@kuroneko99 Geddy Lee is an incredible musician but I really can't get into his vocals. At least they're unique. @MYZIC Well online prog communities have been posting the "X prog band's fans are fat virgins" meme ever since the internet was invented so at least there is some self deprecating humor. |

@kuroneko99 Certainly. Portnoy and Myung very often sound like fast Neil Peart and Geddy Lee. Moore too. I wonder what he's up to... Rudess is good but I prefer Moore's parts even though he only did three albums. e.g. the part that starts at 8:10 on Learning to Live is my favorite DT keyboard part. I like how it's a weird rearrangement of the verse that starts at around 1:30. |

You know, I really like Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play even though they are a bit of a controversial part of Jethro Tull's discography. They are very fun listens. |

Theo1899 said: Those two albums (and Aqualung) are deemed as their major works here too. Though somehow many of us including me here can't understand their charm. (Moody Blues and Gentle Giant are also kind of... difficult for us.) As for Tull, the reason might be related to blues or country vibes. You know, I really like Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play even though they are a bit of a controversial part of Jethro Tull's discography. They are very fun listens. Judging from values of versions in Discogs, Aqualung (677 versions) and Thick as a Brick (356 versions) would be their most popular works. I see Ange... Never liked Ange, I'm french and their lyrics annoy me to death. But did you know, an unreleased 70s french prog album recently resurfaced? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5hTgRNbehs The story is interesting. The only remaining copy of the album was apparently a compact cassette at some point. The son of a friend of one of the band mates remembered this band from his childhood and decided to look for it and get it released. Unlike Ange, I can listen to it without wanting to cry at the annoying pretentious lyrics lol. There's also some great japanese prog rock. One of my fav prog rock albums. Shingetsu sounds like Yes, Genesis and King Crimson rolled in one. The end of Oni is CRAZY. That guitar tone is sitting right next to Fripp's tone on Starless in the pantheon of best guitar tones ever. |

I think my favourite track is Big Generator, that might just be because it's in Gunnm though. Album wise I like Wish You Were Here and Tarkus quite a lot. WingsR said: I like this, going to have to listen to it again, thanks for posting it. You're welcome o7 My favorite Yes albms are Close to the Edge/Relayer. I dig the format, one 20 mins song on one side, two 10 mins song on the other side. In a different genre, Bongripper does something similar with Satan Worshipping Doom/Miserable/Terminal/Empty, with each "side" being either one 20+ mins track, or two 10-15 mins tracks.... Well, I say "in a different genre", but there are some doom bands that feel close to prog rock to me. Black Sabbath and Yes toured together after all... I haven't listened to Relayer in a decade... I should probably do that right now. |

Used to be a Prog Rock fan until I discovered the world of Prog Metal. My favorites would be Jason Richardson (song – Byronius Of The 4th Order), Haken (song – Messiah Complex Pt.1 The Ivory Tower), Veil Of Maya (song – Outsider), Volumes (song – Serenity), Vector (song – Recharging The Void). Prog Rock is still cool, though. I like Genesis (song – Battle Of The Epping Forest), Rush (song – Scars; yeah, that's a weird choice but Presto is my favorite album, so), King Crimson (song – Red). Used to be into Yes but than I realized that the sound is too soft for my taste. With Pink Floyd, once again, a pretty controversial opinion but I think that A Momentary Lapse Of Reason and The Division Bell are their best albums, and, well, those aren't really Prog Rock anymore. |

@Deathko Though I don't understand French at all, I could sense the lyrics of "Reveille-Toi" would be very... upsetting. As for "Satan", I didn't know it. Thank you for the info! Though other tunes in the album are weak, Oni is redeemed as one of the greatest Japanese prog tunes. I added "Shingetsu" entry in the list now. @WingsR @RudeRedis As each person has his own tastes and encounters to artists, his favorites sometimes differ from major works. or diversity dies. Actually, I don't know much about progMetal and how big share progMetal has in Metal genre. I hope you share good music with us in this thread. some of my favorites (though they may have become obsolete now): Spiral Architect Zero Hour Sieges Even Azure --- Helloise Circus Maximus |

Riverside. A Polish band (Poland is surprisingly strong in regards of prog rock/metal), making music that clearly has influences from Pink Floyd, Marillion and Porcupine Tree, just a little bit harder. This is the first song I have ever heard from them, many years ago: |

@Fukoku There are some progressive artists who went mainstream like Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Rush and Yes so you might have heard them. Although the last four went mainstream after they started incorporating more pop and conventional rock elements into their sound. Pink Floyd too now that I think about it. Their most popular tracks are the least progressive ones. Bohemian Rhapsody is also pretty proggy with its weird structure and most people in the western cultural sphere have heard it. If you are into metal you've probably heard Pull me Under, very famous early 90s progressive song. Metallica were also influenced by progressive music on Master of Puppets and And Justice For All although these records aren't purely progressive by any means. |
