One of the most common stereotypes that you hear a lot about straight men is that they think girl-on-girl action is hot or something along the lines of that statement. As a dude, I personally don't actively seek out Yuri content even when it is aimed at a male audience. I just find it to be a bit of a turn-off. Yuri's demographic is a lot more balanced than Yaoi with the main demographic being queer women and straight men just being an additional bonus.

In the case of the Yaoi genre, a lot of those series would always follow a top/bottom dichotomy when it comes to the sexuality of its characters. One of those characters would always be the audience surrogate and the other character would be the object of desire. This is the reason why a huge number of Yaoi is primarily written by women for women.

In the Yuri genre, most series do not provide the option of self-insertion which is why they are not as successful as their counterpart among men at least. Heck, even trashy harems and isekai shows provide that aspect way more easily than the Yuri series. Because of that, we see more harem and isekai garbage being pumped out of the anime industry much more frequently than yuri.

I used to be really against Yuri but now I do not mind it as much. Yuri is very rare in anime where the closest things tend to be close friends like in Demon girl next door.

Yuri is kinda weird as unlike with gay men where there's yaoi (made for women primarily) and bara (made for gay men primarily), yuri is a catchall term for ANYTHING lesbian regardless of demographic. There are shonen yuri, seinen yuri, shoujo yuri, and josei yuri that all fall under the same umbrella term. It's very weird to be honest. Yuri content does tend to be popular with men as heterosexual men have a tendency to fetishize WLW relationships which can be rather uncomfortable.

I personally love yuri stuff. I consume it more in manga form since there aren't a crazy amount of yuri anime out there. Even if the stereotype of yuri only being for men might not be true, there's still plenty of men out there who love yuri. I personally prefer romance involving just pretty girls instead of needing a guy in it. I don't need a self insert, in fact having a boring guy for the girls to fall in love with makes the show worse than if the girls fell in love with each other instead.

A female can still work as a self insert depending on how she's written as well. If you write one of the girls to have a lot of attributes that the male audience can relate to then you get to have cute girls falling in love while also being able to put yourself in their shoes. Win win.

@LSSJ_Gaming

Fetishization isn't a good term to be used in this context. Straight men tend to infantilize lesbian relationships, that's why, you can frequently see claims like 'Yuri is the purest form of love'

@Sanjay63773

Don't get me wrong there is infantilization there but there is an element of fetishization as well. As someone who is a pansexual woman I have seen it firsthand where heterosexual men say girls kissing or making out is hot and it can be a bit uncomfortable for me personally. When applied to anime its whatever I guess, but it gets bad when it applies to real life stuff which it tends to do. It's cuz it is like a bit annoying to see part of my sexuality seen like that y'know.

MagiRevo and Bloom into You are my favorite yuri's. I like romance anime in general and prefer non-ecchi yuri tbh. MagiRevo is definitely in my top 5 favorite romance.

We see a lot more harem and isekai since that tends to bode well with sales/streams while yuri isn't as widely desired as say a "normal" romance anime.

Unfortunately from my experience it goes beyond that. People really don't know how to keep boundaries with that stuff in regards to women.

I like Yuri, but Most yuri out there usually pair a masculine/cool/tomboy/handsome/prince girl x feminine MC girl, I dislike this its basically a dickless dude dating our MC.
I prefer only with pure feminine x feminine relationship, something like Sakura Trick and A Kiss for the Petals. Hehe Boy...

Why would that be weird? No one is overcomplicating it by having different terms for “romance” or “action” or “detective” depending on whether the target audience might be “women” or “gay men”.

I think the term “yuri” and all that is strange enough as it is. No one seems to need a special term for detective stories depending on the gender of the culprit, so why is a different term needed in romance depending on the gender of the love interest?

If one would want to, one could always simply specify it.

I mean a character doesn't need to be male for me to be able to relate to them. I watched Adachi to Shimamura recently and could relate to both main characters in some ways. In terms of pornographic content I find Yuri exceptionally boring though.

Self insert is kind of silly. You can always have opportunity relate with and to empathize with a character's feelings regardless and place yourself in their shoes. I find yuri cute but I havent seen much yet.

I used to shy away from yuri because of girl-on-girl action though I had a feeling I might like it because I have always liked anime which show 2 or more girls being very close friends like Lycoris Recoil or "A certain scientific Railgun". I felt something awakening within me when watching them. Recently I watched Hibike! Euphonium. It was the final trigger. I am now a fan of yuri even though I am new so I haven't watch many. I finished "Bloom into you" yesterday and its probably one of the best romance anime I have ever seen.

I've only really watched Madoka Magica. Granted including the side story, and there is certainly Yuri elements to Madoka but it not overt - which is nice given you know these are school girls so I don't really want there to be more than hand holding and expressing feelings of friendship and stuff it be werid if it went to far.

It's mainly self-insertion material for autogynephiles. Which means, spiritually speaking, its appeal is still quite heterosexual. Get back to me when they make an anime about 300 lb biker chicks scissoring, THAT would be a proper LGBT anime.

Romance between the same gender feels so new and fresh in anime because they deal with a lot of different problems and conflicts. Great potential for emotional stories.

I'm not sure with which one it started for me, but I had a short phase where I binged a lot of yuri anime back to back because I couldn't get enough.
My favourites in this genre so far are Bloom Into You, The Magical Revolution and Adachi to Shimamura. But I haven't found one yet that really blew me away...some day I will watch Revolutionary Girl Utena^^

@Jonas-K I think this answer the OP's question lol.

But in all serious just looking at statistics and the general internet culture surrounding yuri anime shows that men are the main consumers of it, backed up by the fact that more straight men exist in the world then lesbian and bi women.
Go read Berserk and One Piece they're the best thing ever

As a straight guy, i just can never get into Yuri. I've watched sweet/heartwarming yuri and got bored of them and i also tried to more aggressively sexual yuri and still couldn't get into it.

I much prefer a series with just Yuri undertones rather then a full dedicated Yuri romance.

The real question is do women consume yuri content, I've generally only seen men consume anime/manga because it kinda is catered to men? Atleast I feel that as a male, especially when they blur the lines between cgdct and yuri.

Yuri for the pain and seiyuus for the soul.
