Those of you with ADHD, how do you watch your anime?

Personally for me, I need to take constant breaks during episodes due to how much effort I have to exert just to be able to focus for like 10 minutes. I begin to disassociate without even realising, so often times, I'm replaying the same exact scene like 5 times in a row, so an average 20 minute episode does take me one hour.

Anything that's not ADHD friendly, it's an instant drop, even if the show is an objective masterpiece. (Tamati Galaxy)

Serial Experiments Lain was a very ADHD friendly experience because of the lack of dialogue and how much breathing space I had to actually think.

When I was early into my Naruto watching days, I used to write down what happened after each episode just to make sure I didn't fall victim to my ADHD, but I stopped doing this lmao. Now I have honed my brain in a way to keep on top of things when I watch an episode, like how you have multiple tabs open when using the internet, I kinda do that with my brain when wathing an episode, this has been a game changer, so sometimes I'm able to take 40 mins instead of 60.

(*Let me clarify for those that just don't get ADHD: ADHD is not something you can fix. It's not a choice, and it's certainly not a hoax lmao. And I don't need or want advice, I'm simply trying to see what it like for other people who may have it too, hope this helps clear things up. If you don't get ADHD, that's fine, just dont make BS claims about it*)

Firstly, there's no such thing as an "objective masterpiece". The Internet fooled you.
Secondly... 10 minutes is just not a good attention span for anime. Work on improving it to 20 minutes at least. My honest suggestion is to use the waste energy for some sort of serious work.
Thirdly, if you still can't continue after one or two episodes, stop. Get that fresh air. You picked a pretty bad genre in terms of length too, especially with these early battle shonen that have hundreds and hundreds of episodes.

I appreciate that, but i kinda disagree with all you said. I wasn’t looking for advice, but thanks anyway

@NoelleIsSleepy 2x speed is literally the worst advice you could give to OP. Lack of attention span is not related to processing speed.

@phantom346 Wouldn't advise that either. I have some experience in psychiatry and those drugs are literally the worst thing to administer. They slow you down so much you feel like a zombie.

@TheMechaManiac sir, I did specify that it would only work for some people with adhd... but for those some, putting videos on 1.5-2x speed will maintain your attention and therefore help you process the info better. I'm not alone in this lol

yeah no i get the same thing, thats why i dropp so much or stop half way through or two epsiodes till the end lol its a really bad habit, but its hard for me to remember shows. The only thing that helps is when I take a break and I come back thinking i forget everything, the memories come back after being triggered by the new ep and it all clicks.

@NoelleIsSleepy LMAOOOO I do watch youtube videos on 1.5X speed but with anime I actually want to watch it properly, I feel guilty if I do it with anime I really don't know if that will help me as i'll just miss out on plot details etc.

Usually if something is making me zone out and re-watch scenes cuz i didn't get them it means it's not holding my interest enough to overide my brain's hyperactivity so i'll just drop stuff like that

Also Lain is the opposite for me, the slow pace just makes my brain wanna scream in horror, it has too much breathing space to think and i'll end up going from the series to "does the universe have a beginning and end?" type of questions

ADHD friendly for me would be fast paced action, suspence, and/or comedy, stuff where i'm staring at the screan the same way a cat would stare at a laser light, of course that alone isn't enough, it also needs a good story and characetrs to back it up, but i also don't feel i need breathign space to think, my brain literally has a hyperdrive, it can do all the character analisys theorizing in a splis second, i might still need to get up inbetween eps to let off extra energy, but the story manages to keep my attention for those 20 min, but hey, to each their own

ultimately anything where i can connect to the characters will do that for me, just that with slower paced stuff i can only handle 1 ep at a time compare to 5 eps at a time of something full of cliffhangers making me scream "what happens next!!!!??????????"

I'm not diagnosed with ADHD, but I do experience many symptoms. In most cases I just force my way through an episode or film. These days I've even started to break films into sequences and watch it like I would watch an actual show.

Also I've never actually experienced an ADHD "friendly" show or film. I don't think it even exists. Anime without any dialogue for instance just make my ADHD worse. I can't concentrate at all if I don't hear any voices coming from the screen, as I'd lose attention immediately.

@DigiCat Yes, but I zone out with EVERYTHING. Literally. ADHD dosen't care how interested you are in something. My interest in anime is so much so that I genuinely can't imagine life without it.

I guess people with ADHD experience it in different ways, but let me paint a picture for you: I have to make tense faces just to be able to focus, or clench my fists or intertwine my hands firmly - all this helps me grab and keep hold of attention.

Too many things going on at once leaves me overwhelmed, this is why I don't hang out in big groups.

@SimplyBrazen That's fair enough. Ofc, 'ADHD Friendly Anime' is just a term I made up, there's no way to actually describe it lmao. Just anything that dosent leave you in a state of overwhelm 2 seconds into watching it.

You could try to watch anime at slower speed if they are too fast for you. Maybe then you don't need to replay the same scene multiple times.

Hello there! At first it surprised me that people were still giving you advice despite explicitly saying NOT to do so. Then it dawned on me that I am NOT surprised because either people don't care, don't read, or read the title and read just a couple of sentences of what you are saying and then reply.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 7. I agree wholeheartedly with you; this is something that just doesn't "go away". I find myself wandering in thought if a show is more cinematically focused. For example, I am watching Tamayura, and while I certainly feel and understand that is absolutely gorgeous and has good vibes all around, I cannot help but start thinking about stuff that is going on in my life, or worrying about the smallest things like what I am going to eat later today. In contrast, if I am watching a show with a lot of action, I actually end up binge-watching it most of the time! I think that is the dichotomy of ADHD; if something isn't interesting to us, we get distracted. If something IS interesting to us, you bet we will hyper-focus on it for 7-8 hours at a time (Flashback to me playing RuneScape for 12-13 hours on end as a kid lol).

Do you find yourself having to force yourself through watching a show or do you drop them? For me, I have experienced both. If I have just enough interest in the story or characters at end, I will feel like I have to conjure up a ton of energy and focus to finish the show in its entirety. On the other hand, I have dropped shows that I just really couldn't care less about what the story is or who the characters are because either I can't identify with them or I just don't plain care.

I used to mentally schedule a break very 5 mins or so. I'd wait for a good spot in the dialogue or action, pause, get up to wander/scroll social media/etc., then come back to watch some more. If I was into what was going on in the show, I'd let it run longer, but the fact that I gave myself "permission" to stop often made me feel less guilty and stressed when I did take a break.

Then I learned how to knit and crochet. Having something to do with my hands while watching a show really improved my attention and now I can watch whole episodes without pausing. Sitting through a movie is still a challenge though, but baby steps y'know?

@RepentInReprise Reading this was very comforting, it's awesome that someone shares a very similar experience to me. Yeah, I feel like so many people just don't understand ADHD at all, most of the people around me accept my ADHD but because they're neurotypical, they still misinterpret me at times, which is okay, as long as they don't feel the need to 'fix' me, then I feel fine around them. I'm genuinely shocked at some of these comments too.

So when I'm watching anime, I often have to make a tense face or clench my fists or do some sort of ritual so that I can finally find the 'attention and focus' section of my brain. If I start to get an itchy nose, need to use the bathroom, heck, even if my clothes feel a bit tight, it completely distracts me, and next thing I know, I've completely put the episode on hold for like 30 minutes cos I'm on my phone now, doom scrolling on instagram.

I love pure action scenes. For some reason, my brain loves this part so much.

I'm constantly disassociating. It's hard to explain this, but most of the time, if im not actively doing a ritual to focus, I forget that my eyes are open and it feels like im blind, but not a 'everything is pitch black' blind, but more like, I just dont realise that im awake.

I also have dropped shows like Steins Gate, or NGE, if my brain dosent like the dialgoue, I just can't do it. It takes me a while to process speech. I have a hard time following intructions. I've gotten better as I now just simplify things to fit my own understanding, like when they use some complicated explaination for a technique.

Reading's never been a problem for me. When I read a novel, I can use my imagination to build what the world/characters/etc. looks like in my mind from the descriptions and that keeps me engaged. Manga is much faster to read so I don't really have time to get bored lol

@SilentVinyl I can definitely say this method seems helpful, but in my specific case? No, because I often take longer to understand dialogue. I replay scenes where they're just talking a lot, I have to, need to, get it right.

As an ADHD-er I had the opposite effect with Lain and The Tatami Galaxy lol.

My problem rather lies when to start watching stuff or watching stuff uninterrupted. I often have days where I don't watch anything despìte me wanting to, or times where I have too many series at the same time and I cannot decide which ones or when to start. The time it takes me to complete a series is either very short or veeeeery long as I sometimes can get hyperfocused with a series.

@Rabnawaz2002 You can't get rid of it, but you can train yourself to focus more on the present. Have an open mind and search about meditation. I have ADHD and it helped me.

I don't have ADHD, but sometime do have short attention span and it doesn't really affect my anime watching at least.
