Casual Discussion Rules

The following rules apply only to the Casual Discussion board in addition to the Site & Forum Guidelines and take precedence whenever there is a conflict.

1. Please refrain from creating threads that do not encourage meaningful and/or civil discussion. Examples include:
    a. picture collecting

    b. random "xx vs. yy"
e.g. Mickey Mouse vs. Superman, etc.

    c. discussing social media/community members or their works
e.g. What do you think about YouTuberA? Do you agree with blog B? Why is userC so hated? etc.

    d. personal storytelling, narration, ranting, and/or blog-style posts
e.g. Ask me anything!, Ask me about ___, Rate my about me/signature/etc., Post your ___ and I'll rate it
e.g. Blog and/or rant texts about your day etc.
These topics only encourage a one-way discussion where members are commenting on the poster's idea (or vice versa).

    e. MAL community data
e.g. Specific reviews, moderation of data/community content/reviews, etc.
Concerns about the website should be reported using the appropriate buttons or designated MyAnimeList boards.

    f. labeling and/or berating groups of people
e.g. What is the most toxic fandom? Fans of ___ are toxic, Elitists think ___, ___ have "shit taste", etc.

    g. categorizing generalized opinions as popular/unpopular
e.g. Why does everyone like/hate ___, Post your unpopular opinion about ___, etc.
These threads are designed to assign people into black/white categories which then instigate wars between each "side". Either use the overrated/underrated thread or think carefully about what it is you want to discuss and avoid generalizing.

2. Offhand remarks, often consisting of 1-2 words, do not contribute to nor encourage meaningful discussion. Posts should contain thought.
Bypassing the minimum character requirement for posts is considered spam and may result in warnings/bans.

3. The Casual Discussion board is not a chat room.

4. Casual Discussion is also not a spam board. Pointless threads will be removed.

5. General questions/personal concerns should be posted in our General Advice Thread.

6. Casual Discussion is also not a sex board. Thread topics about sexually explicit material are not allowed and will be removed.
This includes but is not limited to topics about:
    • porn material, the porn industry
    • masturbation, sexual preferences, sexual experiences, sexual fetishes

7. Controversial/sensitive topics liable to incite rule violations (trolling, flaming, abuse) are no longer allowed.
This includes but is not limited to topics about:
    • gender, sexual orientation, lgbt, homophobia
    • race, xenophobia, immigration
    • sexual assault, abortion
    • pedophilia, lolicon/shotacon, incest, teenage-adult relationships
    • politics, political ideologies, laws, policies
    • controversial public figures/leaders, hate groups
    • religion
    • drugs, illegal activities

Even if the topic seems innocent and is made with the best intentions, it only takes one bad actor/troll to begin posting in the thread for it to spiral into a toxic exchange—which we have seen repeatedly, time and time again. As much as we don't want to blanket ban all conversations surrounding these topics, it is too common for posts to be made which are liable to ignite toxic flame wars (at best) and/or genuinely harm an individual's mental state (at worst). Thus, these topics should be discussed in a moderated space designed to handle them. A public forum on an entertainment website shared by anonymous users is not this place.

8. News threads are allowed only if they meet all of the following conditions.
    i. They are not pointless (Rule 4), sexual (Rule 6), or controversial/sensitive (Rule 7).
ii. You not only post the news article text, videos, etc. but also add your own thoughts to initiate discussion.
iii. If you cite a news article, you must include the source.
iv. The title is factual and neutrally describes the event. Topics with clickbait/sensationalist titles will either be edited, locked, or removed.

Do not bump news threads more than two weeks old.

Rule #5 Added. Due to the large number of "help" threads which often result in trolling and chatting rather than "helping", we have decided to trial-run combining all of these threads into one "General Advice" thread. If you are not interested in giving legitimate and appropriate advice, please hide this thread.

+ 5. General questions/personal concerns should be posted in our General Advice Thread.

Rule #6 Added. As a result of the sexually explicit topics which have overrun the board, and the fact that many of them are too graphic and detailed for MAL's wide range of age groups, thread starters about sexually explicit material are no longer allowed. If you want to discuss your sexual experiences or fetishes, please do so in secret clubs, skype groups, PMs, etc.

+ 6. Casual Discussion is also not a sex board. Thread topics about sexually explicit material are not allowed and will be removed. This includes, but is not limited to, discussions about: porn material or the industry, pedophilia, masturbation, sexual fetishes or preferences, and sexual experiences.

Rule #3 Updated.
The Casual Discussion board is not a chat room. Please use your profiles, PMs, or our IRC channel (#myanimelist@rizon.net) various chat threads/clubs, or our Discord server for this purpose.

Rule #7 Added. In an effort to curb the amount of toxicity present in Casual Discussion, as well as to hopefully reduce the likelihood of rule violations enabled by such threads, controversial and/or sensitive topics likely devolve into the same repetitive, derogatory, abusive, and harassing comments can no longer be posted. When in doubt, please contact a forum moderator.

+ 7. Controversial/sensitive topics liable to incite rule violations (trolling, flaming, abuse) are no longer allowed. Please use the Current Events board for new developments in these topics, and follow the board rules there. This includes, but is not limited to, topics which:
a. aim to profile/stereotype, or question the legitimacy of, people based on their gender, sexual orientation, race, xenophobia, religion, etc.
b. discuss highly-debated social issues; e.g. abortion, sexual assault, immigration, etc.
c. focus on political ideologies and events; e.g. Nazism, fascism, world leaders, controversial laws/lobbies, etc.

Rule #2 Modified; Expanded. "Simple listing" has been removed from examples of threads which do not encourage discussion, and existing examples have been expanded to include gossiping and blog-style posts.

With the increase of the threads per board page from 20 to 50, the inclusion of the minimum character requirement, and difficulties in consistent moderation of this rule over the years, we have decided to remove "simple listing" as an example from threads which do not encourage discussion. This means we will not be locking threads for this specific reason anymore. However, this does not mean "simple listing" topics can suddenly be spammed on the forum. Please encourage meaningful discussion of any listing topics you create by explaining your own choices.
