This is to the mecha anime what Samurai Flamenco was to tokusatsu.

Polyglot robot surprises German officer.

U.S. are waterboarding Isami, he's traumatised after saving the day twice. It was Smith who wanted to be a hero since childhood.

The show is going the Bayformers-style route with Bravern collaborating with Earth military not an Ultraman-style route where Isami has to hide Bravern.

Novels I have read/am reading pending approval: since November 10 2022

Could this be the remake of "The Legend of the Blue Wolves"?

It's only January but I already know what will be the best ED song of 2024. BL vibe is so real that can't even be canceled by "no homo".
But let's pretend that elephant in the room doesn't exist and talk about something else. This is borderline parody, I wish this anime get weekend morning timeslot (in Japan) to make the joke even more funny, but I guess some parents might not want their kids to watch two guys singing shirtless while touching each other's hands.

I really love episode 2. So far the show balances off being a standard more mature spiritual successor to a thing japanese anime fans may have watched as a kid. While also giving the spirit of it kinda being approachable for anime fans in their teen even tween years. The show really does make sense in justifying the clickbait premise of being a real robot show turned into a super robot one with how Bravern is pretty much the Ultraman of this universe with episode 1 making callbacks to Ultraman being red or blue musclebound heroes.

I'm really interested in how this show will expand towards the aspects shown off in the opening and at the end of the episode. Setting up a dynamic with Bravern working with the military mecha pilots. Smith's potential arc of discovering his own power alongside Isami. More pilots being introduced. And the mysterious white haired girl shown off at the beginning and end of the episode. Potentially being a pilot of Superbia.

I would be amazed if this show somehow manages to put all of these expansive plot threads within only 12 episodes. But i genuinely hope that this anime really isn't only 12 episodes. I don't want this anime to have a SSSS Gridman problem where we really do not have time to get the viewer warmed up to the setting and characters. Even if I really liked the show, I just think these kinds of stories really need breathing room for potential storylines to happen naturally.

this is hysterical. they keep finding little goofy details to add, like the logo behind bravern is a literal hologram he's projecting out of his back. the real mecha people are completely baffled by everything bravern says or does while he just ignores anything not relevant to a super robot, like physics.

I'm half way through this episode and I'm thinking that this is either Obari reckoning with himself (which I would prefer, but let's get real) or just a weird joke about to robots being chuuni and bored and using humanity as playthings ina big silly game. Knowing that Obari made Gravion and he's using Suzumura again in this, It's probably the later and the way the are tones are colliding is just throwing me in all directions. I wish this was more straight faced and less of an awkward comedy in the face of suffering and death.

Edit: Nope, It's just Obari's big coming out party, Finally telling us what we've always known. He's mechasexual.
It's not real robot, It's not super robot. It's porn.

God bless you buddy.

@HeroicGangster
This is just my theory, but I think she is actually Superbia (or Superbia's "core" or whatever) and Smith will get to pilot her eventually.
As in - it changed into a more human form in order to attempt a power-up like Bravern has with Isami. It will pull Smith to the alien side by manipulating his wishes of being a hero, but after fighting Bravern a few times they will both go back to eath's side. That would be a pretty standard plot for this type of show after all.

@Blitzar that was my thought as well. More specifically, it being Superbia I'm pretty confident about, but I do think she will be piloted too.

This might just become the sleeper hit of the season. Still not sure exactly what to expect from it, but very much enjoying the ride so far.

One thing that surprised me was Heidemarie speaking in pretty much fluent German, though with a bit of a weird accent. I'd think not quite native German level, but pretty close. Now compare that to the average English used in anime....
(And what language was Bravern speaking right after that? I have honestly no clue....)

You need to stop caring about what other people do and don't do. It has been like this for years. It certainly won't get more attention by whining like a spoiled brat.
Praise the show, enjoy it, spread the word. That will do. Who cares if it won't. Stop caring about meaningless numbers.

The show is great fun indeed.

numbers aren't meaningless - it's numbers that got Bang Bravern picked up by CR in the first place. Now that's a contender for AOTY already after two episodes

I`ll watch it all for my resparkled mecha love, but it`s actually painfully cringie. First they torture a man possibly connected to the robot that they can`t defeat WHILE IT STILL THERE and than tv shows it torture betwean bang bang bang and robot`s sexual allusions. And after that we are shown torture ptsd right beside robot`s romcom allusions. And if all it wasn`t enough they make MC nude at the end. I think we can expect some scenes where Bravern reference sport games during enemy genociding some city or rape attempt on human side

@Axelucard
And that's the reason I'm dropping this. Logic was already thrown out the window when they started mixing a super robot deus ex machina into a real robots setting right off the bat. I know there are people supid enough out there to antagonize someone who saved them, but come on, you can't convince me a well regulated joint army would act like this in such a lopsided situation.
Now in preparation for the next episode, we have a humanoid pretty girl on the beach who got ejected from the enemy robot, even though Bravern just explained that they were an inorganic life form, I'm not going to bother watching the nonsense they're going to pull out of their ass to explain this while they sidestep the reasoning for the torture in this episode.

This show is just too much fun! Part of me is just thinking "WTF were the writers and director thinking?" But the courage of Bravern to launch into a monologue in front of all the bigwigs about his erotic relationship with Isami just made my day. Keep the absurdity up, Mr. Bravern! I might just give my anime of the season to you!

This show is absolutely hatstand, in more ways than one.

It has probably the most realistic portrayal of what would happen if a giant robot came from space and saved earth alongside a human though... of course the authorities would arrest and torture the human for information and try to control him and the robot 'for the greater good', naturally.

The waterboarding interrogation is grim as hell, and then it bounces out to Bravern gaying out over finding his true lo... pilot, or getting roasted by the humans for being weak while getting tossed around by Superbia.

Is it parody? Is it just good old classic cheese? Who cares? It's fun and funny, job's a good'un.

So far it is fun. I had expected a lot less. Cygames seem to be pretty good when it comes to anime with original story. At least I think this story is original for the anime. I liked Shingeki no Bahamut as well. But I think some mobile game adaptions that adapt the game story ... felt more boring. And stuff that gets repetitive (like Uma Musume) is less fun in the later seasons.

Had expected it to maybe get a bit weird like Daimidaler. But it feels more serious ... with comedy elements. Like a Gridman/Dynazenon feeling (hopefully not as bad as those ner the end later) with comede level a bit like Tiramisu.

I wonder about the other girl. Maybe she will try to be close to Smith a lot - similar like Bravern is obsessed with Isami lol. Maybe in the end someone will just wake up having dreamt the whole stuff? :D Seems like the girl is from the aliens? And maybe some of them have human parts? At least the other super robot (Superbia) seems to have had a kind of personality. (He just could not speak.)

Didn't understant the German completely. The "Danke" at the end of the conversation and the single "Scheiße" from Heidemarie later - easy to understand. The first two lines: Took me a bit to understand the 2nd line. But then Bravern ... starts with something that sounds German (that I still can understand) but then some weird words ...

"Was halten Sie davon?" ("What do you think about this?)
"Das sind doch wieder die Amerikaner, sonst erfindet niemand solches Zeugs." ("That must be the Americans again. Nobody else would make up such stuff.")
"In diesen Tönen müssen wir"

... then I can't understand it anymore. I think he wanted to say something like that: https://m.dict.cc/deutsch-englisch/Nicht+in+diesem+Ton.html
("Töne" is plural of "Ton".)
