Crunchyroll announced that they acquired the television version of the Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction anime movie on Monday. The television re-edit will span 18 episodes and include new scenes. Crunchyroll will release the episodes weekly beginning May 23 at 8:00 p.m. Pacific Time (11:00 p.m. EDT) in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, Indian subcontinent, and Southeast Asia.

Produced by Production +h., the first part of the two-part anime movie adaptation of Inio Asano's sci-fi drama manga premiered on March 22. The second part will open in theaters on May 24.

Big Comic Spirits began serializing the manga in April 2014, which ended its eight-year serialization in February 2022. Shogakukan published the 12th and final volume the following March.

VIZ Media licensed the manga in English in July 2017 and released the 12th and final volume in April 2023.

Synopsis
As the world is threatened by the sudden appearance of a mysterious alien mothership, best friends Kadode Koyama and Oran "Ontan" Nakagawa carry on about their high school life. But as they grow up, they face existential questions, learning adulthood’s complexities and that the true threat may not be from above. (Source: Crunchyroll)

Will MAL have a separate entry for this, considering it will have new content?

Nice, and hopefully it can get the Sand Land treatment and get a dub immediately.

I still feel like it'll be condensed... couldn't they just do a full series with more episodes?
I doubt 18 episodes is enough, lol.

Exactly. So it still won't be a full adaptation, lol. What a shame.

@waalex11 18 episodes of 20 minutes is more runtime than the original 2 hours per movie, so it will be a fuller adaptation than the movies.

I picture it as the 18 episodes being the actual series and the 2 movies serving as recap movies, but this time it’s as if they released the recap movies before the tv series lol. Once the 18 episodes come out, there really isn’t any point in watching the 2 movies since the 18 episodes will have more content adapted.

@malvarez1 Not only them, this is the third anime in the last couple of years, which is a TV version of an originally theatrical anime. There are probably even more of them, that is, this is a kind of reverse version of recap movies.

My favourite manga, and I thought I will be able to see the adaptation only in a few years, it made my day

I'ma be honest, I'm worried about the pacing. It's a 100-chapter manga that's full of dialogue, don't know if 2 movies/18 episodes can do it justice.

This should've been a TV version since the start. Still not sure why they went with the movie format to begin with lol.

@waalex11 At 18 eps, they'll be adapting 5-6 chapters of the manga per ep, which is about average for modern anime productions.

@Phlaryx It would be awesome if the movies had their own story
