Blocking a user should hide their thread or at least their titles

Currently when a user is blocked it only collapses their forum posts but their threads are fully visible title and all. Either the whole thread should be hidden like it is an ignored thread OR the title should be hidden similar to how posts in threads by blocked users are hidden. The purpose of this is to help keep down hostilities between users which helps reduce potential mod work.

EDIT: My bad it should be "ignored users" I forgot ignoring a user is different from blocking them

Why would you erase something like that just because some people didnt put it to use soon enough after?

@traed

I waited some time but nobody was interested in it, neither the person who asked for it, neither I that made it haha....

I actually make a lot of simple things and don't publish them on greasyfork, because they are just very very simple things that most people won't care about anyways.

Greasyfork is already full with "MyAnimeList(MAL) - Profile Switch (2)" switch 3 switch 4 and so on, they are just basically copies of each other without any real improvements or changes, I believe this is actually just a shame and would make greasyfork and all scripts for MAL on greasyfork trashy, the one's that really does something and improve something are on the middle of the mess of multiple "MyAnimeList(MAL) - Profile Switch (2)" versions, this mess would just get worse with more scripts that basically only change the position of, or that remove a button/element on MAL.

I suppose since it does just a little thing yeah. I would think more users would like that function if the block user function was more user friendly and intuitive like i mentioned in the other thread.
(im just linking it for others reading these suggestion posts of mine)

I was asking myself if this was previously suggested by you and I made that script for you, but it seems like I'm wrong, so at least 1 other person besides you has suggested that within 1 year ago and want's this same thing...

I don't think having a blocking/unblocking button anywhere would have more people wanting to use a script (or have this feature implemented by mal) that hides topics created by blocked users.

Both of your suggestions are kind of related, but not really...

If I could recover that script I made and share it here for you I totally would do it, I tried when I saw your topic here, but I couldn't find it...

Oh yeah, I strongly agree with you here, traed.
I made a thread some time ago asking for some changes in the blocking system, which included what you're asking here, and to be honest I think this is the one that deserves the most attention.

I made three other blocking type action suggestions too. Intend with all is user self moderation basically.

I just realized it would have to do something different than add threads to the hide list because the hide list has a limit to how many threads you can hide or the limit needs removed.

It doesn't make sense for that to have a limit in the first place. I am already near the limit just from ignoring all the shitty alt account threads.

Unfortunately, you can BUMP this thread or the other threads like this till infinity and MAL is unlikely to ever add any one of them, let alone all of them.

Fortunately, though I've recently had the need to remove all visible existence of a certain someone so I've been motivated into fixing/updating Unlimited MAL Ignore list

It has most of the features you wanted, like hiding threads/posts/quotes and blacklist/unblacklist buttons on posts and profile messages, may or may not add one to their profiles and I might look into adding user-defined words to hide threads/posts as well, but I don't plan on adding genre/tags to block db entries.

I know you'd rather have MAL add these in 10 years, but you have to take what you can get.

Yeah, thanks but I dont really have a personal need since I dont even have anyone blocked. It’s purpose is to get the mods to back off so things can go back to being fun on the site instead of being run like an oppressive dictatorship.

I came here to suggest this very thing. I have about a dozen people blocked. The problem is it still shows their inflammatory threads, it still shows their collapsed post in those threads.

The thing is this. I blocked them because I don't want to see their threads, I don't want to see their posts, I don't want to know that they exist on the internet. As far as I'm concerned, MAL should remove the thread from my forum view, remove their posts from other threads, and remove the times they're quoted. It should scrub their existence from my browser. And this shouldn't be taxing on the servers since it should be able to be done on the front end with Javascript with an "if user_list.includes(user)" type thing. It should be a very easy implementation.

Please make this happen. It may surprise you that I don't actually want to see people who I know annoy me, and they can say all the ignorant crap they say outside of my attention.

Unfortunately, I'm against installing insecure browser extensions on principle. I like the simplicity.

I won't even mind if there is "oppressive dictatorship" since I'd just block them before any argument arises.

Post the relevant part of your front end on Github and I'll write a patch to make this happen lol. Or I'm sure it wouldn't take your developers long. It would

  1. Simplify moderation
  2. Wouldn't cost anything on the server
  3. Wouldn't slow down site function much to just remove some div nodes to hide them from the user
  4. Decrease shitposting and probably deliver more relevant ads
  5. Give affected users a better site experience and other users would see more content they're interested in instead of arguments
  6. Increase average time on page since people could more easily find what they're looking for
  7. Probably take an hour to implement since it's mostly front-end and won't affect the API or CDN or anything

There's no reason not to implement this. If you implement this, I would legit block about 30 people on the forums and mods will never hear from me again at least with regards to issues on the forum. And I'm sure from me as a use case that others would be interested as well.

I actually made a new thread requesting the same block user button functionality while you wrote this. I'm 100% behind that.

The problem with a blacklist [any text] function is that it would require searching through the free-form text and possibly dealing with different variations of a word, which might have a cost on loading time (might, I don't know...), whereas the users of posts should just be provided in a neat list by the server. I think this is a good idea but it might require some testing.

I also agree with your last suggestion, that bans could be specific to posting in forums, or editing anime, or whatever the offense is. But while this is a good function, I think being able to properly block users take precedence.

Hm, hard to say. I do know it was implemented on Tumblr but I think in that case it was for tags and prior to it’s official implementation there it was done by a userscript. In both cases it was up to the user to take care of adding misspellings and other variations which isn’t ideal for users but more efficient on the site. I may have seen it elsewhere too but I can’t recall right now.

Looking to do this on an android mobile that uses Microsoft Edge or Mal app. Unfortunately the script does not work with Microsoft Edge and is ineffective in clubs and on the app.

you can use Kiwi, Firefox Nightly builds I believe and Yandex as well as Opera and Chrome browsers on desktop until Microsoft Edge mobile decides to add extensions like tampermonkey/greasemonkey if it isn't already.

also you may need to switch the site to Desktop mode or use https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/445195-desktop-mode-mal

Yeah I've looked into it but it doesn't seem worth it to install a completely different browser just to access one site on mobile. Additionally, I'm never on my laptop when on MaL.

true, but it is worth uninstalling Edge and using a better browser since Microsoft has never been able to make a decent browser.
