The side characters are pretty amazing (especially Mustang, Scar, Rize, Armstrong's etc.) & I liked Alphonse too but I feel like Edward is a rather weak protagonist who doesn't shine much apart from the beginning & the very end.

I mean its good that this isn't Naruto where the MC does everything but I still feel that Edward often felt lackluster. He just tagged along but didn't have many strong character moments or even "badass" moments in general. He was just there..

One of the more unremarkable protagonists I have seen. Overall I didn't care for him.

What do you think?

I am very neutral and indifferent towards him so he didn't really make an impression on me. Sometimes he seemed likeable but he had mildly annoying moments too

Yeah that was the problem, he wasn't really memorable compared to the side characters

Great character but not the best in the series.

I also agree with he wasn't really memorable, because he somehow lacks great moment for generic main-character (It means he doesn't have great moments, but just somehow there's something that missing).

He is strong, but not overpowered. He sometimes can be mature, but sometimes can become childish too. A stubborn but can be understanding sometimes. His dedication to something like alchemist and how he want to bring al body back drag me out to find him more likeable. As for me, i can see ed as the best shounen protagonist i've ever seen.
Watch aria the animation and it's sequel.

Considering I don't normally like shounen MCs he's pretty good. I prefer the adult characters in FMA but Ed's cool too.

He's pretty fun, he's definitely one of the better standard shonen main characters, although I still wish he was written a little less trope-heavy.

One of the best Shounen main characters. I like the fact that he doesn't have any special powers that make him different from most Shounen MCs, and even by the end of the series he's not the strongest or even close to that.

He's not bad but I think we really need a spin-off where Roy is MC.

I slightly prefer the FMA version of him (partly because they handle the early part of the story where his character is defined for the audience better) but then I did see that one first and I think both are fantastic.

I think he was a great protagonist. He had flaws and was relatable, but still managed to overcome most of his challenges, whether it be through his own strength or with the help of others. His personality was great and he was constantly learning how the world works.

I had a huge crush on him. I think the reason why he didn't "shine" that much on the series and why he didn't have such badass moments (as some of you guys were saying) was due to the fact that Ed doesn't want to kill anyone. Some of the male characters (like Roy) really became like one of the cool guys on the show because they had those scenes where they completely blow off the enemy and always had the urge to kill, whereas Ed didn't. However, Ed was a tremendously great protagonist. You can clearly see his character development throughout the series. Although he was an immature and arrogant boy on the beginning, he still portrayed a soft-kinded heart type of character because he would still do anything to protect those who are dear to him. He appears to be stubborn and hard-headed, but he actually has a soft spot for those people he cares about, specially his brother and Winry. And as the series goes on, you can notice how he was trying to realize and face the consequences of his actions. Really such a great protagonist.

I would love to see this. I had honestly always hoped that the creator would do a spin off series regarding Roy and his unit rebuilding Ishval. It doesn't even have to be long, just an OVA on the relations and how Mustang's journey goes at the end of the series. I'm sure Scar would be included in there too(along with Miles) since they were both acting as relations to help build unification between the people of Amestris and Ishval. She put almost, ALMOST as much poignancy on Roy in the series, so it was kind of a shame we never got to find out what happened with him.

He's solid in the sense that I got a grasp of his character and empathized with his quest, but in terms of likability he pales in comparison to Mustang and even Alphonse. IMO, Alphonse was the most interesting of the leads, and by far the most admirable. His parents die and his body is taken from him, and he's forced to live as a disembodied spirit looking out at the world from within a suit of armor, and may very well never experience the joys of life. But he doesn't take his anger out on the world. No, he is the most courteous, respectful, and empathetic person in the entire show. Wow! One of my favorites.
