Football (sawker) thread of the 2017-18 season

What we learned from the 2016-17 season:

- Real Madrid have cemented their position as Europe's top dogs with a third Champions' League trophy in the past four years. Florentino Pérez has built arguably the strongest squad that football has ever seen.

- Italian football is still a mess, but Juventus offers hope. A club that continues to dominate Serie A while also remaining competitive in Europe despite losing their best players season after season. All Directors of Football and scouts should follow The Old Lady's template.

- In Germany, a newly promoted team managed to finish second in the league table. What in tarnation?

- A return to normality in the Premier League this season after Leicester's bizarre title triumph in the 2015-16 season, perhaps the only shock being Arsenal's failure to retain Champions League qualification. The best managers are all managing in the Premier League and the money involved is getting more and more ridiculous with each passing season, yet performances in Europe continue to disappoint. One of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world, but not the strongest.

With that said, it's now on to silly season.

I'd normally start with some predictions but honestly I have no idea what we've gotten ourselves in for. Only things I know for certain are that there's going to be a lot of dodgy pronunciation around Carra this year and we'll probably sign a few more players before Wednesday even get started.

@gallivant

Just read that the Mighty Swans, as well as several other Premier League clubs, are interested in Jacob Murphy. Looks as if he enjoyed a good debut season in the Championship. How would you rate him? Anywhere near Redmond's level when he left?

he's more explosive than Redmond and has a better eye for goal. less good at finding space between the lines so unlike redmond he can't really play 10.

Iwan Roberts (probably) says no though in regards to Swansea.

Oh shit, new thread :P At least Brereton's signed up long term, it'd be nice to get a couple more deals tied up. Luongo linked atm. He was decent for QPR a couple years back, love him on FM too ngl.
Boro and Wolves fans on twitter for whatever reason believe Assombalonga has an 8m buy out clause in his contract (we bought him for £5.5m with add ons to £8m). Hate it when other teams fan bases buzz off one of your players. Disgusting... Don't think they've ever even see him play a game. Lazy af 99% of the time. Love him, though.

I say Manchester United win the EPL, Juve and Bayern win Serie A and Bundesliga again, Real Madrid take La Liga, PSG or Monaco for Ligue 1, and Porto win the Portuguese League

I think Real Madrid will get a "hat-trick" of UCL titles or Manchester United win their 4th UCL.

We finally signed him. Finally, after 3 years, we finally signed him. Him, Firmino and Mane up front with Coutinho supplying them from behind. Now all we really need is a proper center back, a left back and some cover for our midfield.

I'm a bit surprised about how little effort there seems to be for big clubs to sign Aubameyang. I feel like he should be a priority for many clubs. His price tag seems pretty low considering how incredibly good he is.

Looking at Dortmund's transfer so far, it it seems they continue to sign young players except for Toprak, with a new manager hoping for a title this season it's been 5 years.

Don't rate Aubameyang that highly tbh. Most teams that are able to afford him already have a better striker too. Definitely not worth £63m.

For Madrid, 3 consecutive CL titles seems not very possible though I'd love it. I'm more interested in them retaining La liga. Mourinho does usually give a better second season compared to his first season with a team like in Inter and Real Madrid, but not sure he'll get EPL this time. I wonder if Liverpool can make it this time.

My guess for CL, Juventus as going to do another Bayern. Lost 2010, 2012, but won 2013. (For Juve it's 2015,2017, and just maybe they'll be capable in 2018) what do you think @zodd0 ?

Transfer business been quiet on my end. Only significant news is that we are close to signing Tammy Abraham on loan. Any Championship fans seen much of him last season? @gallivant @Kilnerbanker @earnshaw30 @Fang

We've not had many proper silly season rumours this year. Webber is actually giving local press real information and I suppose agents know we're poor now so they're not using us to help drum up interest.

Abraham didn't play well at CR but obviously had a good season. Thanks to offering more in terms of physicality I'd imagine he's less likely to straight up flop like the last Chelsea forward to tear up the Championship.

2 more Germans confirmed today, and this is looking pretty complete. Surprised we've kept Fat Frankie (Niel's number 2) on when Alan Irvine was released. He'll be a transition coach apparantley, focussing on getting development squad players into the first team. Fluthmann is heading up the video analysis department as well as coaching.

Interesting times.

Yeah, perhaps. Depends on signings though. If they could get a winger Douglas Costa, that would be great and maybe an offensive midfielder like James Rodriguez. A good right-back is needed as well with Alves gone. The squad needs some improvement.

Higuan went to Juve for way more than that, from a rival club however. I think Auba would be of more use to Juve, especially in the CL. I wish they would have signed him instead of Higgy.

Never mind, just signed some bloke from Porto called Laurent Depoirte. Didn't play a great deal at Porto but has a decent goal scoring record. Club record fee, but it didn't really take much to break that tbf

Edit: unless someone has gone on to wiki and changed his goal scoring stats his record isn't as good as I first thought. Oh well

Don't really think so, I feel both United and city will take one more season to adapt and be title contenders, especially United need good finishers even if they get Morata(he isn't the guy who will score goals everytime). I expect Tottenham to do well this year but we will see.

Liverpool won't make it too I think, their problem is that they have hardly made/targeted any good transfer apart from Salah maybe. I will say Tottenham has a real good chance this season followed by either Chelsea/city.

Presumably. Still pisses me off that the media glosses over the fact that Bournemouth have had a Russian billionaire in the background to help them along, I suppose that would spoil the underdog narrative. Can't compare Bournemouth to clubs like Burnley, Norwich, Swansea and most recently Huddersfield who did it the right way.

Arsenal is like United. They're linked to everyone but unlike United, they usually end up signing someone no one really knows or cares about. Same is gonna happen this season. You really think your board is gonna pay what 50+mil for Lacazette?

I guess they're still waiting on the Alexis and Ozil situation, they said they'll discuss it after the Confederations Cup.

If they decide to go the board must have some kindof back up plan, so maybe in a sticky situation they might, unless they plan to finish even lower next season without proper striker.

Tbh I just hope Alexis and Ozil sign da thing.
