Yes, I watch cartoons as well as anime. I recently-ish watched X-Men: The Animated Series (and Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Fantastic Four, and other loosely connected "MAU" stuff) for the first time, and finished that off with X-Men '97. I'm technically in the middle of watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, but it's been months since I last watched it. Soon-ish (whenever that will be) I plan on watching Adventure Time and the DCAU (Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League, and more). I also plan on watching the second season of My Adventures with Superman at some point. Eventually I'd like to watch Harley Quinn. I'll watch Invincible season 3 and Creature Commandos when they come out. Maybe I'll re-watch The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and Gravity Falls at some point (especially the latter since I bought The Book of Bill). I'll eventually re-watch Castlevania since I've only seen the first season and want to see the rest. I've been planning on re-watching Avatar: The Last Airbender since last year but haven't gotten around to it yet (this used to be my favourite thing ever for quite some time, at least until I watched Gurren Lagann, and then that was my favourite until I watched K-ON!, which has remained my favourite thing ever since). There's also The Boondocks, which I've been planning to watch for years. If my younger sister comes over anytime soon, we could probably re-watch Chowder together. Actually, maybe we could re-watch Winx Club, 6teen, and Totally Spies! together (I know they're a fan of the latter two... they like to joke about the naked skydiving incident). And of course, it goes without saying I am looking forward to Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
It's strange to think only some years ago I was in that edgy anime elitist phase where I basically rejected all cartoons and any animation that wasn't from Japan (it was every bit as cringey as it sounds). How much of that attitude was a natural part of that phase, and how much of it was influenced by other factors? You see, I used to know a guy who was really into watching cartoons, but he rejected anime and any animation not made in the West. A reversal of what I was at the time, basically. I think maybe a part of me, in my immature youth, acted out of spite to his aversion to anime. Oh, he hates anime, does he? Well, I will hate cartoons then! Ugh, it was all so very silly! The fact he was an idiot certainly didn't help; he claimed Inferno Cop was a rip-off of Ghost Rider... somehow. He's probably the only person in the world to have ever thought that. Don't get me started on what he thought about Gundam and Gurren Lagann. According to him, all big robots are a rip-off of Transformers... despite Gundam coming out first. They're not even remotely the same anyway! Mecha have pilots! Transformers don't have pilots! He wasn't the only guy I had trouble with at that time, there was also a teacher who was convinced anime was nothing more than a phase and not "real" art. To the surprise of no one, he didn't know about any anime prior to the 2010s existing... and he was supposed to teach us the history of animation! He watered it down to just the history of Disney and a few other Western works before that! I knew more about animation history than he did. Maybe this was a blessing in disguise. Meeting him probably helped me see how stupid elitists are. It's why I've since been trying to move away from that kind of mindset. Gods, my time in college was so bad. The people who actually liked anime? They didn't watch much of it. This one anime fan there didn't even know what Steins;Gate was until I introduced it to him! Fucking Steins;Gate! Only one of the most popular anime of all time! Something every anime fan has seen! If there were ever a plus side, it would be the fact one of the girls there was a fan of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. I wonder how she's doing now? There was a DBZ fanboy too but he was pretty chill and friendly. Overall, that was a very difficult point of my life, to put it mildly. That's to say nothing of the fact that I was in a very dark place mentally back then and was thinking of suicide. For better or worse, that never came to pass. But look at me now, enjoying both cartoons and anime! Now, of course, anime is way better overall, but there are some great cartoons too. ATLA is a masterpiece. If you've seen my score distribution here on MAL, you'd know I don't use that term lightly. If I consider anime better overall and yet still only give so few a 10/10, you can imagine how much rarer it is for me to give a cartoon a 10/10.
Shit, I was rambling again... |
