I can't speak for where you live, but I travel basically everywhere that's too far to walk by train, but could count the total number of times I've seen people other than myself reading manga on a train on one hand. I don't believe I've even once seen someone reading a western comic (if you exclude the comic strips in newspapers), and the general perception in this country is very much that they are something for kids. On the other hand it's a rare journey indeed when there isn't at least one person reading a novel, be it in paper form or ebook. And your typical westerner would have no way of telling whether something is a regular novel or a light novel. Heck, your typical westerner doesn't even know that light novels exist - if they saw someone reading a light novel they would just see it as someone reading a novel. So, incidentally, would the overwhelming majority of people on MAL, unless they were familiar with the specific title and happened to get a glimpse of some artwork. Is it really a surprise if people don't comment on things that they aren't even aware of? |
