Way back when I'm still a child (ranging between 1-3 lol) my mother told me that I used to watch Alice in Wonderland. Also Voltes 5 and lots of anime that aired in our television. Although I don't really remember some of them. But I started to show interest in anime when I was 11, I used to watch Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online (until I realized SAO was Harem).

Not counting heavily Americanized stuff like Pokemon, Dragonball, and Sailor Moon (and a brief stint catching Case Closed and Yu Yu Hakusho when I couldn't sleep a few nights), I was around eight when I first learned these Asian-y cartoons I've been watching were called "anime" and that was when I started reading manga. Rayearth, Naruto, Shaman King, Rurouni Kenshin, Oh My Goddess, Comic Party, Inuyasha, and Azumanga Daioh were my favorites around that time. I didn't really start watching anime not on TV until I was around ten, Azumanga Daioh was the first show I ever watched fansubs of. I think I was around 12 when I first started buying DVDs, Kino's Journey and of course Azumanga Daioh were the first two I ever owned other than Pokemon and Hamtaro ones I got when I was much younger.

Like most kids I grew up with things like Pokemon and Yugioh but it was not until I was 17 that I gave anime a real try and Naruto was the first one for that. Its funny I was 17 but I totally felt like I was a kid again from watching Naruto lol

I watched Pokemon and Naruto when I was probably 6. And then I stopped at 10, possibly. In 2016, I started watching anime again, it was Naruto to be the first one at that time as well.

I started when I was 16 with Death Note because I wanted to see what everyone was referencing. May have been a late start compared to others that grew up with stuff like Pokemon and Naruto, but I'm 20 now and still going strong with anime

(Still have never watched the kid classics that most watch though lol)

I draw a clear and careful distinction between when I saw a very limited amount of anime as a young kid on American TV, dubbed and out of order, and when I first started purposely watching series with intent and in order.

The first was 99% Pokemon's season 1, the Indigo League episodes, when I was 8 and starting from second grade in school. Maybe I saw 50 episodes in total? Just in reruns at whatever random time in the afternoon it was on after school. At this time, to my eyes, ears, and brain, there was no "anime". There was a slightly different looking cartoon. Just as there were slight variations in drawing style and such between different American cartoons, like whether something was Disney, on Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon, a Warner Bros. or Hanna Barbera creation, etc.

The other 1% around that young age was a handful of Dragonball Z episodes when I was in middle school/junior high at some point (a literal handful; maybe just 5-6).

After that time, I didn't watch anime until high school age, around 16, when I watched Spirited Away, and so from that point the only anime I ever saw for years after were a few Ghibli movies. By then (when I first watched Spirited Away) I knew what anime was, but had no interest in looking up series to actually try and start and get into them. I think I was under the false impression from the outside that all anime series were mainly just one genre of Dragonball-style battle shounen. It seemed so removed from anything I was interested in and just internally dismissed anime as "Series with guys with crazy colored big hair screaming at each other and fighting all the time", like some 80s American superhero series made to promote toy sales.

This was my ignorant opinion on all anime apart from the few movies from the Ghibli canon I'd seen. Everything else was Pokemon and Dragonball to me.

It wasn't until I was 25 when I actually sought out a series to watch by happenstance (actually misunderstanding the description and thinking it was a movie) and was blown away. That was three years and a month ago.

3 years old with Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Monster Rancher etc..
later around 5-6 shinzo, mushrambo, medabots, yu gi oh, dragon ball etc..
Around 8 Shaman King, Duel Masters etc..
Around 10-11 I understand that those animes were "mangas" with Naruto, HxH and Evangelion.

First anime I watched was Laputa:Castle In The Sky when I was about 8.

Apparently they try not to refer to this show as Laputa anymore as "La Puta" means something along the lines of the whore in Portuguese I've heard, so now it's more generally known as Castle In The Sky.

When I become aware of what anime really was: 16.

In actuality: 5 or 6.
Some Saturday cartoons were Sailor Moon, Hello Kitty, and Pokemon, but I didn't know they were anime. It's kind of funny because growing up some of my favorite cartoons had anime like styles, like Totally Spies and Teen Titans.

When I knew anime was anime: 18.
Had a friend who was always into it, and I thought it was ok, you know, it was her thing. She likes Studio Ghibli and Shoujo anime, and I do find Ghibli movies enjoyable. When I found out about Attack on Titan (on the BBC news of all things lol), and decided to watch it. My mind was blown to smithereens. And then I fell down the rabbit hole of anime I guess.

Then when I was 14 I began watching anime with in earnest.
