I'm trying to get into anime but I want to find out, how does everyone else discover anime, both new and old? Do you go with what you know is popular, or just find whatever looks cool?

I usually search from MAL and Google for new anime. I don't care about the popularity. I just read the synopses and check the genre/theme tags.

I was basically ignorant about anime, it was my brother who insisted to watch and I got hooked up. While some can watch everything, I just cannot gravitate toward every genre even if I give it a try. Most of the anime I watched like 70% was recommended by my brother and another 25% one of my friend encouraged me.

But it takes time to find out which genre you gravitate to most. I personally read bunch of reviews, NGL stalked myanimelist and tags, see the stack, etc. And just watch what interests you most. Maybe.

when I started watching anime I watched reccomendations, I had a phase of watching AMV and MEPS, so I watched anime with hot guys from those [XD], I skimmed through genre's and started watching seasonals at the time. Right now most of my planned list is made of hundreds of anime from seasons below 2018 - I looked through the archive of every season there is, I like both what's popular and what's obscure so I watch mostly everything I find to my liking - looking through profiles of people could be useful for people who didn't watch much anime

@TheHyperStar Second what @Condoms said. It's honestly fun to do, if you're okay with a lot of trial/error BS (There are a LOT of ways to prompt an AI, with very few objectively wrong ways to do so), along with the AI sometimes completely misunderstanding what the hell it's talking about, though that part's just one of the growing pains of AI in general. But even just for the purposes of demonstration (I used Google's AI Studio for this, since it's free for anyone with a Google account, which is basically everybody on MAL), I found a random obscure anime that seems like the goofy sort of thing I'd like.

Will Tondemo Senshi Muteking live up to Google Gemini's description? Probably not, but I sure as hell wouldn't have found this without an AI pulling it out from the trash and saying "You say you've looked at every obscure anime, but haven't watched the random Tatsunoko anime about a guy who saves the day with roller-scating?"

I just put in the time, looking at things (which I don't mind doing... usually). MAL and YouTube, mostly.

(Note that I'm only talking about new anime)

I browse MAL's Seasonal Anime list. I read the synopsis and then watch the trailers if it sounds interesting.

Sometimes I just watch one video on YouTube that compiles all (or most) trailers for a season. These usually run an hour or two. I don't have a specific channel to recommend... you'll have to search around on YouTube for a bit.

Speaking of YouTube, I check out Mother's Basement when he uploads a "Ones To Watch" video, in the first few weeks of every season. Here's one for the previous season: Fall 2024. It's not that I agree with his tastes, but I like that he covers a decent number of shows with a lot of variety.

If you don't like his taste or style, you can try a few other channels to find a creator that posts similar videos.

I open the Seasonal Anime tab, I download everything from the list, then I pick randomly an anime to watch. Even those obscure, shitty shows that nobody watches (for a good reason).

I watch a lot of videos and video-essays about anime and it's story, so I end up discovering names there.
In my social media I tend to put myself in circles that people will namedrop a lot of anime or post random gifs/images of those.
For seasonal anime, I just get those from people posting about them in social media.

  • "Best of Genre" lists all and club favorites on MAL
  • Other work by directors, original creators and art directors of shows I liked
  • "Best of year" and "Best of all time" lists which have overlap with previously liked shows
  • A handful of individuals whom I know share my taste, mostly on MAL
  • Anidb.net queries, as that server meets my taste far better than MAl. A high ranking means something there, beyond hyped shounens.
  • "I feel lucky" watches of material needed to complete MAL Badges as a random factor
I do not use social media or MAL scores, both have a bias on genres I do not like (sports, shounen, PG-13 ecchi).

Hmmm right now I do that in both ways -> Anime randomizers ex. random lextorias and go by the anime title which catch my attention by visual key [back when I started watching first stuff I was also choosing based on visual keys, but I was scrolling through titles available at the site].

Second [Donghua/Aeni only] -> I click by studio whom animated/produced a certain anime, ex. Girl Downstairs which I watched not so long ago, than I proceeded to other titles from the same studio behind animation and behind producing which seemed to be fun to me, as you would take a look at my recent anime history that's how I choosed them.

Most of the series that I add to my list come from picking out titles that interest me from the seasonal lineup, and recommendations off of other series I liked. Popular doesn't necessarily mean good or that you'll enjoy it, but a high-rated anime from your favorite genre can be a good starting point.

In fact, let's take my latest (Non-short, non-sequel) completed anime and get where I learned about them:

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha:
Honestly, I've known about Nanoha for years, so likely learned about it a decade ago on Facebook or from YouTube videos. What made me want to watch it now, however, was from it being mentioned in a video about the history of Visual Novel adaptations.
Kokkoku:
Learned about it because it was in all "Best OP of the year" videos from 2018, though everyone said that the anime sucked. Until I went and read it's synopsis on MAL and saw that it was interesting and it's score wasn't that low.
Mahou Shoujo Magical Destroyers:
I actually don't remember, lol.
Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online II:
MAL reminded me, since I watched the first season back in 2018.
Mahoutsukai Tai:
I knew about it via the Shamanic Princess special episode, and also because for the last few months a fuckton of "retro anime" profiles have been spamming stuff about it.
16bit Sensation: Another Layer
Knew about it from back then from some SNS posts, but only got interesting in seeing it after recently a Twitter friend posted some things about it.
Tsuma Shougakusei ni Naru
Twitter/Facebook
A Kite
That Mezzo Forte video everyone and their mothers have seen reposted a thousand times.
Wata no Kuni Hoshi
Twitter "retro anime" profiles.

Outlanders
Twitter "retro anime" profiles.
Bikini Warriors
From a video of episode 1 being posted on Facebook many years ago.
Decided to watch it this years because of the Bikini Armor guy from this forum.
Eikoku Koi Monogatari Emma
Discovered it years ago from likely either a MAL/Crunchyroll social media post talking about the only other anime with the same tags as "Arte" was this.
Decided to watch it this year because it was likely mentioned in a Twitter thread (And also had a low episode count).

Look at sorted anime by rank on MAL. I do this when I run out of seasonal anime EPs. Right now I'm watching Initial D.
Look at seasonal anime list, usually only a few pick my interest.

at the beginning, i searched in google best animes abt "___", in the blank i place what i was looking for. After that, i found mal and started watching the animes in the top 100. After that sometimes in twitter i see ppl posting clips of certain anime and if they interest me, i add them on my ptw. Nowadays, i just see what my other mal friends are watching and if it interests me, i add it to my list. I also search in the database and i often find shows i might end up watching.

i used to watch seasonal anime weekly but i don’t do that now i prefer to wait till it’s over or at least more than half way thru to binge so i usually browse by season to find new anime to watch (those that i didn’t know about/not already on my PTW)

and interest stacks are so much useful & fun to browse thru!

oh and someone mentioned user profiles — i do this too!! when i see someone with a similar vibe to mine in the forums i tend to explore their list & i more or less always find something new to add to my PTW
