imagine a situation where you use a normal word as a derogatory term, then people who are that word for real get offended...and so they say

''this word is a no no, use this one instead''

but then people use the new word as a derogatory word and those people say again

'' this word is a no no, use this one instead''

now image if this thing actually repeats over and over and over and over and over and over again and again and.....

Now imagine if this was actually something real that happened in the real world, for example like maybe how pretty much all medical terms to describe any type of disability or condition have became slur words and people repurposed new words multiple times that also became slurs.

just on top of my head there's at least 100 legit medical terms that have been used in the past 5, 10, 15 years that now can get you cancelled if you even whisper them.

even ''obese'' was proposed as a slur word because fat femminists got offended by their doctor's diagnosis.
even ''femminist'' is slowly becoming a slur word.

Language is a goofy thing.
If we take into consideration that words are merely tools to communicate reality, technically the fuction of saying any "replacement word" serves the same purpose as just saying the word itself, outside of people's feelings.

You can make any word derogatory if you say it in the right way.

yep exactly

imo this is just how its going to be if we value free speech like ok you can say whatever you want but then the meanings get changed around since some people want to abuse it

This reminds me of the Vsauce video about profanity, and the history of how back then things of the supernatural and life and death were the really sensitive words to go by

and now it's more about diseases, particularly mental like "retarded". That was an interesting watch

language evolves its okay, social climate changes its fine

also, whatever comes out of niche twitter communities is not real life okay, algorithms are there to make stuff pop and make u react and get mad alright, so dont worry, obese or feminist are not becoming slurs any time soon

i swear people need to go outside

Well it has happened few times especially in Polish facebook where some people had to change their word for parts of a bike cause could get banned, you might wonder why so I'll explain:
A word Pedał which means Pedal a part of bike is also used offensivly to describe a Gay person x).

There are alot of cases like that in all languages so that's a casual thing when a word is not proper to use anymore.

Paraphrasing Carlin- "The word itself is harmless, it's the context that matters."

Common based take from Scud sama.

Thread locked for breaking the Casual Discussion Guidelines:
7. Controversial/sensitive topics liable to incite rule violations (trolling, flaming, abuse) are no longer allowed.
Even if the topic seems innocent and is made with the best intentions, it only takes one bad actor/troll to begin posting in the thread for it to spiral into a toxic exchange—which we have seen repeatedly, time and time again. As much as we don't want to blanket ban all conversations surrounding these topics, it is too common for posts to be made which are liable to ignite toxic flame wars (at best) and/or genuinely harm an individual's mental state (at worst). Thus, these topics should be discussed in a moderated space designed to handle them. A public forum on an entertainment website shared by anonymous users is not this place.
