I can't imagine a beginner's reaction if he is watching monster as his first anime.

Why? It's a straightforward story.
'Life is full of ups and downs, trials and tribulations, successes and disappointments. Think positive always and never allow disappointments drag you down. Hell! Disappoint anyone and everyone, but never and I repeat, NEVER disappoint yourself'.

Listing thread, probably will closed/removed soon.

Also, I don't think there is a universal best beginner list, though it would be easy to make one about the worsts. It's best approached case-by-case based on the individual looking for an entry.

I think this challenge is a good way to get a breadth of anime under your belt, understand the medium, and figure out what kinds of anime you tend to like. Recommending people popular shit and possibly turning them away by making them think it's just about little boys fighting each other is not ideal.

it's not just about the story. Its about the decisions which the characters make(or are forced to make) and their consequences

anything mainstream is a safe choice tbh,
as someone else said before, it will be easier to make a list of what to not watch as a beginner.

I'll rephrase, everything the franchise has to offer is straightforward. It should be fine for beginners to enjoy quite easily.
'Life is full of ups and downs, trials and tribulations, successes and disappointments. Think positive always and never allow disappointments drag you down. Hell! Disappoint anyone and everyone, but never and I repeat, NEVER disappoint yourself'.

Maybe instead of listing, we can discuss the qualities that make an anime suitable for beginners. But something tells me there are none, if we’re recommending everything from Fullmetal Alchemist to Yuri On Ice.

It's better if one simply makes a recommendation personalized on the beginner's taste, or a list of what-not-to-watch like the others said. Once the beginner says they hate action, you can't recommend them all that battle shounen you were saving up to recommend.

I don't like the idea that there's some kind of bar that would stop someone who has seen very little anime from understanding or enjoying specific series or films. The closest I can come is seeing that there are more culturally centric movies or shows, but even those are presented in a way that anyone who can read subtitles and is willing to give some attention can easily understand everything (or almost everything).

I also don't think that anime as a medium tends to be as disruptive or daring enough for people to work their way up into it. For example, I've found that most people don't read long and difficult novels. Almost always, people have to kind of work their way up to reading something that's 700-1,000 pages, have some idea of how the authors writes, their pet topics, and lots of time on their hands, etc. I don't think I've ever watched an anime film or TV show that I had to immediately rewatch or that confused me like Ulysses, Gravity's Rainbow, Beckett's Trilogy, etc have.

Anyway, all this to say, I think it's best that people start with what they're interested in. We can argue about a kind of canon, but the vast majority of people don't care about that.

Start off with 10-13 ep length series, get a few of those under their belts and then tackle something much larger. I know people would tackle anime differently, as we all do it differently. But slapping a 37, or over 50 ep show on them right from the get go might be too much. It's best to go in small and let the interest build from there.

This. Studio Ghibli was a great part of my childhood and the main reason why I got into anime so easily in first place. It helps that they make usually meaningful movies that you can rewatch when you're older and get a different, richer perspective on them.

Going from that to most popular shounens would probably be a good idea. Personally, I mostly agree with the list in the original post.

No, I believe you meant to say Shrek.

Shrek isn't even an anime smh. It's a form of art that transcends all human mediums. It is beyond the comprehension of normal humans.

Rather than pick ten shows individually I’ve done a list in order that I would give to a random person if they wanted to try watching anime and I knew nothing of their preferences.

Death Note
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
The Promised Neverland
Hinamatsuri
Attack on Titan
One Punch Man
Parasyte: The Maxim
No Game No Life
Elfen Lied
Steins;Gate

It starts off with two hugely popular and successful shows, one psychological and one shounen, both considered good anime for beginners. The Promised Neverland is slightly newer and has a story that I think could be well received by Western audiences. Hinamatsuri is something different, a slice of life comedy that shows a different side of anime. Attack on Titan is another epic shounen that is hugely popular and easily appreciated by newbies. By the time they’re five shows in I think they’d be ready to appreciate the comedy of One Punch Man. Parasyte is a classic that has to be in the list. No Game No Life again showcases the less serious side of anime but I left it til later as some Westerners could be put off anime if this was one of the first things they watched as they could see it as confirming any preconceived notion they had that anime is “weird”. Elfen Lied is more graphic and absolutely shows that anime isn’t just “cartoons for kids”, again though I left it to nearer the end in case people thought all anime was this messed up. And finally Steins;Gate, for me personally the best anime ever, I wouldn’t have it right at the top as I think the first half is a little slow and might put people off, by ten series in though I think people would be ready to appreciate this masterpiece.
The criteria I use when rating shows is on my profile.

I would save cowboy bebop for like once you already get into anime the first half is boring and it can put some beginner anime fans off anime it almost happened to me I actually dropped it a few times then continued watching and I only enjoyed the last half of it.

My top 10 anime for beginners would be:
Hunter x hunter 2011
FMA brotherhood
Attack on titan
Studio ghibli movies
Mob psycho 100
Fate/zero
Kekkai sensen
Space dandy
Afro samurai
Akira

Also you could swap any of those for the classic anime like one piece, naruto, bleach, yu yu hakusho, inuyasha, lupin III, pokemon, digimon, dragonball, sailor moon, rave master, etc..
