LMAO, I can see either being the case!

I think so? It seems familiar but I'd have to double-check. Poe is interesting because he dabbled in a lot of genres--for example, he was actually the father of the modern detective story! Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a big fan of Poe's Paris mysteries and credited him with the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. Valid! You can usually pick up a collection of most (if not all) of his stuff for decently cheap, and The Poetry Foundation has his poetry online. It's a lot of fun, I'm hoping to go back at some point but my work schedule is a little all over the place rn ๐Ÿคฃ Oh, that's fair! Now that I think of it, I think Disney did a 20,000 Leagues movie back in the 1950s, so maybe I should watch that! Understandable, books are super expensive nowadays so might as well read online for free if you can ๐Ÿ˜Š

It was nuts, LMAO. It's been like 4 years since I read it, so I'm not sure what the reasoning behind me dropping it was exactly, but either the lore got too confusing or I just got bored with the story. Yeah, I can understand not wanting to go too far, but new stuff is fun. Damn, okay, that's kind of insane! I can see why people would be freaking out!!!

Oof, yeah, you step outside and get hit with it within seconds ๐Ÿ˜ญ I feel like pollen allergy symptoms can depend on who you are--I've been coughing a fair bit this go-around, but that's probably because I had a really bad case of pneumonia last summer and I've been more prone to coughing since. LMAO, glad to hear you're enjoying it ๐Ÿคฃ There's always tons of new songs to check out, which is one of the best things about Vocaloid imo!! I really like MVs that have little easter eggs in them, if you've seen any of those
yuurei_tokyo Sep 1, 6:32 PM
Honestly if I ever get bored I would probably re-read it to see if it's somehow gotten worse in the meantime LMAO. I love to read bad stuff and laugh at it

Oh, I bet!! That's fair, lmao. Jules Verne was a really big Edgar Allan Poe fan and actual wrote a continuation to Poe's only novel (so essentially he wrote Poe fanfic)! Poe was a pretty early pioneer of science fiction, so it makes sense. Most of his short stories are pretty good (Cask of Amontillado is a personal favorite) but I personally prefer his poetry--Annabel Lee and Bridal Ballad are my personal favorites but The Raven is the big one. I've read most of his work because my city has a museum about him and I used to volunteer there ๐Ÿ˜Š Around the World in 80 Days sounds the most interesting to me, but I'll see if I can pick up a compliation of his works or something along those lines! I'll let you know! I definitely read it back in the day (well, the abridged version) and I can't remember much about it TBH. I don't think I've read that many "classic" books, actually--I did read some in HS for Literature but The Great Gatsby was the only one that stuck out to me.

Oh, yeah, definitely. There was also a phenomenon called "Lobotomy Kaisen" where people would go stir crazy and come up with insane memes during breaks, which happened pretty often near the end. What happened in Hanako-kun? I dropped the series so I don't mind spoilers. Very much so--the sterrotypes exist for a reason but subverting them is usually more interesting.

Good to hear!! I figured I would remind you just in case LMAO. Apparently it's the pollen specifically that causes allergies--everyone in my family has it pretty bad rn ๐Ÿ˜ญ I'm reading about it on Wikipedia and it seems like a very evil plant.
yuurei_tokyo Aug 31, 8:07 PM
It was so bad....the author wouldn't stop bringing up the fact that Edward was a teenager either so it was like. Why. Why am I here. Nah, it's looped around to the point where it's funny, and it's definitely not the only thing we joke about, lmao.

Definitely! I don't think I've ever played a JRPG, now that I think about it. Unless Zelda or Fire Emblem count? Oh, whoops ๐Ÿคฃ I don't know much about him other than his connection to Edgar Allan Poe and the fact that the Paris version of Space Mountain was based on his work for a while, maybe I should give him a read sometime. I'm not sure if I've ever had an actual croissant (I have some allergies so I have a feeling that's probably why), but baguettes are the shit!! Thank you for the link!! Now that I look at it I have a sneaking suspicion that I read it in my British Lit class in HS but I'll probably read it anyways at some point. I think it was less abridged and more rewritten to make sense for kids in the lower levels of elementary school? I can't remember the name of the series for the life of me but I know that Swiss Family Robinson and The Secret Garden were also part of it. Lots of books from the 1800s/early 1900s that have language that a modern 3rd grader would probably struggle with.

Oh, valid! It's a lot of fun, I remember when JJK was still releasing and watching people have a meltdown on Twitter every week. I'm pretty sure the mangaka is inspired by shonen as well because it is definitely still within action shonen bounds, but it has a certain vibe to it that makes the John Wick inspiration clear, if that makes sense. It has its comedic moments but it's generally not as comedy-focused as I would imagine something like Naruto or One Piece would be (in my head, at least--never read either so take what I say with a grain of salt). That happens to me a lot, too! I feel like shonen protagonists can easily fall into stereotypes or feel like a parody of themselves so it's nice to see a good one. Chihiro feels a lot like a real person who just happens to be a shonen manga protagonist TBH.

Unrelated, but I hope that you are taking good care of your health, in case it's allergy season where you are ๐Ÿค— Ragweed has come early here because of lower-than-usual temperatures and it's kicking my ass LMAO
yuurei_tokyo Aug 31, 9:36 AM
It's AWFUL!!! Like, I was holding out until the smut hit because I was like "well maybe the sex will be better than the rest of the book," and NOOOO, it was SO BAD!!! Not the worst parts of the book but up there. My friends still bring the astral projection stuff up to mess with me sometimes LMAO.

Oh, 100%! I feel like settings are generally an overlooked part of the manga/anime experience-they can add so much to a series if done well! The setting in Vanitas kind of gives Jules Verne vibes imo, since the world has a lot more technological innovations than Paris would have actually had at the time. That's an absolutely beautiful building ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I have had a fresh French baguette before and they're soooo good. I think I ate an entire baguette by myself that day, LMAO. That's cool! I don't think I ever read Alice in Wonderland but I've seen the Disney movie, lol. Actually, maybe I have? I had this series of essentially abbreviated versions of classic books made for kids in late elementary school, and that might have been one of them. Now I wonder if I can find it...

I will! ๐Ÿซก Kagurabachi is excellent (probably the best action shonen I've read) but it updates weekly so it's a little hard to recommend ๐Ÿคฃ The creator is apparently really inspired by John Wick so maybe that's why it feels different to me. Also I love the protagonist, Chihiro is so silly ๐Ÿฅฐ

OMG I'm so sorry for not replying, MAL never gave me a notif and I haven't logged on in a bit ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

So, essentially, it's about this 20-something American woman who gets magically transported back into Middle Ages England (during the Wars of the Roses, if you happen to know what that is) and falls in love with a young Edward IV, who is, get this, 17 YEARS OLD when the books start. There are no likable characters AT ALL and it just generally has a lot of nasty stuff in it (misogyny, really inaccurate depictions of how witches would have operated, generally really inaccurate history, weird anti-Irish sentiment, the whole nine yards). Also, the two leads have sex via astral projection. I wish I was making that up.

The setting was one of my favorite parts of it when I was reading/watching ๐Ÿ˜Š The anime is actually pretty worth it if you feel like holding off on reading it. Oh, it's on hiatus? Actually, now that I think about it, people online who I know collect it haven't said anything about a new volume in a while. Hopefully the author is well! TRUE!! I think it would be fun to go to Paris someday-my major in college actually had a study abroad course that went there and one of the profs is from Paris! He's a very interesting character to be sure--he has a lot going on, to avoid saying any spoilers. Ah, yeah, they're the same person! I thought about mentioning but I wasn't sure if you knew that series too, lmao.

I did!! I'd want to know more about it before I decide to check it out or not, but I might look at it when it drops. Curious to see how things will work out, at least-I'd say Akutami is probably one of the better shounen writers out there at the moment (ignoring the fiasco that is the end of JJK), but I do think that people like Hokazono (who writes Kagurabachi) have them beat.

hiii!!
nice to meet you again~
yuurei_tokyo Aug 27, 7:24 PM
I keep coming across them completely by accident! I read one when I was in late middle school and another last year. The one from the last year was probably the worst thing I've ever had the misfortune of reading. It was so bad that me and my IRLs still joke about it to this day LMAO. I'll let you know!!

Thank you! No worries, just do what you're comfortable with ๐Ÿ˜Š Ohhh, it's MMORPG? Somehow I missed that, oops! That's good, something is better than nothing. Oh, it's very Gothic! It actually takes place in 1870s/1880s Paris iirc so do with that what you will. There's an arc that takes place almost entirely in the Catacombs very early on in the series that I remember really enjoying! The other main character (whose POV the series is mainly told through) is a vampire who Vanitas ropes into becoming his bodyguard, and he's a pretty funny guy. And, yea, I don't think I've ever read a non-het romance vampire series without BL undertones.
Laniakea Aug 27, 12:27 PM
Hmm i suppose with Dream Dolphin i'd go with Love Eating Alien, Atmospheric Healing, Tsuki no Iyashi and Angel 13 (the one i sent) as the best ones to check out. Keep in mind i haven't actually listened to all her discography so i wouldn't take my word at gospel. Also funny you mention Celldweller cause i've been getting back into him lately (and started trying to explore more of his songs) mainly inspired by clicking on the link on your profile and liking the song (Own Little World). I really like his sci fi aesthetic and the fact that he does concept albums with their own lore, it's a really cool and creative idea that not that many artists seem to do (or at least not in the same way Celldweller does). There's also an artist quite similar to Celldweller whom i used to listen to a lot a few years back called Blue Stahli, if you haven't listened to him then i'd really recommend "ULTRAnumb" "Takedown" and "Anti You", such good tracks! :D

I have heard of Yuzo Koshiro and listened to a bit of him after i read your message, and yeah i do like his music! To be honest i feel like he was very influential because i do recognize his sound coming from a lot of other video game composers later on, and even some modern niche electronic music that imitates the old chiptune music sounds kinda like him. There's also this very cool video i saw a while back from HappyConsoleGamer (a very cool Youtuber) that relates to Kishiro:

yuurei_tokyo Aug 26, 6:27 PM
I accidentally finished a third oneshot today (I like to "preview" manga by reading a chapter or two before I buy it and I knew I probably wouldn't buy this one but I wanted to knock it out anyways), so it keeps decreasing! Ah, yeah, I tend to be hard on myself as well so that's probably a factor. Time travel isn't super common in romance from what I can tell (I've honestly only been into book romance for the last year or so), I just tend to come across them by accident, LMAO. I'm hoping to get started on it soon so I can let you know how it goes, if you like?

I will be careful, thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š I added both songs to my Watch Later--I'm actually familiar with the producer who made the second song and I generally like their musical style so I'll probably like the song at least a little bit! I'll listen to pretty much anything except for country so feel free to send song recs anytime ๐Ÿค— I like to sing to myself so I tend to pick up lyrics of songs pretty quickly as I sing along. Oh, is it an isekai? That's pretty interesting though, lore seems pretty well-developed. Vanitas is pretty good, I watched the anime with my college anime club and I read the manga for a while. I personally found the actual plot to be a little confusing, but the characters are generally likable and the art is gorgeous! From what I remember, there's some sort of disease/disorder caused by a supernatural entity that makes vampires go crazy and attack humans and Vanitas himself is a doctor who can heal this disorder. It has some BL undertones, LMAO. Yeah, making it too developed could be too much for one volume.
yuurei_tokyo Aug 26, 8:42 AM
Minus one! The manga I started actually isn't listed on MAL for whatever reason, so it wasn't in my tbr here, lol. I ended up saving like $25 on what would have been a $100 order so it was pretty worth it, I'd say. Thank you! I thought I bombed the interview completely but I guess they saw something I didn't ๐Ÿคฃ Oh, yeah, you usually don't see time travel in Western romances, I feel (although this is only technically a romance, I think). I've read 2 other time travel romance book series before and they were frankly both ass, but I have a feeling this one will be better simply on the virtue of it not being published in the 2000s. That's true, I'm really hoping that I didn't hallucinate them because I think it would be very cool to start getting special editions with painted edges.

That's fair! I try to keep mine down as well but one of my ears likes to ring really loudly so I have to turn up the volume in order to hear better, which usually ends up in me getting jumpscared by some loud audio whenever I switch videos. People on Instagram were using at as BGM for their stuff, and as far as I know, the app won't let you adjust audio volume and the natural volume of the song is loud. No problem, glad you like it! It's a lot of fun to sing ๐Ÿ˜Š Oh, that's a cool idea, what manga is it? The idea of a vampire society actually reminds me a lot of Vanitas no Karte, if you know that series. I feel like it might be cool if the author could manage to make one, but it could be hard if there's only going to be one more volume. Good luck! The August one actually might still be available but I'm not 100% sure, thank you tho :D
yuurei_tokyo Aug 25, 5:55 PM
That's fair! I'm pretty picky about it personally (I only buy secondhand it it's in good condition), so I think it's reasonable to not like it ๐Ÿ˜Š LMAO, I feel that...one of the English manga publishers is having a sale right now and I bought 2 series because I thought they were interesting on a whim. At least I started a new short series last night and finished two today? I start my job on Wednesday so better get that reading time in now LOL. The book in question is Gate to Kagoshima, in case you would like to look! I feel like paperbacks usually don't have them (from what I've seen), so it's nice to have a best-of-both-worlds situation since I'm not a big fan of hardcover books. It was very striking when I saw it, and if I can manage to dig up a picture I will link it! Definitely a strange choice to have it be hot pink, though, I'm imagining it would be in reference to the spine lettering on the original English prints (which are also hot pink).

Oh fair, LMAO, I feel like it can move pretty fast. I feel like my friends start talking about some new popular song or producer once every couple of weeks. The actual song itself mainly hurts my head if it's at a loud volume...which sucks when you keep getting recommended videos that play it at max volume when you least expect it, oops! There's a Teto (and Miku) song I really enjoy called ใƒ€ใ‚คใƒ€ใ‚คใƒ€ใ‚คใ‚ญใƒฉใ‚ค, maybe you'll like it? No worries if you don't, though!

Now I'm picturing him as the metaphorical runt of the litter...maybe all of his family members have some sort of power that he doesn't have? Vampire society would be super cool but I can't remember if that was hinted at or not. Yeah, it's a pretty easy process, it usually takes me 5 minutes or so. I'm glad I made sense!
yuurei_tokyo Aug 25, 9:30 AM
Depending on how old the manga you like is, maybe you could try some secondhand sites? I know a lot of people sell manga secondhand on Mercari, so it probably wouldn't be too much of a stretch to assume that something like that would have something you'd be into (mentioning Mercari because it's a Japanese platform, but I'd imagine you can find stuff on Ebay as well.) I did find a site that mentions Comic Vamp--seems like it's digital as of the publishing of this โ˜น๏ธ Yep!! I know it's very popular for books to have them right now (I actually got a book for my birthday that has cherry blossoms on the edges), so provided I'm not tripping, Viz is probably trying to capitalize on the trend. I remember them being a sort of hot pink, maybe with a plaid design, but I haven't been able to find a picture of them that isn't just the cover yet. Yeah, I think it would have been better if there was more color involved.

It could be? I have seen people mod the game to restore the original shading/artstyle, but then again, I'm not sure how modded Switch hardware works compared to normal Switch hardware. Lmao, it's chill, I listen to a lot of old stuff as well! Tbh I haven't been super into a lot of the newer popular songs-there was one song that was popular last year (Mesmerizer) that I had to actively avoid because the song and MV gave me a headache. Ah, yeah, that's a fair point. I almost feel like Teto has been more popular than the non-Miku Cryptonloids lately, but I'm not sure on that...

Oh definitely!! I love domestic BL so it's right up my alley ๐Ÿ˜Š I love lore....I want the author to cook up more lore.....Also, I'm just really curious since his family seemed very mysterious and I was intrigued by them. Every month (usually in the first couple of days), Seven Seas posts a Google form on their website and socials where you can suggest manga/light novels/danmei/etc for them to publish (and then they talk about their new releases and ask what you're looking forwards to but you can skip that part). It's pretty easy, I think you only have to list 1 series but I think you can put up to 4 (I think usually it's 3 comic/manga spots and 1 light novel/danmei spot but I'm not 100%). IIRC they have a slot where you can fill in manga/LNs from Japan specifically and then slots for non-Japanese stuff. I've never had to put in my Gmail address or anything so I don't think that would be a concern? The August one should still be up I think (sorry if this was confusing ๐Ÿ˜ญ)
Laniakea Aug 25, 2:33 AM
First off i'm really really glad that you listened to all my recommendations! Not everybody does you know, so it makes me happy when someone reciprocates <3

Yeah Ateriavia is sort of a mix of different things like hard trance (harder, more techno-y trance) and hexd, which is a bit of a weird subgenre but RateYourMusic defines it a "Heavily bit-crushed vocals, sometimes sped-up and pitched-up, and highly compressed and distorted production, typically made from existing material of other genres."

I actually haven't listened to much of BT other than that album, but the first track is too much of a banger for me to move on!!

Dream Dolphin is definitely worth a further look for me as well, though i have listened to a few of her albums now. Thinking back on it, a lot of her albums don't really sound that trance-y at all but are more acid and techno with some more ambient moments dispersed throughout. And yeah i find it cool how many video game soundtracks take heavy inspiration from various forms of electronic music, and i honestly think it helped develop my interest in the style to begin with, since video games have always been a very big hobby of mine and i was exposed to various video game score growing up, which was some of the first music i really started liking and i think electronic music was a good jumping off point from there.
yuurei_tokyo Aug 24, 11:26 AM
That's fair! If there's a certain demographic you prefer, maybe try looking at those? Yeah, honestly, the cover is really plain. I really want to say that it has painted edges (if you know what those are), and if so, that's nice, but I think I hallucinated that. It might be new art from the mangaka, but I feel like doing something in the original color scheme would have been better.

That's valid! I do think that the cell-shading looks good on the actual outfits, I just think that it makes the faces a little too washed out, especially in certain MVs. I almost wish they had included an option to pick which graphics you wanted (cell-shading or no cell-shading). Oof, you're right ๐Ÿ˜ญ IA is definitely still relevant, but I feel like the amount of people using her has been slowly declining. (Granted, I haven't been *super* in tune with what's popular for the last couple of months, but I haven't heard my friends who are talk about any popular IA songs recently.) That might be because I think most of her newer stuff was moved to the CevIO engine instead, which doesn't seem to be super popular? She has an English voicebank that was originally supposed to be for Vocaloid4 but got put on CevIO instead, I wonder if things would be different if her English VB had been released on Vocaloid4. (Might be worth noting that CevIO itself has not recieved any updates since 2020 and has a really limited list of voicebanks.)

Yayy!!! I like how it's weirdly domestic, LMAO. If I had to guess, maybe volume 2 will deal with Sara's family? It was touched on a little but there's definitely some trauma there, LMAO. (Unrelated but I want it in English soooo bad....I'll put it in the Seven Seas license suggestion form when it refreshes for September)
yuurei_tokyo Aug 23, 1:23 PM
So sorry for the late reply, I never got a notification for some reason ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

That's fair! You'd probably have the easiest time with Shounen Jump or something like that if you're looking for a new series, I feel like new ones are constantly dropping. 100%, that's why I'm debating if I want to get Nana in the singles or wait for the upcoming omnibuses. Omnibuses would be cheapter but tbh I'm not the biggest fan of how they look ๐Ÿ˜ญ (here is a link if you want to see). Also hardcore agree re: collectors' editions and such, I know manga is an expensive hobby if you're not from Japan but c'mon man, I just want cheaper manga!!

That sounds fair, I think I thought about buying something from there once. Have you ever checked out Kinokuniya? They might have a decent selection.

Each equipment type is mapped to a button on the D-pad, so when you hold down the corresponding button, it opens a little pop-up menu that you can scroll through to find what you need. It takes about 5 seconds and you can even sort it by a couple of different criteria IIRC. I actually got Echoes of Wisdom for Christmas last year but I have yet to actually start playing ๐Ÿ˜ญ I've completed Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom and played about 1/3 of Twilight Princess, and I'd like to play Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask if I can get my hands on an emulator. Yeah, probably, LMAO! Future Tone also has better graphics IMO-Mega Mix has this sort of awkward cell shading going on. Sixty songs is pretty good for a less-popular Vocaloid, but I suppose that IA was pretty popular back in the day in her own right.

I'm caught up as of this moment and the latest chapters have been a little shorter, but new chapters come out every day or so....๐Ÿ˜ฌ
