

Some other things of note, Nagi with her hair up was a nice look, same with ponytail Ruri. I also really liked that moment where Imari collided with Nagi’s ass, talk about an immovable object lol. And lastly the dragon stuff was a cool addition to the sapphire discovery, I like when history and mythology tie in like that, but yeah dragons definitely didn’t exist unless you count the Komodo Dragon lol.

Fantastic episode again. Our Ruri is becoming quite the scientist. Although she did make a mistake on her notes she did go back and correct herself. A lot of the momentum of this episode was carried by her decisions from her own research and previous knowledge.

The sapphire search is over, or to be continued? Either way I'll be back for the next episode.

@thewiru 1) Probably a few years to decades at most for the most recent boulder. The mountain just happens to be a site full of landslides every once in a while reveal deposits that quickly get covered up by leaves every once in a while and forbidden to mine for religious and cultural reasons.
2) Sapphire Price per carat ranges from $350 to $5500 USD. Looks like they found blue gold. However I'm not sure about the effects of retail versus selling it raw. I feel it being raw means some business owner can scale that price down.

Besides Ruri's development as a budding geologist, Ruri no Houseki also illustrates how seemingly unrelated fields are linked together, through connection of a local myth to the presence of sapphire. The linked article illustrates this in greater detail: Ruri no Houseki might be a geology anime, but it does a wonderful job of communicating the depths of science as a whole.

Excellent episode. Ruri taking initiative - making suggestions about next steps, analyzing her own data, catching mistakes, working her butt off. Hitting the motherlode felt earned. Don't know if it's this easy to find sapphires, but the scientific process made sense and was kind of inspiring. The historical "blue dragon" angle was extra interesting.

And it ended with a great lesson - the research is never done, there's always more to discover and re-discover.

This was such a heartwarming and inspiring episode focused on the scientific method. Ruri has already grown up a lot and her notes are quite organized for a girl of her age. All of that hard work paid off and even though she started to feel anxious about her previous work thanks to what Imari said and what she had written down, it's true that it cut down a lot of field to look for, clear up a myth and overall was the key to the goal. Well goal considering Ruri had stopped at the gem's location but I feel like she's hooked in to continue.

This anime is doing wonders for mineralogy.

@Sheol01 I could not find anything on mineral rights in Japan, but there is a Forestry Law and for mining, they need to register for a permit. From what I gather, a permit, some formation of a business, and of course taxes are needed for them to harvest and profit from these minerals. The bureaucracy takes away from their research, not to mention given that this might be claimed by a shrine makes this not worth the hassle.

It is back to government funded research for them. It may not pay well, but at least the show makes it look very rewarding, and some times that is way more important than money.

Yeah. We have a place near where I live where you can actually pan for diamonds. And though it's a State Park now, you keep what you find. People have found some impressive ones, though that is rare. I have also done that for rubies and actually gotten one, plus a bronze sapphire & garnets. That was fun. Most places in the USA run on tourist money but allow the visitors to keep the gems & other minerals they find.

It was meant to be a joke, not a spoiler: the Geiger-Müller counter is a device used to detect radiation. However, considering the legacy of Japan and nuclear events, I'm fairly sure we won't encounter any radioactive minerals in Ruri the Rock.
