There's definitely some ideal clashes going on. In a joint session, we can see Hana's personality bloom. It definitely felt like a character development episode for her.

She and Pokoko has some interesting chemistry and both could learn from each other. Clearly, this anime wants us to see Hana grow more in her role.

I think Totonoi’s advice to Hana there at the end is the best she’s got so far. So many people in this series have given her conflicting tips. Like Mitsuka was such a Debbie downer. Just because you admire someone doesn’t mean you can’t want to compete with and beat them? Like what sort of warped worldview do some of these people have lol. In fact, I think most people do want to beat people BECAUSE they admire them.

At the end of the day, Hana will NEVER be Mizuki, Pokoko or anyone else. You will always be the best version of yourself and that’s all you can ask for. That said, nothing wrong with taking advice and feedback from older more experienced readers like Pokoko, just don’t change who you are!

Lmao, now Natsue want to be vulnerable and bonding with people over the person they like being into someone else 😂 wasn’t expecting her to have such a “girly” moment

Great episode as usual, this should be the start of a new chapter for Hana I can’t wait

Hana has to do something about her anxiety soon, it not an easy work but if she stays like this, she could very well mess up during the completion.

Natsue made a friend, it's a rare occurrence with character with her personalities.

Totonoi helped Hana a lot and with that Hana have a strong resolve.

I really hope the next episode have more readings, that is what makes this show so unique, but they keep going away from that, to tell the female MC how or how not to read, which is bothering me, because I like her reading as is.

"cute" ... that annoyed me, "you sound like your reading for children", no she sounds like she has feeling and emotion in her reading, not just flatly pronouncing words on a page. And the subtle gesture she did to evoke rain, could also mean there is a leak in the house, not necessarily from rain.

I like that Hana puts heart and soul into her reading and gestures, it makes the material better.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

I'm really rooting for Hana in the competition. She grew so much already, I'm sure she'll be fine.
Pokoko wanted to help, but it really is overwhelming when you receive a lot of advice like that... But I'm sure Hana can learn a lot with her yet.

In less than 20 seconds, An and Chiaki became friends, bonding over their heartbreak. But it didn’t last long since Misaki is a bit territorial when it comes to her friend An.

Hana’s reading isn’t bad—she has the right tone of voice—but because she’s so used to reading for children, her narration feels simple and soft to ensure they understand the story and stay engaged. Unconsciously, she carries this style over to an adult audience, but when her passion kicks in, she can truly draw people in. The problem is she doesn’t know how to reach that level intentionally, and anxiety takes over as she questions if she’s doing it right.

Once again, Ryouko gives impeccable advice to help Hana grow. Even though she doesn’t get much screen time, her relationship with Hana is significant. She’s someone who understands her and teaches her that her reading isn’t bad—it just needs direction. She has to decide who she’s speaking to, how she’s going to do it, and why.

While Pokoko gave some good advice it was too much for Hana to take all at once but at least Totonio listening to and giving advice to Hana helped her resolve. With 2 episodes remaining I'm thinking that this will end with the NHK tournament.

Was nice to hear all of the different styles and voices from their future competition. So many new characters, but the episode remained just as engaging. Hana realizing that her friends were competition had her down, but unless they have some sort of rule for only one competitor per school, multiple could definitely make it to nationals if they are good enough. I still feel like she is worrying about the wrong things here. Also, she got some friendly advice that overloaded her, but I was hoping someone would tell her there are many different paths to victory. If there was only one way to read, every competition would be the same. Anyway, a lot of interesting build up and I'm excited for the competition.

This episode felt weirdly unfocused if that makes sense? Even though everything kind of tied to the overall plot it still felt like there was a lot of jumping around with little time to just take in what was happening. Maybe a consequence of the cast having grown so much and the fact that the anime is only 12 episodes long.

Hana had a bit of a difficult time with so many tips and advice overwhelming her a bit. Her new friends did have a point about learning from the best, even if it means you lack your own style of doing things until you get better at what you're doing, but it didn't really suit the Hana does her recitation. Even the advice from Pokoko and Hiragidani only left her more conflicted and confused about her own performance.

Ryouko stepped up and helped Hana far better than the others did combined. Reflecting on her past experience, she can relate to Hana about her worries as well as already tasting defeat against Mizuki in a past recitation contest. Ryouko was able to find her own resolve and belief in what she does, ridding any doubt in her talent and can do the best that she can. Giving that advice to Hana to help her find her own resolve to improve in a way that suits her was a great moment in this episode. =)

We all learn things better and worse than others, so the advice that Hana got earlier are good in a way, but I don't think it suits her style at all, otherwise her performance will feel more like someone else's rather than her own. It's all the more reason as to why I want to see her get better while staying true to what she believes to be the right thing that matches her way of reciting.

Hana really didn’t realize until the last minute that when you go to a competition…you have to compete (even against your heroes)😅.

I am hoping they all do well.

An found a sempai from another school,Chiaki, with whom she confide the boy she fancies. When An held hands with Chiaki, it looks like a mirror image of the key visual for Bloom Into You. Yuri bait?

Okay, so the voice quality of Hana is never a problem. From people's impressions, her voice is superb. The problem is that she will get a lot of points deducted due to unpolished bits of her delivery.

I heard a bit of what Pokoko was saying, and it might not be apparent if you're clueless about Japanese and bidakuon.

Bidakuon is pronouncing g nasally, i.e. instead of /g/ as in guy, it's /ng/ as in singer. There are rules for this when g should be a hard g and when a g should be spoken nasally.

Many people don't speak like this, but it's considered posh speak, so to speak, which is why newscasters speak this way.

Based also on the subs, Pokoko is instructing Hana about 'whispered mora'.

Example, in the name Asuka, the u is not pronounced or whispered, so we hear it as Aska.

It seems that Hana might be fully pronouncing some of the syllables when they should be whispered or perhaps the other way around.

Also, up until now, the way Hana speaks is based on her habit of speaking to children. She must then speak properly to a different audience.

Hana's shortcomings in these technical aspects is affecting her groove, and another user has expressed numerous times about their concern. I reckon Hana can overcome this through practice and undoing bad habits.

But seeing that Hana feels discouraged, Ryouko intervened and encouraged Hana, and the latter is a valuable support for the former.

I understand what you mean in the sense that the statement you quoted from that character did feel slightly - and could be easily interpreted as, condescending and derogatory, but I don't think that it was intended to be. I think that what the character in question was trying to get at and demonstrate is that there are multiple different distinct styles of reading and oral presentation intended for different audiences. It's similar to how anime, cinema, manga/comics, and other forms of media cater to different demographic audiences. Hana's style is very lively and animated in a way that is usually interpreted as for children because she excelled in reading as part of her children's storytime sessions - that one-girl show she put on for the kids in her local community on her home island.

That style is one which is likely considered just the right fit for children and younger people (alternatively could also be appreciated by autistics and the developmentally/emotionally stunted who prefer emotions to be upfront and worn on the sleeve, and more exaggerated and caricature-esque performances), but could be considered too pat, showy, cheesy, and over the top. As opposed to a quieter and less boisterous performance which could be seen as possessing more depth and nuance, and more appropriate for an older teen and/or adult audience. It may also be more in line with the prevailing style sought at these regional and national-level competitions by their judges.

Presumably the older students who have been in their respective schools' clubs longer and have some past and involvement with the large competitions are more informed than both the character of Hana and us in the audience at this point as to what they're looking for or if there is one closely followed and strict enough standard observed and enforced with little room for creative deviation, but that point might be further shown and elaborated upon later on.

@WatchTillTandava @WatchTillTandava Hello and thank you for explaining, that helped a lot.

I can see that I was overthinking the comment, especially if that is a culture difference for them, for young eye

I admit that I prefer Hana’s reading compared to how they keep telling her to read, and how that famous girl and blonde girl read.

Hana reads and it moves my heart and mind, bringing tears to my eyes, with pleasant emotions and thoughts.

I hear those others read, it seems flat lifeless even boring, even when they do the same animation like with Hana.

I think this is made worse because I don’t know the Japanese language, so what is moving to me is the genuine emotion, life, color, light she speaks with.

It seems to be the same with me and music theory. I prefer the Beatles’ songs, who didn’t learn music theory, instead of many songs that only follow music theory.

Hana going to Botanpoko for advice to improve her recitation, and with just a few simple actions and nuances, she should've gotten the small bits covered just in time for the competition. Even Mizuki was grilled the same way, though the stress clearly got to Hana, and worse still, Lilac Girls' Mitsuka Hiragidani briefed this the hard way by focusing on victory first than friendship as the Star of her school's Academy. To admire people, is to beat them, there's no question at all.

Natsue finding her confidante through Chizuru High's 3rd Year of Chiaki Hayashi having a crush on Toga's friend, and it's safe to assume that Natsue herself had someone she admires aswell. Still, this exchange program is well worth it and shows off the chops of the severity of going to Nationals, whilst the select few are chosen and the many left behind, which for the longest time, that's what Hana wanted to avoid, but reality caught her unprepared, just as Totonoi had when facing against Mizuki. Still, the best version of the recital is your own reading, and that also can be dictated as resolve as well.

Time for Hana to find her resolve, and ace the NHK Cup on her accord.

The treatment of competition is so strange in this anime. Almost every character treats it like this tournament and their placement in it is the only purpose of reading when I don't think most people would even know there is a competition for this. This isn't something that decides their future or full of fame or, except in a few cases, reflecting years of effort. Normally I appreciate anime's tendency to be intensely dramatic about unexpected things, but usually that'd be in a show with a much more exaggerated tone. In the soft slice of life it's just out of place.

Seriously, every next person freaks out our main girl, or more like she gets freaked out so easily. It would've been nice if someone tells her to just enjoy whatever she's been doing but no, rather it has become the way where she's not allowed to survive if she doesn't act competitive.

They need to chill lmaooo.
