Probably Cowboy Bebop, it's something I'm sure they won't forget and leave them wanting more.

I would show them Death note. That's like the perfect 1st anime to watch. If they think that anime is for kids then I'll show then Attack on titan and they'll regret their opinion.

Male - Attack on Titan, Death Note
Female - Your Name, A Silent Voice

Though those shows could be enjoyed for both genders, i'm just assuming that female in general loves drama more than action or psychological, vice versa

It's way better to give someone a specific recommendation based on the kind of show they want to watch.

I'd say like Re Zero, because I think it could have some mainstream appeal, and is in the right zone of "anime-ness". It is not overly weird, but also contains normal anime tropes. There is no sense in introducing someone into anime by showing them a once in a lifetime experience they'll never get again.

If they want something short and emotional then Anohana, Your Name and A Silent voice
If they prefer action, suspense or mystery then I would show them Death Note, Boku Dake ga inai machi or The promised neverland

I'd ask them what their favorite shows and movies already are and request something similar. If I can't tell then I'd say Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and I'd tell them it's a lot like Avatar

I would show them Boku no Pico and scare them off. No one needs subject themselves to a drug called "anime" no more.

Death Note, which I think is the best starter anime along with Attack on Titan

My little brother just watched My Hero coming from thinking anime was dumb and boring.
I'm trying to get him to watch Violet Evergarden.

So that would be one of the best imo

Probably something good aesthetically. Something with great animation like Kimi no Na Wa because it's not much of a dedication or Death Note because that is the most similar to regular television that I have seen.

I always considered the best gateway anime to be Samurai Champloo.
I feel like majority of "first anime" recommendations are ones that don't really give people a taste of the broader appeal of anime and are just broadly appealing to normies. Samurai Champloo has all the elements necessary to keep a general audience engaged while also being an unapologetic expression of every fun idea the creators wanted to try out, which I think is the closest thing to being the main appeal of anime.
The show's opening disclaimer says it all: "This work of fiction is not an accurate historical portrayal. Like we care. Now shut up and enjoy the show!"

Hunter x Hunter 2011!

Honestly I think it's a perfect starter anime, even if it's got a ton of episodes. It has a bit of every genre in it and the characters are great

I have to finish it but I kinda wish it was my first anime lol

I feel like it's best to cater to whatever they'll probably appreciate more. Some people who don't really watch anime might still love Your Name. Some people who are somewhat into meme culture might be into Ghost Stories. Really depends on the person and what you'd think they'll find appealing, tbh.

Death Note is entertaining and good to start in anime, so you get used to anime that have a similar treatment. Then Cowboy Bebob and Full Metal Alchemist.

Death Note is a popular choice for me because I've recommended it to at least 4 friends who have all gotten into anime since then because of it.

Another one I would recommend is Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, they're both good "journeys" that you won't forget the plot of since they're episodic and something new happens every episode.

I tried it with my friend; whose mainly a gamer. I looked into the games he likes to play which are action/adventure types (Red Dead Redemption, The Last of Us and Uncharted). His favorite VA is Troy Baker and I thought ‘FMAB has Troy Baker voicing Greed and it’s got a lot of action in it.’ I know I should’ve tried showing him Log Horizon, but it’s easier when you have it on DVD and can just lend it to someone. And he actually watched the whole thing. He also watched Blood Blockade Battlefront too, but that’s about all I’ve gotten him to watch sadly.

So, it’s better to cater to whatever said person likes instead of forcing them to watch an Anime they will probably not enjoy. If they ask to continue watching it that’s a sign they enjoy it even if they don’t really show they did.

Honestly, at this point I pretty much just recommend everyone Hensuki, my gymbros, army bunkmates and my close friends, 15% success rate to get them to watch XD.

Though yea, gotta see what genres they like to watch and how close they are to me,but if it is a girl yea fk no imma not gonna recommend Hensuki.

If they want something normal then i just pick one of my 9/10s, like ReZero or all the fking good romcoms

Amagi Brilliant Park, even though I haven't seen it yet, since I'm using an avatar from it.

And from what I know about it, it ACCURATELY captures wider anime.
Unlike Shounen that have been readily adopted by the West as completely meshing with Western culture.

Amaburi has all the trappings of Japanese entertainment. Idol culture, cuteness, sex appeal.
(and appeal to males specifically)
(I remember seeing a clip of Amaburi that has some thirsty/rapey little boys in it lol)

This should be on a case by case basis and you have to know your audience. For a friend, I'd say something like My Hero Academia or another popular shounen show would be your best bet. On the other hand, if I'm trying to get my mom to watch something, I wouldn't show her something like that. She did like Violet Evergarden, Maquia and Great Pretender though, so if I wanted to find something to watch with her, I'd go for something like those shows.

It depends on their current liking of shows, if they like horror, I'd show em TPN or Hirugashi, if they like cute shows I'd show em K-ON, sad dramas would be Anohana, YLIA, or JAPAN SINKS: 2020, action probably Ao No Exorcist or Jojo, comedy would be Teasing Master Takagi San or Pop Team Epic, romantic comedies would be Kaguya Sama SO yeah, it depends

Depends on their situation and preferences.

Can they download?
Can the watch on a computer?
Do they have Netflix and or Prime?
What genres of movies and tv shows do they like?
Time constraints?

and go from there with something that is popular and not so out there that is scares them away.

If its just hypothetical and I can pick anything. as someones first...probably Death Note. Its not really long its something most people have watched so they could talk to others about it openly and its generally widely liked. Genre really matters though so I would pick something from what ever genre they were most interested in.

A movie because no noob will watch a multi-cour show. That'll get them used to JP animation. That movie would be Your Name probably, because it is proven to have mass appeal, so it's the best bet for unknown taste. I'd continue with movies a while, and then maybe after he/she has bitten, short series.

Anime that is good and not based on opinion or what how is your favourite, but anime that undoubtedly is good. There's a not of anime which are subjective in terms of what you like, these anime are very bad to recommend because it's subjective in taste. However some anime break that barrier where there's no denying they are a great anime a few of these anime are:

Monster
Attack on titan
FMA brotherhood
Hunter x hunter 2011
Beastars
Gungrave
Mo dao zu shi
Seirei no moribito
Michiko to hatchin
The promised neverland
Mushishi
Parasyte
Mob psycho
Afro samurai
Samurai champloo
Darker than black
91 days
Mutafukaz
Berserk (the original)
Steamboy
Akira
Asura
Studio ghibli movies
Re:zero
Made in abyss
Steins gate
Death note
Perfect blue
Tokyo godfathers
Ghost in the shell
Shinsekai yori
Shinreigari
Kino's journey
Fate series
Vinland saga
Death parade
Durarara
Mirai no mirai
Clannad
Violet evergarden
The girl who leapt through time
Wolf children
Beyond the boundary
A place further than the universe
In this corner of the world
Your name
A silent voice
Weathering with you
Hyouka
Bloom into you
Tekkonkinreet
Miss hokusai
Big fish & begonia
Dennou coil
Higashi no eden
The legend of hei
Black jack
Now and then, here and there
Great pretender
Noein
Children who chase lost voices
Gosick
Kokoro connect
Kubikuri cycle
Metropolis
Memories
Higurashi
Shiki
Haruhi suzumiya

Aoi bungaku
Umineko no naku
Legend of galactic heroes

My pick would probably be Death Note, since its short with a great story.

I would also like to say Attack on Titan, since it doesn't have references to anime culture and people who never watched anime before will be able to understand how good it is.

But the problem is that its too good of a show, so it will raise people's expectations for their next anime.

It depends alot of what the person is like, but death note appeals to everyone so, death note.

Mob Psycho, One Punch Man and Violet evergarden are also some good ones, since they are pretty good and don't have much of the anime stuff that migth be strange to beginers.

So this is me, I don't think recommending cowboy bebop to a casual scrub is a good idé.

I think going for hobbies is the best way to go as they have connection to what they are watching.
Going for a deep show at the start of it, might be a really bad idé. It might be way to much for them.

Well that's what I think about helping out a friend with Anime.
