Religion is a parasite, and the only way to exterminate it is to accept facts that can be proven by regular every day activities.

Absolutely never buy Zestiria. The game is worse than Legendia.

Berseria seems fine so far though.

  • Lucy -The Eternity She Wished For- - Best. Visual novel. EVER. This is one of the most charming and beautiful things I've ever had the pleasure to experience. It's heartwarming, it's funny, and it made me cry in all of the right ways. Just don't stop reading until you get the true ending (It's not terribly hard to unlock.)

  • +1 Danganronpa games (except for Ultra Despair Girls. Idk if the PC version of UDG will be any good, but the Vita version is awful. The first two games are great, though. Also, for the love of all that is good in this world, DON'T watch the anime before playing the games.)

  • +1 Tales of Berseria - An absolute blast on PS4. Presumably great on PC, too.

  • ACE Academy - Episodic, anime-style VN made by a Canadian game company. Includes some novel twists on the standard choice systems, has voice acting for all major characters, and has a great sense of humor, fun romance options, and even some action elements.

  • LiEat - Short, sweet, and easy on the wallet

  • The Fruit of Grisaia - Contains an absurdly large amount of content, even for $40. It took me over 35 hours just to get through one of the routes. The MC also has a hilariously sharp tongue, which could be a nice break from generic MCs you might see elsewhere. The Steam version has all 18+ CGs cut out, but the story remains intact (you know what has taken place even if you don't see it.) If you want the 18+ CGs restored, though, there is a restoration patch somewhere out there, and there's a community guide on Steam detailing how to install it.

  • Long Live The Queen - Not really a "must-have," as it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you're at all interested in playing the Dark Souls of VNs, this is it.

I'll update with more if I think of them.

Important Note: I no longer - in any way, shape, or form - consider myself a moral nihilist (even in my old, convoluted definition of the term). I very much do believe there is such a thing as objective good and evil. In addition, I apologize for any of the posts I've made that are rude, aggressive, or otherwise unbecoming.

I've always striven to walk a path befitting a follower of Christ, and now recognize some of my old comments here as misguided if not outright wrong. If you happen upon them, pray do not let them darken your view of the God I serve. He is kind, even if I, at times, have not been.

Perhaps if it's your first tales game, then it can provide the core experience that Tales brings.

Tbh, Nekopara is probably the one I'd most heavily recommend

Rabi-Ribi. Metroidvania with bullet hell elements, cute girls and yuri. It's really great. And also hard.

Oh, and 100% Orange Juice. Must buy. It's like $2 on sale. Top fun especially when played with friends. If something goes wrong, blame the dice.

99,99% of what you can find on steam as far as the variety of 'anime' related tags goes is terrible stuff fans have zero clue about, go for actually good vns around the net (akai ito, aoi shiro, cross channel, even phenomeno for free). Black Closet is great to play, va11halla is alright and Life is Strange is evangelion inspired among other things, just like hyper light drifter is a bunch of anime influences mixed in (beware it's little more than a zen garden for arena combat).
Yomawari: night alone is alright too.
F.E.A.R. is every japanese horror flick/anime you ever watched but I'm bordering out of anime char designs besides LiS, best thing it provides is level design tbh while the rest is nonsense.

It's actually one of the best recs in the thread, black closet is the best of the Hanako Games bunch but long live the queen is worth a look even though I'll never complete it.

I got my money back too but what I played of it was absolute gold, I was just interested in different stuff.

I ignored atelier games but I might try them out in the future:/
Oh right and OneShot is on steam, adorable stuff.

Zestiria is ok, Just make sure you get it heavily discounted. I wouldn't pay more than $10 for it.
