You can often hear that love and hate are very similar feelings and that very often the road from one to the other is quite short. Therefore, I was wondering if there were any anime for which your feelings for one reason or another changed, if not to the opposite, then at least greatly changed their nature for the better or for the worse? If yes, what were the reasons for this? If to the whole anime, then maybe to some characters, adaptation or author and original work?

Didn't like School Days at first, but then I read the characters are supposed to be unlikable, that changed my mind of the show.

I actually had a different experience from Zarutaku. I gave School Days the benefit of the doubt in the beginning. But as I continued watching it, I could understand why many people didn't like it. Even if the characters were meant to be unlikable.

I'm Standing on a Million Lives

Tried it once and didn't like it because it seemed like a regular generic trash isekai.

Tried it again, and it was still kinda trash and kinda generic, but I became more tolerant when I saw character development happening and the story going on its own adventure, that's when I grew to really like it.

It asked the question of 'is this world really a video game world?' and sometimes it reminded me of Re:Zero by 1%

Orange. I appreciated it a lot, almost to the end when it was mostly a story of love transcending time, with the FMC finding a way back in time in hopes of saving someone she cared so much about. Not to mention that the mystery behind the MMC was also intriguing. I even appreciated the twist of someone else being in the same situation as the FMC, whose involvement could be justified if we look at it in a romance perspective...
... but then it went overboard, brought everyone else in, and basically became a 'power of friendship'.

In hindsight, it was mostly my fault for not immediately seeing it was heading towards a 'Power of Friendship' thing as soon as one of them got involved. It only makes sense that the rest would get involved as well, but maybe not in the way that they did. But either way, it felt much less special when it stopped being about the connection between the two main characters, and more about their group friendship. It was only interesting when it was about the FMC's regrets of not being able to save a person who had a special bond with her.
IDK. Maybe their group friendship just didn't feel strong enough for me to justify the side-characters' involvement-- with the exception of one.

Nail in the coffin: I remember one of the last scenes was them in a van with the entire group reminiscing the past and saying that they were rooting for the two MCs relationship back then... in front of his husband, with that husband himself- as he carries their baby- saying the same gosh darn thing. It felt like a bunch of diehard fans bringing up an Idol's past BF in front of her cuckold.
And with that, Orange became one of my biggest Anime disappointments. It hurt me because I know that if the story kept focusing on the 2 MC's alone- with only the necessary support character being around-, it'll be one of my favorite Anime stories of all time.

I'm actually on the 3-step program myself: love -> hate -> love to hate. Just kidding.

If something I watch or read has a lot of used ideas and feels like a copy-paste story/setting that is based on the main focal points associated with a particular genre (like the average high school rom-com/drama or seasonal isekai story), then I have a tendency to become bored with the material quickly, as it becomes a case of been there, done that.

I remember there was a really popular one several years ago that the ending made everyone hate it. Right at the end it revealed the two mains were brother & sister (I think) and that just caused a volcano to erupt. Maybe it was Orihime, it started with an O.
None for me, fortunately if something gonna be bad it has shown itself to be right away.

I loved the first few episodes of Fruits Basket so much that I thought it was going to be my favorite romance anime of all time, then from the second half of the first season onwards my enjoyment kept declining to the point that now I straight up dislike it. My guess is that I loved how the beginning was very heartwarming, then it became more drama-oriented but the drama just wasn't good.

From hate to love? Kino no Tabi (2003) is the latest anime I tried again after dropping it years ago. Now I understand why it can be considered the best episodic anime of all time, I love the story even though I'm still not a fan of the late 90s-early 2000s style in terms of animation and directing (which is the reason why I dropped it the first time). I can only imagine how amazing a well done modern adaptation could have been, but instead the remake was just barely decent.

Gundam seed and unicorn for the same reason-they didn't understand gundam and after a certain point it became obvious, seed also doesn't understand it's themes but that's another story
The original gundam on the other hand becomes better the more I think about it

the fine line between love and hate—such an intriguing concept! When it comes to anime, there are certainly series and characters that evoke a rollercoaster of emotions.

For me, one anime that shifted my feelings over time is Sword Art Online. Initially, I was captivated by the premise of being trapped in a virtual reality game, and the first few episodes had me hooked. However, as the series progressed, my enthusiasm waned due to some questionable character development and plot choices. The focus drifted away from the virtual world, leading to a mixed bag of feelings.

Hachiman from Oregairu. I dropped the show twice in the past because I didn't like the characters, especially the MC himself. He was too edgy for my liking. I was able to finish the show years later, and able to appreciate his character and role probably because he is portrayed appropriately in the story. He is edgy, but that trait isn't praised in the story and instead he was pushed to change but still be himself. Anwyays I just think his character + role is written well for the story so he's probably even my favorite character of the series by the end of it.

On the opposite story, I genuinely enjoyed Classroom of the Elite when it first aired and was really hoping for a continuation. Unfortunately I think time has gone too long when 2nd season aired, and I see the story and characters differently by then. The story felt silly despite presenting itself seriously, and the characters annoyed me.

Hikaru no go. I started show with low expectations. Like what you can expect from a show about high schooler playing a board game called go for like 70 episodes but boy I was wrong. In the end, it became my favorite anime of all time.

86 started off a mildly generic, but for the most part decent show, but then season 2 absolutely ruined it by undoing the death of the characters at the end of season 1, and then the whole plot basically just repeated itself, they didn't show Vladelina, there was an annoying child character... It was a total catastrophe.

I loved the first part of 86, but the beginning of part 2 made me hate the show as whole.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

Love and hate aren't similar feelings. But love can quickly change to hate with 1 wrong step.

Very good example: Oreimo. I loved that anime but the ending fucking sucked
and I started to hate that show.

I used to be a huge Kyo Kara Maoh fan but then what the author and editor did with the manga and LN made me hate the series as a whole including the anime. Both bitches simp to Wolfram to the point they need to degrade all other characters to make Wolfram look like the hero in the end and whine and complain about how bad other characters are and how Wolfram is the only cool and decent character in the series.

Oh, just adding another one which is actually the most drastic change for me. I really disliked Kei Shindou from Ef: A Tale of Memories anime, but after reading the VN and see her portrayed differently and getting her own story, I turned to really like her. Her route was on the top 3 for me and wasn't adapted into the anime. So my view on the character changed to the better, but my view on the anime got worsen because of that change on Kei.

@Maou_heika Haven't watched this show, but when writers start basically grossly rewriting or breaking story for the sake of certain characters, it's never a good idea. In theory, this was even one of the main problems that killed Oshi no Ko final.

It was a perfectly enjoyable Sibling ecchi romcom... then the after credits scene of the last episode ruined it all with the revelation that they are in fact not blood related.
If they had been honest about it from the beginning, I wouldn't have minded, I'm not opposed to stepsibling romances, but its the fact that they spent an entire season pretending that they were blood related, just to pull the rug out from under our feet at the last possible moment, that left a sour taste in my mouth. Why? I mean anyone who made it to the after credits scene of the last episode was clearly already ok with-it being blood related, anyone who would be offended by it would have long since dropped the show. I'm sure it was because of some political bs that made them have to do it, but don't lie about it for 12 episodes, just be upfront about it.

You seemingly didn't recognize its purpose then, which was to show how relationships can become toxic and how jealousy can become lethal.

@Zarutaku To be more precise, how serious and fatal problems can emotional manipulation and abuse in relationships lead to. Especially from the male side.
