Is it funny telling someone you watch dubs over the original voice acting?

When someone asks what your language preference in anime is. You say dubs and they act shocked and so they ask why. Then you say you don't couldn't care less about the talent of Japanese VAs because to your own ears it sounds the same because the VAs are speaking a language you don't understand or care about. Plus overall you don't hold voice acting in high regard and if you had to watch subtitles you would mute the sound because silence is preferable. Basically this is the conversation I had with someone when they asked whether I watch anime in Japanese or English (or any other language for that matter). They always give you a weird look when you say you listen to anything other than Japanese.

Also has anyone tried watching anime in other languages other than Japanese or English? What a about Spanish? French? German dubs?

Everyone has their own preferences, after all.

"Also has anyone tried watching anime in other languages other than Japanese or English?"

Yeah, some Finnish dubs. They were all my childhood anime expect for Digimon Adventure.

I'm watching in Japanese, English or German depending on my mood and what's available.

It boils down to preference in the end as Serafos said.

Nah.

Sometimes i prefer Subs, sometimes Dubs. It really depends on the individual Anime.

Also German Dubs are mostly quite high in quality (as the german dubbing industry is quite large because Germany dubs EVERYTHING) and therefore enjoyable.

"When someone asks what your language preference in anime is"

No one asked me so far and I don't think that's what people normally ask. And "dubs" is an absurd answer for this question as all animation is dubbed, what you mean is English dubbed.

I can respect most of what you said, but "overall you don't hold voice acting in high regard" is where it goes off the deep end.

So you don't care about dub voice acting, either..? No matter how awkward and atrocious it gets?

To me that's only one step away from "I don't care about the dialogue, I don't need to understand what they're saying."

as a sub and dub watcher, i can honestly say that i enjoy listening to dubs more. it has nothing to do with the passion and skill level of japanese va's...i just get annoyed at how high pitched the female voices are, and how exaggerated the japanese voice acting sounds. are the japanese subs more accurate than dubs? yes for the most part...but in the end it still has to be translated to english...meaning its still not "accurate". so with that being said...id rather just watch dubs if available

People getting so upset over one's audio preferences is the most petty shit imaginable and this is coming from someone who used to be a sub elitist. There are way more important things to get upset about and what language someone likes to listen to is one of the least important things ever.

Not really, I mean it is people's native language nothing wrong with it, if they have a problem they should not be around you.

@LSSJ_Gaming What if someone's audio preference is having an 8 year old girl perform sexual ASMR to them over Discord because they threatened to kill themself if she didn't? I wouldn't call it petty to be upset by that.

I tend to watch the same shows twice in both English and Japanese these days because of my Autistic hyperfixations. I find that I can come to a better understanding of how certain decisions in the translation process were made by watching both audio tracks rather than solely watching with subtitles or solely watching dubbed since subtitle translations and dub translations tend to actually have minor differences.

Some dubs are genuinely really good. I often switch between them when available and decide which to stick with after a few episodes. But it's on a case-by-case basis at the end of the day. I preferred the dub for the Fruits Basket remake and Evangelion, for example. I also really liked the dub for HxH. That said, I mostly watch sub.

I prefer English dubs when possible.

1, I can only speak and understand English. I have tried a few different languages but it has never worked. Some people are naturally bad at math or sciences. I am bad when it comes to other languages. This has always been the case, even going back to middle school.

2, I have found that my ability to immerse myself in a title increases if I can understand what they are saying.

3, It infuriates the hardcore super fans who are like "TrUe fAnS ONLY WaTcH SuBs". The moment these people pop their heads up, I know who I am gonna block. I don't need that toxicity in my life.

4, The Dubbing process has gotten better over the last 30+ years, as a whole. That's not to say that modern dubs are automatically better than the old ones, nor is it to say that a modern dub is going to be automatically good, but it does improve the likelihood of a good or better dub.

As a french person, I like both subs and dubs, but for dubs, it really depends on the anime because french dubs are like two sides of the same coin: one side with the good stuff (Tokyo Ghoul, Attack on Titan, Black Lagoon, etc), and the other side being either cringe or extremely bad in my opinion (Bleach, and literally all of the "inferior" isekais).

It is also weird to me to think that people who don't understand french will usually say that the voice acting sucks despite it sounding normal or good to us, but I don't really care to be honest, I find it funny to see/hear the different opinions of people worldwide.

Note: I haven't watched any of the dubbed Fall 2024 animes yet, but I've heard Dandadan and Ranma got dubbed very well. (Probably because it's Netflix)

It's just preference. I prefer Japanese because the voice acting is better, but I have a friend who only watches dubbed anime and we get along great! We have anime discussions and we don't fight over subbed vs. dubbed. That's just stupid. Who cares how someone else prefers to watch anime? It doesn't affect you if someone else likes to watch anime differently then you unless you're going to sit down and watch something with them. Also, I watch donghua (which is technically not anime, but IS animated) so I often hear Chinese. Have also watched an anime in Korean because for some reason they dubbed it in Korean first even though it was Japanese anime... I think it was a Naruto movie like YEARS ago.

eng dub is superior, always has been always will be, who cares what some sweaty snivveling little shit bag who wasn'nt even born when i started watching anime thinks

that said i do watch some in sub if for example it is set in historical feudal Japan with samurai & ninjas

example - im watching shippuden right now in sub, but will always watch cowboy bebop in eng dub for Steve Blums iconic signature performance as spike

and secondly anime is easier to watch & digest in english dub

I mainly watch english dubs, I dont have a lot of time after work to relax so i like to play a game while I watch something after I do chores. It makes it easier on me when I can understand what they are saying without having to read at the same time. I do still watch subs, but if a dub is available I am probably watching that. People that talk down to you for watching dubs are just elitists. Luckily, I have been noticing less of those types of people more so lately.

@adelgirl they are not elitists far from it ...they're just misguided noobs who got conditioned somehow into thinking that sub is the right way to watch anime.. its actually laughable

i guarantee you anyone who would talk down to u for that would have k-on, HxH, or some other generic post 2008 anime in their favs and that is just pathetic..also these same people would give no game no life a 10/10 let that sink in for a moment

Who are those people that you're taking to who have such strong and forceful opinions about your watching preferences? That conversation sounds really, really enjoyable.
There are English dubs that are done really well, some even better than the Japanese, and then there are English dubs that can ruin the entire experience. With most series, I'll try an episode in each and decide which one I prefer. It's really not that hard.

I prefer English dubs unless it's really bad or it changes things too drastically compared to the Japanese version. Kind of why I prefer the VIZ dub and Japanese version of Sailor Moon compared to the 90s English dub.

@fbjim

that is not necessarily true. SungWon Cho (ProZD) for example has been acting professionally since 2015 and he got his start making comedy skits online. He gets consistent roles because he's a talented voice actor. Pay is more a union vs non-union thing and the issue more lies within the anime dubbing industry cheaping out, with most popular dubbing studios like Crunchyroll not using union contracts. Netflix is one of the few distributors that I believe do union contracts for anime dubs. You also do realize in order for a lot of actors to get those big Hollywood gigs they have to start somewhere right?

Also no one forced you to respond to a guy who randomly came up and started talking about an abusive sexual relationship between an adult man and an 8 year old who didn't even know what sex was (don't worry, I educated her)

@LSSJ_Gaming if the industry did start somehow deciding to pay SAG-AFTRA wages for VO work, do you think any of those youtubers keep their jobs, or does the industry actually start hiring the people who have proven that they are worth that money
