Damn, I feel bad for Nobunaga's master. That's the cycle of life and death I guess.

Got to see more of Nobunaga's past this episode though.

RIP old man.

So we see more of Nobunaga's past. The old man really cared about him.

Historical notes:

The rise of the samurai class in the 10th century gradually eroded the political power of Japan's imperial court; by the Sengoku period they were largely relegated to ceremonial monarchy. But since the Emperor was considered an embodiment of divine harmony, the imperial court was capable of recognizing and legitimizing the sovereignty of the shoguns/feudal lords.

Most of the retainer names thrown around this episode are of real-life figures. Nobunaga's unorthodoxy made the older conservatives his enemies, who preferred a more traditional leader in the form of Nobukatsu.

Sengoku Japan was an era of largely unrestricted trade with foreign nations. Large numbers of foreign traders were active in Japan; some Japanese travellers actively travelled abroad, even forming Japantowns in countries as far as Siam (aka Thailand). Some feudal lords were able to become rich and powerful from overseas trade. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihonmachi

The sumo match depicted is more of an amateur folk sumo game, hence no big size regulations like in modern sumo. Photographs from the 1800s show muscular but normal-sized wrestlers were a thing back then. https://www.japan-talk.com/jt/new/the-skinny-sumo-wrestlers-of-Japan

The real Hirate was said to have committed seppuku to wake up Nobunaga to face his responsibilities.

That whole thing with Hirate was bullshit. He actually died in 1551 after committing Seppuku not long after Nobuhide's funeral because he wanted to shock Nobunaga into face his responsibilities are the new Daimyo of Owari. That was the actual event that made Nobunaga get his shit together and gain a zero tolerance attitude towards controlling the Oda clan.

Probably would have had more impact if we had met this old dude in earlier episodes, as it was the melodrama didn't feel earned.

Oh? Hirate is present since the first episode... and he always looked protective of Nabunaga.

Looks like one good man had to pass for Nobunaga-sama to respond.

History is distorted as the source goes, but it's direction is one I would beg to caution.

Having a guy in the background who people familiar with the history will know is a long way from developing a character for a general audience to have an attachment that will pay off a death scene like the guy got. I mean if you felt a connection with the guy in the previous episodes then I guess it's just me, but I honestly felt like his death scene was unearned in the anime.

Good episode.

Doesn't seem like anyone is watching this anime, but I'm thankful for a serious story about Oda Nobunaga, even if it isn't historically accurate. Obviously.

The old man is gone, but he helped Nobunaga in so many ways, and he won't forget that.

Hirate was a better father than Nobuhide was to Nobunaga

One of the few retainers as far as I can see who was loyal to nobunaga, sad to see him go...
