My friend asked me the other day for some horror anime because he said the ones he watched aren't scary. So I told him to watch corpse party and he said it wasn't scary after finishing it. I asked him if he watched it in the dark he sad no why, I told him to do that and watch shiki afterwards in the dark as well. He did that and found it 10 times scarier (same goes for me). my question is for anyone who doesn't find horror anime scary, do you watch with light on or watch it in the dark like pitch black and it's still not scary?

Well corpse party wasn't really scary, it was just gorey and poorly written.

But I tend to watch most things in the dark, so horror anime would be included.
@Lunafleurette have your lights been out during the horror animes on Rabbit? :P

Shiki wasn't scary. And I watched Shiki in the dark of my dorm room back then; I preferred to watch anime in the dark in general lol.

And honestly? It doesn't scare me.

The act of turning out the lights? No.
It's my natural habitat pretty much. :P

And I can't really say if it plays a role in stuff that does manage to scare me, because there's no lights-on version to compare it to.

@Zerity I think horror manga can potentially scare me more reading in the dark than watching anime can. xD I remember being very paranoid after reading Fuan no Tane like, way back in 2014? But my horror tolerance has built up since then...

Depends.
If I hid behind a corner and yelled "Pandas!" as you walked past what would you do? :P

I was about to ask how paper scared you more than voice acting and animation.

Then I remembered the theatre of the mind, and the imaginations unrivaled ability to terrify to be a thing.

@Sayanna

the difference with that is that its real so there's a REAL threat of danger
Having done both before when i lived in hicksville nowhere it's relaxing up until you hear an animal following you.
Both day and night can be scary cause well you're alone and unarmed in the woods.
its not the lack of light that's scary, its the threat of a homeless man jumping out at you, and people tend to be awake during the day, but you also cant see at night.

It goes without saying that anything that is advertised as 'horror' is meant to be consumed in a dark, immersive, environment!

@Moog wish I knew that sooner because the first couple ones I watched didn't scare me as much. Watching it in pitch black really adds that scary atmosphere that I wanted.

I mean... if you're not watching horror anime in the middle of the forrest at night you can only blame yourself if you're not scared.
That's like watching AnitoreEX without doing the workouts or watching comedy anime alone, it doesn't work because you're not trying to make it work.

Horror anime isn't scary enough to freak me out =/

all the time. that is how you watch horror.

@LoneWolf

really? have you seen any of Junji Ito's works?
"among monsters and humans, there are only two types.
Those who undergo suffering and spread it to others. And those who undergo suffering and avoid giving it to others." -Alice
“Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different beauty.” David Hume
“Evil is created when someone gives up on someone else. It appears when everyone gives up on someone as a lost cause and removes their path to salvation. Once they are cut off from everyone else, they become evil.” -Othinus

It's pretty good, but the manga is better

I haven't come across any series I found particularly scary/horrifying, So I guess I am fine with watch Horror Anime in the dark.

Though if I were to find a series particularly horrifying, I think watching it in the dark would make it even more enjoyable.

Sorry there are no scary horror anime. Higurashi is pretty suspenseful or at least in the first season. Ghost Hunt while I wouldn't say is overall scary there is one or two episodes that come close. Maybe stuff would be scarier if you were high on drugs that make you paranoid

I can't remember the last time I watched a horror anime. Well, it actually would have been the Another OVA last November. I watched it at night, probably with a lamp on though. I sometimes find it hard to watch anime, even horror anime, in pitch darkness, because without some sort of light source, I sometimes feel depressed. Unless I'm sleeping. Then fuck all light.

I don't watch horror anime in general, but the few I have watched were in the dark and the middle of the night. I will admit that it felt scarier when it was dark vs when it was light. Everyone here seems to be immune to horror but I'm not

Considering that pretty much any anime with gore scenes is considered "horror" these days, I'm pretty sure I have no problem with that.

Corpse party was an exception though since it creates a really dark, sinister and creepy atmosphere in addition to everything else.

It's one of the few anime that are close/belong to the horror genre in my opinion.
