Hey, OP! How about anime that actually scared YOU? I'm in search for horror anime right now. Found this review but I don't know if it's trustable. Check it out and tell me what do you think.

Well, not really.. I don't find any anime very scary, except for some random scenes here and there, which were a bit creepy.

I literally screamed 2 times while watching Vatican Kiseki Chousakan.. there were a lot unexpected jumpscares

Also I didn’t screamed but one Shiki scene really scared me. I nearly dropped my laptop.

shiki is the only anime that got remotely close to scaring me;
and even that wasn't even half as scary as horror films

it's very difficult to make scary animation since your suspension of disbelief is very high while watching any animation

@traed I agree on Boogiepop Phantom, really great atmosphere ;).

Ghost Hunt tho... if it's the one I'm thinking about, I wasn't scared. Japanese dub, or english dub? I saw the japanese one, but heard the english one is supposedly better for this show.

Another. I watched it when I was 13 and it was first anime that wasn't PG13. I loved the aura of it but I remember it was terrifying for me. I had fear of umbrellas and elevators for few weeks after. I think about rewatching it some day since now I'm more comfortable with horror stuff but tbh it probably would still scare me.

Yeah I was disappointed Boogiepop & Others didn't have that atmosphere because I need more of that. I think I may also have seen a similar atmosphere to Boogiepop Phantom in a fairly short anime about vampirism but it was boring as fuck so i barely remember it. Guess I need to watch more early 2000s and earlier anime.

It's the shoujo one where the title is just Ghost Hunt in katakana in the Japanese title so appears in English on MAL because the title is just that. I don't remember which I watched it's been years and when I watch subs my brain sometimes turns what they say in Japanese into English sometimes. Was just one or two parts of episodes most wasnt scary. I guess when I say scary here I mean anxious suspense not paranoia inducing or anything like that. Some parts made me tear up too since it had a few sad things in it. Sure you arent thinking of Ghost Stories (Gakku no Kaidan) which the english dub is better because it's intentionally a parody of the show because it was so mediocre they decided to make a shitpost of it? Lol

If you like it, be sure to read the Umineko manga. Or the VN, but the manga is more accessible.

Scared no, but the feeling of "this is something I shouldn't be watching".
The only time I ever felt that, was when I was watching "Elfen Lied".

iirc the first anime that scared me was actually Steins;gate. I think it was around episode 11 there were some scenes that really creeped me out.

I think Moomin was the first anime that has ever spooked me. Groke and the Ice Queen haunted me as a kid. Otherwise there is the Devil in Ousama Ranking which kinda gives me the creeps for some reason. The curse of Abyss in Made in Abyss scares me.

Scared me?

Only in the sense that I would not want to be tortured like many other anime characters have.

Otherwise, there's been anime that has had me question myself why I'm watching it, or why it was made...

OVA's have mostly, done that.

I really recommend watching Ghost Hunt for those want to watch horror anime. It gives off old anime vibes like Yamato Nadeshiko, Hunter X Hunter, Negima, Ouran High School Host Club, etc.. The horror aspect may not work for you but the creep factor will arise from the revival (more like remembering) of past horror themes.

I jump scare easily, so I'm grateful I haven't seen any anime that uses it. The problem is that anime doesn't have the freedom to show what it wants, unlike manga.

Now that i think about it it's hilarious how n Anime actually managed to scare me, No i don't have balls of steel in fact i shit my pants just by watching some old creepyasta yet it's weird idk if it's the art style or just the vibe of "Anime" on general but nope i don't think i ever got scared not even while watching a Horror Anime but i still believe tho that Animation can be Scary if done properly.

Higurashi. Not so much the element of 'horror' but the fear of the unknown happening in the story itself and the reiteration of the story unbeknownst to me at the time. The first three episodes of the Umineko visual novel were genuinely terrifying as well, in the exact same way.

Anime is pretty bad at the realism needed for body horror and jump scares to actually work. Where it can compete is psychological horror and cosmic horror. Both take place between your ears and not mainly on the screen. Advanced search horror + psychological:

https://myanimelist.net/anime.php?cat=0&q=&type=0&score=0&status=0&p=0&r=0&sm=0&sd=0&sy=0&em=0&ed=0&ey=0&c[0]=a&c[1]=b&c[2]=c&c[3]=f&genre[0]=14&genre[1]=40&o=3&w=1

Examples listed this thread include Shiki (the specials in particular), Higurashi, Boogiepop Phantom, or Perfect Blue. Let me add a few lesser known TV ones with the two tags I'd recommend.

The only anime that scares me is Ghost Hunt, Murder House arc, especially in the episode when the monster say "shinitakunai" in front of Mai's face. I mean, i'm 25 y.o. when watching that episode, and still get chills. Imagine those people who watched this show in their early ages, it would be a nightmare.

Another is also "scary" but it's not same as Ghost Hunt. Its more like the eerie atmosphere that disturb me.

Higurashi nail scene is still engraved in my memory for the rest of my days.

One thing that get me is the ambiance, like perfect blue and cat soup are scary while paranoia agent wasn't (still a great show!) Another was funny to me. (meh)

So there really is no way to save the environment? Please do you have some studies or sources I could read about this problematic? (its not that I dont believe you, I just want to immerse myself in the sense of dread)
