As a proud brit I have come to realise that there are far more anime set in the UK than I thought. As a result, I have been curious about how many UK based animes there really are.

Because of this I thought I would be fun to start a list of UK based anime followed by the year it first aired, the studio and the UK based locations that were featured.

I will also add links to real locations in year of airing over time due to it being abit time consimung to find them all, and this will be the same order as the following anime list.

Please please let me know what other animes are out there that I have not included and the, studio, first aired year and UK locations they have been featured in and I will add them in the thread to keep the post up to date, if I am wrong on anything please let me know and I will also correct it.

UPDATE: We now have up to 40 tittles! NOTE I will only count anime that is based on a real location, if it is the landscape of an unmentioned location such as the countryside it still counts even if it is not accurate, as long as it shares a location that is likely to be real to some extent with in the UK but ONLY if it is the geography alone, also no mangas as I would rather keep that topic seperate in order to keep things simple.
I will also add the Pokemon Sword and Shield anime down, but only when it releases (HYPPPPE!) Untill then KEEP THOSE TITTLES COMMING GUYS! =D

@mhkr Cheers! (which if you don't know translates to "thanks!" in the UK) it looks like the UK would only just beat out the US in quantity as alot on my list appear to not be on this other page you have linked me that not only include the UK, if so then we will have both, more set here and more of the popular ones being set here.

I will add these ones to my list. They definitly have quite a few more to add in so I will ilet SleepingBear know. he also made a mistake by sectining off Scotland from the UK which is a fearly common mis conception as Scotland is part of the UK along with the connecting not independant nations of southern Ireland and Wales as well as England, hence UK for a reason. I will add these in as soon as I can as well. Very helpful and useful indeed!

Too bad UK TV back then did not embrace anime, in contrast to continental Europe

Some more:

Mischievous Twins:The Tales of St Clares (TMS, 1991, Oxford) based on the popular novels

Little Prince Cedie and Secret Garden were also adapted to anime. 1986,Nippon Animation, English countryside and 1992,NHK, Yorkshire

Lassie too (meiken lassie) ,1996, Nippon Animation,, Yorkshire and other places

Peter Pan (1989,Nippon Animation) has some episodes taking place in London

Candy Candy (1977,Toei) has an arc taking place in London, some port (probably Southampton) and the British country side. Story is about an orphan in America befriending some American aristocrats with Scottish ancestry

Hello! Sandybell (1981,Toei) , takes place in Scotland and England. One of the best openings and endings too!Takes me back

Treasure Island (TMS, 1978)has some episodes taking place in Britain too.West England and Bristol and some British dominion islands

Remi (1977,TMS) has second half taking place in victorian London and British countryside. Only anime that does exchange, though wrongly, between French sous and British pound. They should have used shilling instead. Only anime to show the difference in prices in goods and services at that era.

Ashita no Nadja (2003,Toei) has majority of episodes taking place in England in various places

@petran79 You sound like you have been to or moved to the UK, Am I correct? :D Heck, Yorkshire as an anime setting I thought that had never been done yet. I live in the largest city of Yorkshire being Leeds the economic power house of the region. Thanks for informing me! I will list all the animes down and check out the ones I will likely enjoy. Thanks!

@GlennMagusHarvey I am so hyped, more shinys and maybe EV training. I used to compete in the trading card game/TCG and video game championships/VGC competative scene as well, TCG between 2008 - 2010 and VGC 2011 to 2016. Proud british 90s fan here needless to say so I will definitely list this down once the anime comes out! :D

This list may also be of interest, although I believe it includes any title that spends any time there (including 1-shot flashbacks and such), as opposed to titles fully based in the UK.

Everything that connects to MAL

Contains Ecchi, but not Tagged Ecchi: Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3

I studied in London early 2000 and currently my brother works there, so I go visit him every Christmas or Easter.
no problem. Many more anime are fansubbed to English now so they are more accessible

@Zalis
Nice list, unfortunately they don't mention more details and some titles I mentioned are surprisingly missing too
Willie Fog, another classic I had forgotten about!

Oh yeah, it is because I just read the tittle, Unbreakable machine dolls is still in the UK though as it is roughly set in Liverpool from what I have seen, even the fictional church is the same one that is located just off the same street. (This anime is already in the list as well). Expect linked location comparisons on the stread in due course! =D

Hey there! In addition to the shows you mentioned: Princess Principal is set in Albion - and the OST by Yuki Kajiura is called Foggy London, The Seven Deadly Sins is set in Britannia, and Claymore although not specifically set in Scotland is also the name of a Scottish broadsword......and the OST features Bagpipes and Gaelic/Celtic melodies!

You're probably all members already, but if you're not please feel free to click on this link for the British Anime Club (on MAL):

@petran79 I am struggling to find Little Prince Cedi and Mischievous Twins:The Tales of St Clares on MAL. Please can you link me them? Thanks in advance. Also if you mean the disney Peter pan than that is clearly not japanese animation, I am only counting japanese animated tittles that are TV animes so no mangas or novels either, hence the word Manga not being mentioned.

@Geshtinanna I doubt anyone else on this thread is a member as only 700+ out of over 8 million total members is a very small concentration needless to say. There for even I actualllly haven't despite joining the Clannad and K on! clubs in the past. I might do though depending on how well my British anime list builds up. Right now i haven't only seen the k on! movie, Fate/zero and Kiniro mosaic of all UK based animes. So to join I would like to at least double it first else I am going to look quite ignorant needless to say lol.

Also since Brittania is not the same as the Britian of today it can't count. It has to at least some what resemble a real location of today that actually exists and that mimics the appearence and at least represent the area enough to indicate a level of inspiration.

@AurafullAlex Fate/Zero is quite an amazing and very dark adventure. I would recommend it's sequel Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works as well because the Clock Tower (the Mages Association) is based in London (you see them there at the end), and it also happens to be one of my favourite series!

Yeah, good point regarding the Club. I'm glad that people who didn't know about it have had a chance to hear that one exists - a haven for tea drinking anime aficionados :D

I only know (excluding obviously Fate/Zero) about:

Lord El-Melloi II Sei no Jikenbo Special (there are TV series with the same name coming up)
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works 2nd Season - in the last episode (+ brief cameo of Waver Velvet aka Lord El-Melloi II)
Fate/Apocrypha - some short scenes with Waver Velvet aka Lord El-Melloi II

Layton Mystery Tanteisha: Katri no Nazotoki File - the main character is professor's adopted daughter Katrielle and he appears too for several episodes.

"Black Scottish [X]" is a joke based on the line "black Scottish cyclops" that the Demoman from Team Fortress 2 identifies himself as (since he's black, Scottish, and has only one working eye.

But my point was whether I should put up with an annoying character (Yaya) in order to get to the part with that video I showed you earlier.

I am not exactly sure what do you ask me to do but here some info about the movie in Layton's wiki - https://layton.fandom.com/wiki/Professor_Layton_and_the_Eternal_Diva

The movie is mostly centered on the adventure that follows Professor Layton and the Last Specter, where Professor Layton's former student Janice is to perform in 'The Eternal Kingdom' opera at the Crown Petone. After the opera, the person who wins the 'game' is promised Eternal Life.

And here is the info about what is Crown Petone - https://layton.fandom.com/wiki/Crown_Petone

Professor Layton and Luke were invited to the opera house by Janice Quatlane, who needed their assistance. Emmy dropped them off before heading back to London. During their visit they watched her perform in 'The Eternal Kingdom' opera, and were trapped as contestants in the game for Eternal Life.

Later, it turned out to be a massive ship that broke away from the shore, it then became surrounded by controlled sharks preventing anyone from exiting the game for Eternal Life.

Basically Layton's private investigation agency office is in London. Katrielle is using it too.

Howl's Moving Castle is based in England iirc.

Also, if you put Kiniro Mosaic there, you might as well put Girls und Panzer. One of the matches were organized within the UK territory iirc (technically fleet of St. Gloriana Girls College).

Baccano! is also connected to London (Don't wanna spoil it).

These are all I can think of from my list apart from the ones already mentioned.

Also I think with Ghilbi movies always have that magical element to them that the setting is not the same as I didn't feel it appared as though it was England so there for since the setting must had been one of those magical made up ones Howl's moving castle likely cannot count as I am only counting the animes that have to any extent copied the real UK locations of the UK of today and that actually exist and can there for be confirmed in the real world.

I will add Baccano though as well Girld un panzer (once I know where it is based).

Now I remembered that Master Keaton had some episodes in England - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Keaton

06 "White Goddess"

Sounds like a story based in England.

18 "Faker's Miscalculation"

20 "The Island of the Cowards"
In blaze of gunfire Polish gangsters takes over Keaton's hotel on Cara Island, Scotland...

21 "The Thistle Emblem"
Keaton flies to Scotland to investigate the provenance of a Scottish watch engraved with an unknown coat of arms preserved in a shrine in Japan...

23 "No Way Out"
Keaton captures the criminal Bruce Kendall in the Lake District, and he decides to escort him cross country by foot to avoid Kendall's men...

24 "The Day the Op Was Born"
Keaton recalls the first time he met Daniel O'Connel, 10 years ago at an archaeological excavation in White Wells, Yorkshire, when Keaton helped Daniel solve the suspicious death of an assistant archaeologist.

27 "The Red Wind"
Three Russian boys, Stefan, Mikhail and Nikolai vowed to always remain comrades. Many years later, Russian businessman, Stefan Razin, is in the United Kingdom to attend an air show and his two bodyguards are murdered.

29 "The Forbidden Fruit"
Keaton crashes a party for the newest board member of a premiere accounting firm in the United Kingdom. He is investigating the suspicious deaths of three board members...

30 "The Highlands in Your Eyes"
In Finchfield, Essex, Keaton attempts to rescue the artist Mr. Douglas who is forced to paint forgeries...

34 "The Agate Color of Time"
Keaton travels through Cornwall with his daughter, Yuriko. He recalls the time in his youth when stayed there...

35 "Love in May"
While Keaton rests his broken leg in hospital, his daughter Yuriko becomes involved with an elderly Japanese woman in London when her bag is snatched. Later, Yuriko helps the woman track down an Englishman she met 50 years ago in Japan and helps to reunite them.

38-39 "Hunting Season Part 1-2"
In Earls Court, London, a knife-wielding man murders Paul Sparrow, a former military agent and who is now involved in heroin importation...

Maybe other episodes too (the one with the ex IRA member?)

@shanimebib Nah Girls un panzer is still UK based and seemingly accurate to the country as you can't really go wrong with mimicking a load of water and land in the distance. @alshu It would be very helpful expect I am not doing listing mangas or I would had used the word manga and I thought it was clear since "anime" doesn't tend to be used to refere to mangas and only the TV animations. You know now though lol. Thanks for trying though. Also I will need to know the location settings of the other 2 fate animes you mentioned to me before adding them so that others viewing this thread can see where they are based and as that is also part of the point of this thread as well.

Isn‘t Baccano set entirely in America though. Cuz I can‘t seem to recall it being related to London.

I don't get what you are saying here.

I was talking about the anime adaptation of Master Keaton.
It has TV series - https://myanimelist.net/anime/1483/Master_Keaton and OVA continuation - https://myanimelist.net/anime/1910/Master_Keaton_OVA

Or maybe you are skipping on the manga adaptions? Not sure why do you do that tho. Then the list in your first post should reduced in half...no JoJo, no Hellsing, no Detective Conan ect ect

Uh, how many time should I write London here... There is a magical academy there in the Fate multiverse. Also in F/SN UBW they go to some place that is supposed to be the resting place of Arthur Pendragon...not sure where it supposed to be in the show.

@alshu it just makes it the list simpler since as you can see the list is allready long enough as it is and since animes and manga are 2 defferent forms 1 being TV, and the other 1 being the book form I feel it makes sence myself. Since there is an anime adaptation I'll add it.

Your first list is full with manga adaptions - you should remove them: JoJo, Dective Conan, Hellsing ect.

And if you intend to apply some semblance of fairness you should remove the book adaptaions - Fate/Zero, Little Lord Fauntleroy, Agatha Christie's ect.

Also you should remove the game adaptions - the rest of the Fates...

More details about some entries:

Manx mouse (1979,Nippon Animation, fictional town of Buntingdowndale, England)
Based on a children's novel, also adapted to English

Highlander The Search for Vengeance. (2007,Madhouse)
Beginning takes place in Scotland during the Roman era.

As for mhkr's list, Robin Hood takes place in the same setting as the other adaptations.

Regarding Sasourai no shojo nell, it is based on Dicken's Curiosity Shop and takes place in London and the British countryside too.

I also remembered that Paris no Isabell anime (1979,DAX) has the MC flee to London during the Franco-prussian war in order to meet Karl Marx. But only for 1 episode so I am not sure it counts.

Willy Fog (nippon Animation, 1984) is based on Around the World in 80 Days, so first and last episodes take place in London.
