Iunno, I think I can kind of get it. Being around people who bitch about everything you like is annoying as shit, especially when discussions tend to be innocuous with it. Like, being a group conversation, three people are all happily talking about a subject they all like, whilst the fourth sits there and talks about how awful it is the whole time. That person is kind of going to come off as being harsh and making the conversation needlessly bumpy, especially if they're somebody you don't know very well or even a complete stranger like they'll generally be on this site. They can come off as rude when the setting is being viewed in line with something like that.
And when they're somebody who's got like, a mean score of 2, they're presenting themselves as being the type to bitch about pretty much everything. It makes them come off as being an insufferable type of person through that lens, and the response is to turn around and try to build a worse image around people who are like this, hence, obnoxious threads about these people just existing within this space. They come across as being buzzkills - or even just potential buzzkills - to these other people. It's high school level bullshit, it feels like.
The issue with it is that this is a discussion board, and a public one at that. Dumb group convos about shit you like, among like-minded people, aren't going to be found in the anime fandom at large, and bringing issues like that into more public places like AD is kind of icky. I feel like they would be better off in a specific type of club or a Discord server or something if they're seeking out something like that when coming to this site. People come here for vastly different things and can have pretty much entirely dissonant reasons for sharing this hobby in the first place, and it should all be fair game in an environment like this. People can also use scoring systems in a way that feels weird to others, and not necessarily have too different of a reaction between somebody giving something a 3 and somebody giving the same thing as an 8, but that number being makes all of the difference in the world in how its being perceived and leads to miscommunication. It could be a variety of things, but basically, it's easy to see these people with really low mean scores as buzzkills to what they want to be a good time and so people get cage-y with them.
It's stupid shit, but at the end of the day I'm more likely to side with people's ability to have stupidly low mean scores just on the principle of them being able to have the ability to do so and not face as much pressure for it. It isn't an issue in of itself and shouldn't be treated as such. Whether or not they act like assholes about it is entirely independent of the fact of them having it.
Iunno, I'm just spitballing, I guess, but that's how it feels to be to me and why this is a common topic of discussion. That's at least how I'm making sense of it. |
